Obviously, this is a "when healthy" thing, but it was inspired by this comment on the Demps thread:

Good point. People forget that Edelman is a historically good punt returner because his presence on the field is always so spotty. If he can stay healthy, there's certainly no need for competition at that position.

Over the last four seasons, only one player has (A) had 20+ punt returns, and (B) a better PR average (Edelman has averaged 13.13 YPR); that player is Leodis McKelvin (>16 YPR!).

Impressively, that is also the second highest average since the AFL-NFL merger.

[FWIW, going back before the Super Bowl era, he only ranks 31st; the vast majority of the players ahead of him played in the 1940s.]

Why I for one am glad Edelperson is back.
Hope he lasts into the playoffs.

For what he brings to this team, the flexibility at scout option QB/DB/WR/ST and the the PR I couldn't imagine the Patriots ever not being open to bring him back.

Glad he's with us, and I think he's primed for a big year with a receiving core that has no clear hierarchy.

a vet minimum player who plays lots of roles for us, a perfect patriot

Megadittos to the last 2 posts

Id really love to see him have a breakout year receiving and signing him to a team friendly 4 year deal

When healthy, he's one of the league's best PR and very underrated weapon. He made some huge impact plays in multiple playoff games that go unnoticed because the team didn't take advantage:

2009 Ravens wild card round - big PR setting us up near midfield or in Ravens territory (can't remember) when offense was having trouble getting going. He also contributed alot at WR that day, caught 1 or 2 TD's.

2010 Jets divisional round - Down 21-11 late he had another huge return setting us up in Jets territory when the game looked over. Should've cut the lead to 3 but again the offense sucked that day.

In the close playoff games that are sure to come you can't underestimate his importance and game changing ability.

I heard this the other day. There is only one player who has had a punt return for a TD in each of the last 3 years. - Julian Edelman

Edelman is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. Like Amendola, his issues have nothing to do with skill. They have to do with health. It'a as simple as that.

And in case people are wondering, four years in a row with a PR TD has been done once, Eric Metcalf 1992-1995.

Edelman seems to be:

  • An elite punt returner
  • A generally solid STer
  • A solid backup slot receiver
  • A dubious general backup receiver -- but he took snaps from Wes Welker !?!
  • An emergency-only DB, RB, QB ...
  • Hard-hitting
  • Fragile

fixed for you

I'd rather minimize the risk of him getting injured and just keep him at WR. We should all be perfectly fine with Leon Washington returning kicks

I think most Patriot fans would disagree, and leave it at that.

Washington will return kicks. Edelman is the more dangerous PR.
