The Patroits all WR draft game

Let just for ha-ha's do a draft in which the Patriots draft nothing but WR's with all 5 Pick this year. Fans seem to be very concerned about WR's one was even "terrified".

Again the Patriots have pick 3 #29,#59, 91, 226, 235. Try to be realistic, in other words don't draft a WR that is rated as a consensus to 20 pick.

For my draft I targeted only those who were mentioned as football smart, good to decent route runners, team players, tough and not afraid to block. I think that in the Patriots system is required to succeed and pure measurables without those traits mean nothing as we have seen time and time again.

BTW my information comes from Pro Football Weekly Draft Preview book.

#29 Keenan Allen -Cal or Justin Hunter Tenn- I'll go with Allen if both were on the board - certainly would take Hunter if he fell down to #59

#59-Aaron Dobson- Marshall - Deandre Hopkins if he is still around as a option.
#91 Marquise Goodwin -Texas- Tavon Austin without the down side of a 1st round risk. T.J Moe another option at that pick

#226 Ryan Spadola- Lehigh- Can be used as a slot or outside the numbers.

#235 Alec Lemon- Cuse- strictly and inside the numbers possession 3rd down receiver.

I do have other on my list that I'd take if the others are gone.

OK-rip it apart and do yours so others can rip yours apart.

29. Justin Hunter (Z)
Athletic playmaker, can stretch the field with his elite length and athletecism but he also works the intermediate routes better than just about any other WR in this draft.

59. Da'Rick Rogers (X)
Big, physical and can work all over the field. He is solid in all 3 three phases of the passing game (short, intermediate and deep), is good with the ball in his hands and adds a physicality and attitude to an offense.

91. Stedman Bailey (Y)
Quality slot WR that can be reliable in the passing game and also come up with big plays. Really solid all around football player.

226. Marquess Wilson (backup Z/X)
Smooth and fluid athlete on the outside. Doesn't do anything great, but does everything really well. Would go much higher if not for character concerns.

235. TJ Moe (backup Y)
Big time sleeper as a slot WR. Incredible change of direction athleticism, hard worker and extremely tough. I think he could be the next Wes Welker.

My only concern with this group is character, especially with Rogers and Wilson. But the talent there is great and I think they would compliment each other nicely.

29. Keenan Allen a physical WR that has been compared to anquan boldin and has put up his impressive numbers with a pretty bad QB

59. Markus Wheaton a fast outside receiver that is an absolute favorite hear on the board, has great character can't go wrong here (I would pick Quinton Patotn but I think he wont be there at 59)

91. Da'rick Rogers untapped potential who had an amazing season at Tennesee when he was there

226. T.J Moe this guy was impressive at the combine and could be a solid slot guy witha little development a la Edelmen

235. Brandon Kaufman said to be a man among boys at Eastern Kentucky sign me up for him

#29 DeAndre Hopkins

Wonderful route runner, very smart footballer in that he knows how to get open and a relly good catch radius. His LSU tape in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl was one of the best I've seen from a WR; he and Tajh Boyd brought Clemson back almost single-handedly. "Clutch" is a controversial descriptor, but Hopkins absolutely was "clutch" in that game.

Surprise!!! OK, maybe not.

#91 Ace Sanders

This is too early to pick him and he's too small but I wanted to use this pick to acknowledge just how impressed I was with his abilities as a receiver. It's quite possible that Sanders has the ability to get open quicker than Wes Welker can. And in our offense, that's a huge asset.


#226 Marquess Wilson

Has questions to answer character wise and some of his drops are mind-bogglingly bad, but there are no receivers in this draft as aesthetically pleasing to watch as Wilson. Think of something really smooth. Wilson is smoother.


#235 Courtney Gardner


A poor-mans cross between Cordarelle Patterson, Da'Rick Rogers and Chance Warmack. This kid can drive block. He's also 6'3" and runs a 4.38.

Round 7 is all about upside. very low floors though.

#29, Deandre Hopkins. Big, great hands, great route runner, productive, physical with the football. He gives us a big RZ target alternative to Gronk. My top choice at WR if we take one in the 1st.

#59, Markus Wheaton. A fast, deep receiver prospect who we would be asking to stretch the defense. Showed off top class abilities at the senior bowl. BTW he has beaten out the likes of TJ Houshmanzadeh and Chad Johnson to become the all time leading receiver at Oregon Stat.

#91, Da'Rick Rogers has great size/speed if he falls a little bit to our 3rd, otherwise I'd take a look at Texas speedster Ryan Swopes who blew it up at the combine with a 4.34 40.

7th round and later territory are all longshot sleepers. But let's see who's out there.

#226, Marquess Wilson. 6'3 194 lbs. Ran a 4.51 40 at the combine. A tall, deep receiver from EWU. His dispute with the coaching staff put him in a murky situation. (Filed formal complain against coaches, it was investigated and dismissed. But that very situation is what makes a speed/size combo talent like Wilson available this late. If he acts up, you cut him, but for a 7th rounder the risk is low and the reward could be high.

#235, Brandon Kaufman. 6'5 and ran a 4'6 40. If you're taking a chance late, why not gamble on size. And he wants to prove that he's worthy of a selection. The chip on the shoulder attitude could propel him to the next level.

Certainly Rogers has the physical tools to be considered. However from what I'm reading, emotionally and mentally is not a good fit for the Patriots Offense and to win the trust of TFB.

Agreed. Round 2 is too early for Rogers. But if he slips into round 3? Risking the headcase might be worth it when you consider that head is attached to a Julio Jones-esque body. Maybe he would calm down in the Pats locker room. We took a similar chance on Mallet.

That's great and all but that's an in game injury on the last game of the year so game plan changes will/can only be minor. Compare that to if Watkins were out for an extended time and teams were preparing for Hopkins instead.

Well OK. Sammy Watkins missed three games this season: Auburn, Ball State and Boston College. Hopkins had the following lines in those games:

Auburn - 13 catches for 119 yards
Ball state - 6-105
Boston College - 11-197

Those are good numbers. I hope I'm wrong. The deeper this draft gets at WR, the better. I just can't think of many instances of multi-superstar WR teams where both ended up being good in the pros.

Every pick comes into the NFL with some flaw(s) that will hard work and good caoching can be corrected.

The flaw inside the head is the toughest to correct.

Watkins is an exciting and explosive athlete - Hopkins is much better at WR skills.
