Another coach the meddling Sullivans ran out of town along with Raymond Berry. What a pitiful mess they made of the franchise. I never liked Michael Jackson but I guess we should be grateful in some way for his role in the demise of the Sullivan ownership, which indirectly lead to Bob Kraft becoming the owner of the NEP's.

Fairbanks was an innovator of the 3/4 two gap defense....I was fortunate to live through that era in Pats football...and unfortunate....the day Fairbanks left I can still clearly remember...off to Colorado and the Buffs...he was recruiting during the Pats 1976 season and when the Sullivans found out the acrimonious divorce began....ugly. The Pats SHOULD have made their first Super Bowl under Fairbanks...I feel no guilt posting that I wish it was Ben Dreith instead of Chuck....RIP Coach....

I just became a Pats fan in '76 as Chuck was leaving the team for Colorado but he was an icon in Patriots history.

Both a' u guyz possibly erred on the year. It was during the 1978 season Fairbanks pulled the stuff with Colorado, before the home playoff loss to The Oilers. Pats wouldn't lose another home playoff game until Ravens in '09.

yeah...I am still so jerked off about '76 that I always think that it was THAT year that he left...the playoff loss to Houston in '78...that was his swan song...hey look, Pewster, give me a friggin' break...I went to the Cumby's to get gas today, pulled up to pump #5 and by the time I walked inside to the counter I forgot the pump #...the young girl with the rings in her nose said "don't worry Unca Joe, I got the number for you"....I don't know how it is for everyone else but I'm still 20 something in a part of my mind...the rest of the cabbage is slowly getting cooked.

I think the statement that Robert Kraft released said it the best. As a Pats fan from their inception, I just knew that getting a great college coach like Fairbanks would turn the franchise from a laughing stock into a serious contender. Chuck did not let us down. And could he draft - two Hall of Famers, Hannah and Haynes, not to mention guys like Cunningham, Stingley, Nelson, Hamilton, etc. RIP, Chuck.

In 1975 I had the pleasure of caddying for Chuck Fairbanks at the Dedham Country and Polo Club in Dedham, MA. In the same group was Hank Bullock the Pats defensive coordinator. I always remember them both being very down to earth and approachable. Chuck was also a very good golfer, with a low single digit handicap. Hank was at the other end of the spectrum. He tried hard.

Fairbanks and the pats pinnicle was 76 when they had their best chance to win a super bowl... 77 grey and Hannah held out and cost the past 2 of the first three games and a playoff spot... losing to the jets and Cleveland cost them at the end of the season when if they beat the colts they win the division and who knows.. 78 another solid team , stingley was lost , but the pats traded for Harold Jackson which was a nice addition but Fairbanks had enough of the sullivans and it was too late....

Yeah, very underrated. Put Chuck Fairbanks with an owner like Robert Kraft and the Patriots would have won championships before Brady and BB.
