Gronk On the Verge of another setback?

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Best way to get a nasty, hard-to-treat infection these days is be in a hospital. Antibiotic resistance has gotten nasty. My father's final days were afflicted by MRSA (definitely resistant), my mother's by sepsis (less clear). My wife had MRSA for a while (not hospital-based) as well.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Didn't Mickey Mantle have a problems with an infection that cut his career short??? Osteomylitis??

With modern medicine, shouldn't this have gotten figured out by now??

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Why do I have such a bad feeling about this?...

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Then - Go to the hospital to get healthy.

Now - Go to the hospital to get sicker.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

People laughed at the support and healing qualities of wrapping the injured forearm in a huge kielbasa when I suggested it.

Because you are recalling, consciously or not, all the news in the last twenty years about infections that we can't beat with our current antibiotics. And that news has gotten more intense as time goes on.

Most biotech companies of any scale have teams looking for entirely new ways to attack bacteria. NIH is into it big time as well (although the sequester is taking a toll up there, but don't get me started on that).

Gronk may be able to beat this, or he may never play football again. The odds are in his favor, but this is no sure thing.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Get well soon big man.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Many of my closest friends are doctors and to a one they tell me the same thing: GET OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!

We are pumping out filthy food supply full of antibiotics to keep the animals alive (barely) and fat in horrid conditions until they can be slaughtered. Because of this, we're building a whole new gang of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Doctors are terrified of this.

What is going on with Gronk is unconscionable and should be a wake-up call to everyone. If a bull of a man, in prime physical health, can get hammered like this, what of the sick and elderly?

I'm very pessimistic about this situation for Gronk. He should not still be having problems.

Yup, it's definitely time to build the bunker and hoard those canned goods, ammo and krugerrands...

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

The title of the thread and, more specifically, the article, is misleading since his infection was reported in February and no new setback is reported now. Specifically, no evidence is presented that the infection did not respond to treatment. He is being treated and the outcome will not be known until the surgery to remove the plate.

If the infection has cleared, a new plate would be installed and Gronkowski would have sufficient time to be prepared to undertake normal football activities by the time the season begins.

Thanks for the snark...don't think I went anywhere near there, but if it makes you feel better to exaggerate for effect, go for it.

And I just reread the article carefully - it is a misleading headline...Mack Herron's got it right. There's no reason to believe the infection is still there at this point.

Thanks for catching this. That's a huge difference. If the second round of treatment wasn't working, it would be much worse.

I should have known better than to just trust the thread and the Herald.

In case of a slow news day, look to the archives? If Gronk for some reason is not ready to go on opening day, that does give Ballard some playing time (see what he can do).

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

It's dated today.... Ah never mind, Borges sucks.

He then had a third surgery in February specifically to treat the infection and has been on antibiotics ever since.

Good job highlighting the facts vs hysteria.
Did not the great Tom Brady have post op infection problems as well?
This is not the forum for detailed discussion but the science of medicine recognizes that we have a major problem looming over profligate misuse of antibiotics.

You're welcome, Doc.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Worst case he is not ready for the start of the season? I'll take that all day. Less opportunity for the big guy to further injure himself.

Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

So which tight ends will BB target for our #1 and #2 Draft choices :D
