Pick One: a 27 year old Wes Welker, or a 27 year old Troy Brown

Sure, it's all so clear.

Brown

14 seasons, 557 rec, 6366 yds, 31tds,

Welker ( Pats only)

6 seasons, 768 rec, 8580 yds, 38 tds.

Another stat whore. How many superbowls did Brown let slip through his hands, how many big playoff games did he? Brown was clutch and would always make the big catch Margarine was a stat padder. All you stat fanatics should go follow the Broncos. Then watch the 2 biggest playoff choke jobs fail in the postseason.

I'm pretty sure it's time for your nap.

I only remember one time when a play involving Brown may have cost us a SB title. 2006 season, AFCCG at Indy, and I think Brady and Brown had miscommunication on a 3rd down pass. If they get the first down most likely they run the clock out and advance to face a very beatable Bears team. But Brown ran the wrong route and Brady could be seem arguing with him on the way back to the sideline. That play always stood out to me, but I couldn't be mad at Brown after he saved our bacon on the strip fumble at San Diego the week prior.

I love Troy Brown. But like Wes, he's human. Fumbled not once but twice in the 2001 playoff snow game. Had either not been recovered, folks like you would hold him in Buckner regard.

How is this even a debate. I would not only take Brown over cant believe its not butter but it would take Givens over him as well. Brown did everything Wes did but better. Brown always got the first down always knew where the marker was. Wes was a product of Brady nothing more. Oh and Troy Brown was CLUTCH unlike butters cousin Margarine Welker. Brown always was reliable Wes doesnt have any rings cause they simply fell through his hands twice. You people in this thread clearly are stat whores give me a young clutch Troy Brown anyday.:rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker: Its not even close. Its like Peyton Manning or Brady you want the guy who is clutch?? i would hope you wouldnt want the stat padder. Step your fan game up

This is so true! I would also like to add that TB was a much better receiver outside the numbers. Far better.....

Brady throws a hard accurate low ball, that Welker and him made a living off of. Manning throws a ball that floats and drops, very accurate catchable ball. At this point he doesn't have the zip to dominate the short passing game and no one respects the deep part of his game any longer. Welker is going to take some shots, big shots. He would be better off throwing it to Troy, but who wouldn't?

Not meant to offend but maybe too many Fantasy Football stat types answering this question. Its an easy one: Troy Brown. A total winner and comes up huge when needed. His strip in the San Diego Divisional game years back was just tenacious play; so many other things. Welker is an amazing player and has done amazing things for us, but he never took over or saved a game when Pats needed it.

Hmm lets see a snow blizzard game i expect fumbles. I dont expect our go to guy buttaboy to drop the a wide open catch in the superbowl or playoffs last season. Only thing wes did that i will miss was made sure he had first downs. As far him catching the ball at crunch time i expect wilfork would make that catch more times than Margarine.

Instead of lamenting on Troy Brown vs Wes Welker, lets hope that in 5 years we have a thread like this lamenting on Troy Brown vs Wes Welker vs Danny Amendola. Time only moves forward.

I have $200 that says Amendola scores more td's this year than Welker in 2012 and has 10+ more receptions for more than 15 yards. He is a better fit IMO.

Whichever one can rush the passer

I'd say Troy Brown's numbers would have been a lot nicer with Brady version 2007-2012 throwing to him at age 27...

I dont really have any recollection of that, but I do have a vivid memory of Rache Caldwell dropping a key 3rd down that hit him right in the numbers on his jersey while he was standing still with no one around covering him and he dropped it... and I still remember his big bug eyes staring in disbelief after the play as well

I understand why your mood is listed as confused. Let me help you out here - Welker. And it's not that close. :)

The people who trash Welker are simply demonstrating their total ignorance when it comes to anything related to football.

It depends on what the game is.
Nobody can equal WW for regular season production but as the record shows both Brown and Branch are the ones you want on the field in the games that count.

Yes, Welker dropped a tough ball in SB46 and had the bad 3rd down drops in this past AFCCG, but if the D holds against the Giants in Arizona, Welker was the most likely player to end up with the SB42 MVP trophy.

Branch's SB39 MVP effort was hugely aided by Andy Reid's stupid insistence on sticking with scrub Matt Ware to cover him in the slot the whole 3rd quarter. They finally made the switch to Sheldon Brown and after that, Branch was shut out save for one crazy catch over Brown's back that Brown more than likely should have picked off if not outright batted away.

Legends are made by what a player does...and sometimes what an opponent does. Potential legends* go unremembered often thanks to what an opponent does or ones teammates do.

Back in the days when the Patriots won Super Bowls and had an offense which produced as well in the postseason as it did in the regular season and better in the 4th quarter than the 1st, we fans would scoff with derision at misguided fans who based their football discussions on statistics. Putting aside those statistics, this discussion isn't close - a 27 yr old Troy Brown was more valuable than a 27 yr old Wes Welker.

Troy Brown was a better all around football player than Welker, and the only reason his stats don't compare is because he played the slot position before it outgrew its place in the Pats offense. As a punt returner, Brown was a threat to return every punt for a TD; Welker was a threat to return it 35 yards or so if the punt was low. As a receiver, Brown could produce outside the numbers as well as inside. Welker was as useful as boobs on a bull when running an outside route(remember the 3rd and two play before the 4th and two play in Indy; a laughable attempt at a comeback route). Troy Brown's signature catch to get the Pats in FG range to win SB 36 where he had to reach and leap to catch but did and still managed to run out of bounds. Welker's signature SB moment was a pass he had to leap and reach to catch but couldn't pull in.

Welker played great, but we really missed the Gronk's presence. Can I change my name to Chris in Los Angeles? :D

There is one answer to all of our needs at WR, Tavon Austin. Mark my words, he will be a star in the NFL. Slot Receiver, Deep Receiver, Kick Returner, Punt Returner, Runningback. Dump Demps, save some cap space, and draft Tavon Austin. You can quote me on this, he will be one of the best receivers in the NFL within his first 3 seasons, and will be torturing the teams that don't draft him. If he's going higher than #29, trade up to get him.

Austin has great hands to boot, is a student of Wes Welker (has a ton of Welker highlughts on his iPad), and loves the Pats. This guy is the perfect pick.
