Texans agree to terms with Ed Reed

To be honest, I don't know how much of an upgrade he is from Glover Quin who actually played pretty well last year.

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 32m

Ran into a coach at AZ airport. On Reed/Texans: "The guy they lost (Quin) could do everything, hit & cover. That's not Ed. He's 20 yds deep"

Like said above Quin could do everything

I would love to face the texans in playoffs again. As long as they have Schaub back there..i will gladly take them over Balt even with them losing a ton on D

Yeah, I don't know why they just didn't keep Quin. He got $4.7 million a year. Reports are that Reed got $6 million a year. I would have rather had Quin at those prices.

good news for us pats fans...Ravens D taking a big step back this year and we are playing them unlike houston. And come playoffs houston still has schaub. Win win for us that he went there

And the Ravens only had Flacco, the Giants only had Eli, the Colts had that choking dog named Peyton, the Steelers only had Roethlisberger in his second year, the Buccaneers only had Johnson, the Patriots only had Brady in his first year as a starter, The Ravens only had Dilfer, etc... That line of thinking works, right up until it doesn't.

Exactly. All it takes is for Schaub to go on a roll and "game manage" and as long as the rest of the Texans do their part, they have a chance. Schaub isn't a superstar but he can get the job done. A career QB rating of 91.9. I would go so far as to say worse starting quarterbacks than Schaub have gone on to win Super Bowls. I would not dismiss Houston so easily.

The bigger issue for the Texans is whether or not Cushing can stay healthy. If so, they'll be pretty scary on D. It's a good thing they're stuck with Schaub, but even he's potentially good enough to win a SB if the defense is good enough.

Trent Dilfer. Rthlsbrgr with a QBR of 22 comes to mind. Of course the refs really won that SB for the Steelers.

The Pats should not be overlooking anyone. They are 7-7 in the playoffs since they won SB 39. They done plenty of choking themselves.

Barwin gone, Quin gone, add Reed...on paper, the Texans are weaker than last year, and last year, they were very lucky on the injury front, other than one linebacker.

I don't know if they win their division this year, honestly.

I am relieved he ended up with the Texans. Better them than Denver, Baltimore, or Indy.

Ed Reed is past his prime. He may improve their D but not considerably. Ravens fans were not pleased with his play last year.
That is right. In December I drove thru Baltimore on my way to DC. Listening to their sports talk radion it was all Raven talk and much of it centered around Leis and Reed. The over whelming consensus from both the hosts and people calling in was that Reeds best days were way behind him and it was time to move on

If Cushing and Watt stay healthy most of the season...Houston is a top 3 defense without a doubt.

Before free agency NFLN had someone who covered the Texans. He opined that the one player they couldn't replace was Quinn.

I think people have been so spoiled for so long that they forget just how difficult it is to win in the play-offs.

Obviously when you're stringing together championships, you're going to have a great play-off record. But being around .500 in the playoffs without winning a championship isn't actually terrible. In fact, a lot of Super Bowl winning teams are around that mark after the fact.

A SB win inflates the record, but every other play-off team that doesn't win looks statistically similar. A top seed that goes to the Super Bowl and loses will finish 2-1, while a team that gets killed in the wildcard round will be 0-1; not a huge variance here due to the small sample sizes.

The Packers are 1-2 in the play-offs since winning it all. The Saints are 1-2. The Bucs are 0-2, having only played in 2 play-off games since their 2002 win. The Steelers are 2-2 since their last SB. If you include their last SB run as an extension of their first SB run, you could say they're 6-3, but they also missed the play-offs 3 of those years too, and again, outside of the Super Bowl runs, they're 2-3. Super Bowl runs = significant boost to record. All others rarely see it.

After Peyton Manning finally won a SB, he went 2-4 with the Colts (those 2 wins being part of their second Super Bowl run, where they finished 2-1). The Colts and Manning are both now 2-5 since the SB win with this season's losses to Baltimore.

The Ravens went 6-7 in the play-offs after winning the SB in 2000, but that didn't prevent them from running off 4 wins in a row, although they were also a minute away from being 1-1.

If we look solely at records, the Giants are probably the best example, but part of that is because they didn't get to play many play-off games after winning a SB. They went 0-1 in the 2008 playoffs after winning in 2007, then missed the play-offs entirely in 2009 and 2010. After winning it all in 2011, they missed the play-offs again in 2012.

So really, pretty much every team that has won a Super Bowl has a record around .500 in the playoffs since that time, except for perhaps the Giants, who didn't even make the play-offs half the time. Only the SB winner gets to inflate their playoff mark by any significant margin. Some of those records even include SB runs, like Manning's second which still finished with only 1 game above the .500 mark.

I'm not saying we've been fantastic in the play-offs, just that to keep repeating the record over and over and over as proof of a massive choke job is disingenuous. The record really indicates that we haven't won a Super Bowl in a while. Let's not make it into something that it isn't.

I'm expecting Ravens to be a non factor.
Houston doesn't scare me
Actually no team in the east concerns me that much

I think SEA and SF have improved significantly. And I think it will be really tough to win the SB if we have to go thru one of them

comments like this used to be made about eli and flacco

in the nfl these days, people evolve (sometimes)

it's a crazy league

I think it's safe to say Wade Phillips is about maxed out as a DC, and he's the real reason the Texans have no chance against the Pats. His scheme is just begging to be ripped apart by a two tight end offense, and they don't both even need to be good tight ends. The Pats scored 40 on the Texans twice, each time without one of their tight ends. Getting Cushing back will help, but they also just lost their main TE defender in Quin.

This is a good signing for the Texans since they lost Quin, but a lot of people are making it out to be a bigger move than it really is. Reed is still very good, but he's lost a step. Watt and Cushing are going to determine just how far that defense will take them.

Having said that, I also expect the Texans to be hunting for a WR or S early on in the draft.
