"And it's right down the pipe."

Along with "Back to Faulke," that's maybe my favorite sports call of all time.

As for the time left on the clock, there should have been time for one more play. Back then, the clock was supposed to stop upon the signal of a successful try, so five, six or seven second run-offs were not uncommon. (Remember, a FG try is a live ball, so the clock operator must wait for the signal.) After that game, largely in part because of it, they changed the rule so that a FG try which is not returned or blocked can only result in a 4 second run off or the actual time for the play, whichever is less.

As kids during the years before ESPN, my brother & I would watch the highlight show every Sunday
before the 1:00 game. It was hosted by Summerall & Tom Brookshier and was the only way to see
action from the other games from the previous week.
The two of them got along so well, that it made the viewing experience even more enjoyable.

You under-40 whipper-snappers can't realize the impact that program made on our football-watching
lives, especially because Pats games were usually blacked-out. Manna from heaven.

Yea, I remember that show - a very good one. It was called "This Week in the NFL" wasn't it?? Brookshier was very good - good analysis, insight, and enthusiasm. Pat Summerall was so smooth, so good. Probably my 2nd favorite football voice next to Gil. My only beef with him was that understated response to the end of the Pats - Rams SB, but that was probably just more his natural style. RIP Pat - you were a great one on many fronts.

Great voice and delivery. Was either drunk, in a partial Coma, or both during SB XXXVI and his call of the winning FG was inappropriately subdued, given the circumstances.

Some people in this thread apparently enjoyed that call. To me, it is probably the second worst call in Boston sports history (the worst being a tie among every single fly ball out called by Joe Castiglione).

Just listen to Gil Santos' call instead.
