Boston Herald: Pats close to re-signing Vollmer

Yah! Sehr gut! Das ist fantastisch!

Bill Belichick was spotted having a sit-down discussion with Vollmer’s agent, Ben Dogra, Tuesday afternoon at the Biltmore resort, site of the meetings.

Not much to go on here. After the Welker fiasco, just call me when its over.

Can only see this is as a good thing.

Looks like just speculation than a concrete report.

Agree that this looks like baseless speculation to this point, solely based on what I read in the article. Plus, the timeline doesn't quite seem to work -- meeting with Vollmer's agent Tuesday, and then expressing interest in Winston on Wednesday. That seems to mean more that talks with Vollmer are breaking off rather than heating up.

What did you expect?

Unless the Patriots and Vollmer's agent hold a joint press conference to announce that things are close you will never get anything concrete until the player has signed.

Hope he lowers his financial demands now that he's learned that the market for an injury-prone RT with a chronic bad back isn't what he or his agent thought it was going to be. If he plays hardball, we can turn to Cannon, the kid from Atlanta they just signed or we can bring in a Bryant McKinnie who would fill in just fine.

Well that sounds like guesswork but I hope it happens soon because it's holding up other deals according to Reiss in his mailbag:

John, Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe had it at $15 million as of a couple days ago. It's in that range. One thing to account for is that the team is in a holding pattern until Sebastian Vollmer's status is solidified.

15 million in cap space is not good....9 million for vollmer, 5 million for rookies, and 1 million leftover to sign a pass rusher. You can kiss dumerville good bye.

Vollmer is not getting anything close to 9 million.

Yikes! Even if Vollmer was getting $9m per season (which he is definitely NOT), the first year cap hit wouldn't be anywhere near that high.

Yeah, there is no way that Vollmer gets 9 million. A RT with back issues won't get that much.

Vollmer won't get 9M/Year and even if he did they would never structure it so the first year cap hit was even close to that.

Beaty got 5/38.5
Loadholt got 4/25
Bushrod got 6/36

I think Vollmer will get something like Loadholt or Bushrod in the 6M/season range with 1/3rd up front.

When fully healthy may be the Pats best lineman. Of course he really has not been healthy for two years (and neither has Mankins). I hope to see Solder leapfrog Mankins and Solder this year and I hope Volmer is back and healthy.

The only good thing that can be gleaned from the article is that
Belichick and Vollmer's agent are still speaking to each other. The
title of this thread is misleading.

You're also quoting the lower end of the market. While the poster you're responding to is insane to think that Vollmer will get anything close to 9 million, not to mention he's failing to take into acct the year one cap hit, there are other OT's who may be comparable to him who are making more.

Cherilus got 7 million aav 5/34.5
Andre Smith is still waiting and expecting something in the 8--8.5 range
Jake Long received 9 million aav 4/36
Brandon Albert got 10m on the franchise tag

I think it's possible that Vollmer sees himself closer to the higher end of the market than the lower end, so something in the middle would probably be appropriate and fair. I would expect that to be in the 7--7.5 m range (what he's looking for). Of course I don't expect the Pats to pay that though, and I think they are looking at something in your 6m range, possibly even in the 5.5m range. Hopefully they can reach something near your 6m proposal as meeting in the middle.

But..but..all 3 of our big free agents are the BEST available this year at their positions, and will definitely be setting the market with the highest salaries :D

Comical thinking here on patsfans.
