Pat Summerall has died

Pat Summerall died Tuesday. He was 82.

That’s exactly how Summerall once told a writer he would craft the first sentences of his own obituary _ short and to the point.

He died in his hospital room at Zale Lipshy Hospital where he was recovering from surgery for a broken hip, a family friend confirmed.

Pat Summerall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has a cool anecdote from his playing career.

The Giants got barely into Cleveland territory, and then sent out Summerall to try for a tiebreaking 49-yard field goal. To add to the drama, there were swirling winds and snow. Summerall, a straight-ahead kicker, made the field goal with just two minutes to play, keeping the Giants alive for another week (they defeated Cleveland a week later, 10-0, in the Eastern Conference tiebreaker playoff before losing the sudden-death playoff to Baltimore the week after that). Giants' offensive coach Vince Lombardi was against sending Summerall in[6] (Summerall had missed 31 yard attempt a few minutes earlier), and then gleefully greeted Summerall as he came off the field 'You son of a *****, you can't kick it that far![7][8] Sports Illustrated ran the story as one of its primary articles the next week, with a leading photograph showing the football heading between the uprights through the snow.[9]

Too bad he didn't call the Snow Bowl. Although any announcing team with Phil Simms is above-average for me ...

Yes, that will also stick. I remember getting mad at Madden because of what he said at the beginning of the drive. He was against trying to win the game before overtime and felt the Pats should just kneel to get to overtime.

It seems hard to find quality announcers like him today.

Right now on NBC Nightly News, they said he was in the broadcast booth for 16 Super Bowls. If you count SB36 as his last, that's 16 announced and 20 not. I'd like to know who the next person in line is with second most. I bet it's somewhere around about 7 or something.

Like many here, my most vivid memory is of his succinct comment when #4's kick split the uprights to win SB XXXVI.

I'm sure this had been discussed before, but if you watch the replay of that, there's 7 seconds on the clock at the snap and 2 seconds left when the ball breaks the uprights' plane. I'm not sure of the official rules, but that clock sure had no problem draining all the way down to double zeros. There might be a rule book stipulation on time runoff after a kicked ball goes through the uprights, but if I were The Rams, I'd be pissed there was no final play in the form of a kickoff.

Little-known fact: Pat Summerall ruined his liver through alcoholism and somehow finagled a transplant. He was a great broadcaster in his day but should've retired about 15 years earlier than he did.

Yeah I too remember watching Robastelli,Huff,Gifford,Rote,Triplett, Webster and Conerly.

Dad couldn't afford a tv so we went over to Uncle Joe's house to watch.

As good as we thought football was back then, it seems alot more exciting now !

As kids during the years before ESPN, my brother & I would watch the highlight show every Sunday
before the 1:00 game. It was hosted by Summerall & Tom Brookshier and was the only way to see
action from the other games from the previous week.
The two of them got along so well, that it made the viewing experience even more enjoyable.

You under-40 whipper-snappers can't realize the impact that program made on our football-watching
lives, especially because Pats games were usually blacked-out. Manna from heaven.

Funny story. When the Pats opened Gillette and the NFL season the following season, Madden was walking around the main concourse area; I figure he was touring the new stadium. As he was walking around, dozens of Pats fans were following him chanting, "Take a knee! Take a knee!"
