I've been of the opinion for a while that the Pats are trading down and out of the first with the flat level of talent. Of the players with the potential to fall to 29 who would be compelling enough to stay there and make a pick? Guys like Jordan, Ansah, Cooper.......who at one point looked possible obviously aren't going to happen.

For me there are two.

Datone Jones
Jonathan Hankins

I think Jones and Hankins are gone but there is some chance they slide.

I could make an additional case for Hopkins or Allen but there's a bunch of receivers in the second like Patton, Wheaton and Williams and I don't think I'd gamble a first on having chemistry with Brady. Trade down into the second and pick up a 3rd and have Hopkins and Slay or McFadden or just have Allen or Hopkins. BB would have to be totally sold on one of them and short of sending them to Costa Rica to train with Brady for a week I don't see how he could be.

C.Carradine
K.Allen

We don't often have a shot at Top 20 talent, and even if we have to red shirt Carradine I think he's going to be a very effective pass rusher in the future (Carradine/Jones will go a long way in solving our pass rush issues.)

K. Allen because we really need a physical WR. While they might be gambles and not likely to see a NE uniform, the risk/reward payoff makes it worth it, imo.

The rationale of picking up extra picks is solid, except for the fact that the Pats suck pretty bad at 2nd/3rd round picks and nearly always hit on their 1st round picks.

Would I pass up on a solid 1st round prospect to potentially draft 2 flops instead? Well the only way I trade out of the 1st this year is to gain a future 1st in 2014. Would love to have another draft year with two 1sts to play with.

The Mark Ingram trade is the perfect example. The Pats gave up pick #28 (Ingram) to the Saints, and got a 2nd in 2011 and a 1st in 2012. The 2nd rounder turned into Shane Vereen (56), and the 1st rounder turned into Chandler Jones (27). Now THAT is the type of trade I'd make again any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

Hankins
Datone Jones- has grown on me since the senior bowl
Keenan Allen- Big and quick. Seems to fit like a glove.
Tyler Eifert- Blocking needs work but as a receiver=gronkesque

Hankins,Hopkins,Cooper.and Rhodes.

My money tells me they will look for a tradeback and I won't be disappointed one bit as long as the package is good. Lot of solid talent in this draft.

Jon Cooper
Cornelius Carradine
DeAndre Hopkins
Robert Woods
Alec Ogletree
Margus Hunt

Pretty comfortable taking any of these in the first round

Definitely:
OG Jonathan Cooper
OG Chance Warmack
DT Star Lotulelei (pending medicals)
DT Sheldon Richardson
DE Ezekiel Ansah
DE Cornellius Carradine
LB Dion Jordan
LB Barkevious Mingo
CB DeMarcus Milliner
CB Xavier Rhodes

Possibly:
WR Cordarrelle Patterson
DT Kawann Short
DT Sylvester Williams
DE Margus Hunt
LB Jaime Collins
CB Desmond Trufant

I really don't care enough about any of the wide receivers or safeties to hang around to take one. Pretty flat classes at the top in terms of talent. Much bigger dropoff at DL, hence a lot of them on my lists.

Tank carradine
Hankins
Rhodes
allen

other wise try and make a trade like the one with the saints

Why does no one covet Kawan Short from Purdue? At 6-3 305 he has the size and his record of generating interior pressure, and proven sack ability, is just what the doctor ordered.

Tyler Eifert- Blocking needs work but as a receiver=gronkesque

The likely response:

file.php

DeAndre Hopkins
Keenan Allen
Xavier Rhodes
Desmond Trufant
Tank Carradine

Almost there:
Justin Hunter
Johnthan Banks
Jesse Williams
Jamar Taylor
Quinton Patton

Well it cost them additional 3rd rounder to get Jones which I'm fine with but every trade into the next year doesn't work out that way. If they wanted to take a first and a third and trade up to get Jones, Hankins or another defensive player I'm on board with that for sure just not sure they do it two years in a row with limited draft choices.

I just don't feel the difference between a player at 29 and 49 is really different in this draft. So if they traded down to 45 but turned around and used that pick plus the one at 59 to trade up to the 45 area again I'd look at that and say ok Hopkins at 29 and Slay at 59 or Patten at 45 and Hunt at 46. Which is the better combination?

Cooper isn't falling that far. As I said on Hopkins I think the Pats would have to have a side session with Brady to take a receiver in the first and I don't see a huge difference between Hopkins, Patton and Wheaton. I do like Allen as a Bolden type. I just don't see what others are in Woods. Ogletree's talent warrants it but the off the field stuff is going to push him down.

Hunt and Carradine are interesting. Both athletically are firsts but you're drafting them on upside. I think Bill would roll the dice similar to Gronk in the 40's after a trade down.

Probably only Star Lotulelei if he fell due to medical concerns. I don't think there is any player that has a reasonable chance of falling that I would consider more valuable than the combination of players we could obtain from trading down. Give me picks in the mid 40's and late 70's over any player that will be available at 29.

Nobody from your top list minus Carradine is making it to 29 unless Lotulelei medical is bad. Of the bottom list Patterson probably isn't making it to 29 but also Rang said there's a general concern about him learning complexed offense which if true takes him off the Pats board completely. The others are second round talents to me.

Cooper is an OG and so whilst he likely won't drop that far, he still might. As for Hunt and Carradine being drafted on upside, that's what you draft in the first round (see Solder, Nate and Jones, Chandler).

Solder and Jones had more production to back up those first round choices. The 49ers could draft both of them right behind so if you really do like them there is merit to taking them at 29 I just think their sweet spot is in the 40's.

Never said they were likely. Just saying those are the players who would make me forego the advantage of trading down and getting more picks, while still having one in the top 45 sweet spot of the draft.
