Potential WR trade candidates

I'm not saying we should trade for him - just saying he's a possible target.

It's all good. This thread was created for opinion...that's all.

I like Britt. Imagine the #s he'd put up with Brady tossing him the ball.

Ground Round?

I don't get the Sanders love....living near Pitt. I'm privied to all the Steeler news (lucky me).

This guy is, as injury prone as they come, and he has a fumbling issue.

This is not the answer.

I hope to god the Pats don't go this route.

Well for starters, let's try to keep in mind the direction that Patriots are likely heading with their offense for this season.

To me, it looks like they're trying to find positionally versatile receivers with excellent quickness and explosive ability to get open that can align anywhere and still get open consistently. Though a Julio Jones type receiver would flourish in New England, from all indications this offense won't revolve around the WRs so they don't need to be elite talents to get the job done (though that wouldn't hurt). They would just need to be good enough to maximize their talents in their respective roles. Sanders fits the bill as a receiver with good quickness to gain separation in this scheme along with WR positional versatility. That's why the Patriots are interested in him and for the same reasons why they signed Amendola.

The offense next season will be all about Gronkowski and Hernandez. Everything will start and end with them. The duo of those two is better than practically any receiver tandem in the NFL. They're the focal part of the Patriots offense as they should be.

Fumbled 5 and lost 3 in 3 seasons. I'm not sure what constitutes prone in your world

But is it wise to depend on them when Hernandez has shown that he always gets injured and struggles to play through injury. Usually when he's injured he loses his explosiveness for the entire year and only gets it back after a full offseason to heal.

I don't know...that maybe he only saw 15 to 20 percent of those offensive snaps! Lol!

5 fumbles for the amount of touches sanders has is rediculous!

If a FO had a contingency plan for every player that might get hurt, or get hurt again the team would accomplish nothing. Gotta go with your talent and the TE are it.

You cant plan for this stuff. You have to go out and assume that you huge assets are going to perform. If they get hurt, they get hurt and you improvise.

Also, having a well stocked WR group like DA, Sanders, Jones, JE, and perhaps Lloyd back on the cheap with camp fodder and shadow roster guys insures you have bodies at your disposal. Who knows maybe even a nice draftee to compliment it all.

Plus again, they made an attempt at Jennings.

I think with this team it is better to have solid WRs with less drop off in talent then an elite guy with more drop off in talent.

Plus at this point cap room is getting tight. Vollmer JE etc are up next. You dont protect Brady it wont matter who he is throwing to.

Dante can turn **** to gold...

They will not over pay, for another OL.

Dante can turn **** to gold...

True and nothing wrong with gambling on that but the gamble is Marcus Cannon.

While we all spend most of our time discussing the skilled positions because they are sexy we do still need to remember that a decent WR with an upright QB is better than an Elite WR with a dead QB

Sometimes you have to try to find the next Cruz. You cant always sign and trade for the proven commodity. They are in a tough spot now. Cap is tight. Still have needs. Another WR is going to cost them.

Not saying we'd trade for him, but damn,

Greg Salas would be nice to have on the roster.

I love the thread idea, and all of your candidates would be fine additions.

The concerns I'd have with Victor Cruz:

1.--he and the NYG are currently having problems regarding his new contract. It's hard to try and assess what they've offered him, but I'm going to take a stab at around 10 million dollars. The WR market continually goes up every year much like the QB market, at least for the elite receivers. Last year we saw guys like VJax setting the standard at about 11 million aav, this year that went up to 12 million aav with Wallace/Harvin. Next year Cruz has the potential to at least bring in what Wallace/Harvin did at 12 million aav.

That means we'd have to set a price that would outweigh what the NYG are willing to match, while at the same time being careful not to underbid at set the terms of their contract for them. In other words, the NYG may very well end up losing Cruz next year if they don't want to pay him 12 million dollars a year, and all accts point to them losing him. If we bid in at 10-11 million and they match it, we'll have just given them a discount and allowed them to retain Cruz for another 5 yrs.

2.--I have a hard time seeing Belichick part with a 1st rounder since they are known for such awesome value. We have a great track record in acquiring 1st rd picks, and have the potential to lock up a very, very cheap and productive player for the next 5 yrs. Obviously the good teams are built through the draft, and giving up a 1st is risky in itself. Cruz would obviously be worth it--but at a very high compensation. That tends to almost offset the move in a way.

3.--I also have a hard time seeing Belichick give someone 11+ million dollars a year at this position. Considering that we'd have to do that AND give up a 1st round pick, we may seriously as well look into bringing in anyone of the top talents in the NFL including Revis, Fitzgerald, etc. They may take an additional pick next year in the draft, but you may get someone to agree to a 3rd round pick or so in 2014. It would likely be worth exploring that option IF you're going to give up a first and pay them 11+ million.

To sum it up, I love the idea of exploring other trade options for the WR position. Most of them aren't going to be cheap, so we need to think about the value too. Although Sanders isn't our ideal choice in this situation, putting him in the mix with Brady for a few seasons by giving up a 3rd round pick and approx. 6 million a year may not be such a bad idea when you consider everything else.

I would also like to still choose a high draft pick this year since most of them take a year or so to get acclimated to the system. This would assure us a mix of youth, speed, depth, and experience to our WR corps--all while providing good financial value. It would address the need for a revamped WR corps while allowing us to stretch the field more and get younger at the same time.

If someone else comes up for a potential trade like any one of your options, then I would hope that Belichick gives them all long thoughts.

It's OK to be wrong on occasion. He's lost 3 fumbles. It's hardly an epidemic.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter
RT @BAMA_FAN13: With Pats releasing Lloyd, do they have eyes on other WRs? ... Imagine if Pats starters were Amendola and Emmanuel Sanders.

Interesting response. I get the sense that Schefter knows that the Pats are going to eventually make an offer to Sanders, timing still unknown at this point. There is a reason that he gets so much inside info....teams trust him.

I think it's generally accepted for the moment that we are waiting on Pitt to spend money to lower the requirements to sign Sanders.

WOW this thread took the words right out of my mouth. I figured BB would be looking for a trade to get a WR. I was thinking what if he got nicks from the giants. we know they wanna keep cruz and keeping two top line WR might not work out for the giants considering their cap. Add in that nicks was injured and missed games and this could cause giants to trade him since he would still be looking for a big contract regardless of his injuries. Seems like he would make for a plausible trade candidate but just my two cents.

As Coach Belichick once said, "Football players play football." Injuries are apart of the game and can happen to anyone anywhere on or off the football field.

Having depth in the emergency of injury is the only real contingency plan teams can have against it.

I'm good with this:

1. Sanders
2. Amendola
3. 1st/2nd round rookie
4. Jones/Edelman
5. Jones/Edelman

To Schefter's snide comment, the WR core has been worse with definitely worse upside the last 3 years.

2012:

1. Welker
2. Lloyd (overrated #2 WR)
3. Branch (useless)

2011:

1. Welker
2. Branch (below average #2 WR)
3. Ochocinco (useless)

2010:

1. Welker
2. Branch (average #2 WR)
3. Tate (useless)

I can definitely see Sanders be better than 2010/2011 Branch and 2012 Lloyd. It lies on Amendola to stay healthy and be 75% of Wes.
