Contract details for Washington, Jones - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

The key here: almost zero guaranteed dollars. So he's not at all a lock to make the roster.

2013
Base salary: $630,000 (non-guaranteed)
Reporting bonus: $200,000
Roster bonus: $235,000
Incentives/other terms: $125,000
Cap charge: $1.19 million

2014
Base salary: $730,000 (non-guaranteed)
Reporting bonus: $200,000
Roster bonus: $235,000
Incentives/other terms: $250,000
Cap charge: $1.415 million

2015
Base salary: $745,000 (non-guaranteed)
Reporting bonus: $200,000
Roster bonus: $235,000
Incentives/other charges: $375,000
Cap charge: $1.55 million

I hope he makes the roster...

Serious question....

Why is that? He's a 6'0 215+/- guy who's career YPC is lower than Welker's. If he doesn't make the roster, what are you thinking they'll be losing out on? Are you thinking the issue was Fitzpatrick, or something like that?

Mostly because he's the only legitimate outside receiver on the roster.

Maybe I shouldve waited until July/August to make that statement.

Wouldn't mind a few more silmiar deals for cheap FA WR's, including Edelman. Hopefully a couple stick

And I was telling Andy the team was not even sure this guy would pan out

Nice Patriot friendly contract...

Whew low risk medium reward good deal.

Am I weird to believe that BB signed the wrong ex Bill? I like David Nelson. He could be a stud here imo.

Something must be up. A contract like that has total protection.

Either the team legitimately thinks that with our TE and RB group that we can thrive with a combo of DA/Jones/Possible Sanders/JE/ perhaps gambling on a pick with some unproven practice squad guys and guys like Branch and Stallworth in the bullpen.

With again another solid vet (as they have a long time to find either a FA or Roster cut.

Or

They are looking for a big name WR and they want their contingency guys to be easily cuttable should they get their guy.

If Sanders isnt signed and Jones is on this type of deal anything is possible.

Donald Jones confident illness won't threaten his career - Press Coverage | The Buffalo News

Believed to be a minor kidney disorder. If he's over that, they he gets a reasonable payday. If he's not over it, then the Pats cut him without losing anything.

He likely won't make the team but with a contract like that it doesn't hurt to kick the tires and see what's there. If nothing, then he gets cut and they lose nothing either way.

We have had a WR on the roster that is worse than Jones (sometimes more than 1) at least for the last 4 years, and at least 9 of the 12 seasons BB has been here.

He won't make the team? Who's spot is he vying for?

That's irrelevant to this situation. Jones is a roster long-shot regardless of the other machinations this season or any other for that matter.

He's a highly unproductive mediocre receiver at best and has struggled mightily with drops over his career so far. I see no reason why anyone would be relying on Jones as a lock to make the roster. In all likelihood, he won't but, even if he does it will be because he greatly exceeded expectations (unlikely). Either way, he'll be no higher than #3 on the WR depth chart.

There's a reason why the Bills felt strongly enough to move on from him without any hesitation. The lack of tender proves that they thought very little of him.

He won't make the team? Who's spot is he vying for?
Hie'll likely compete in training camp with a variety of other JAGs and perhaps a draft pick(s?) for #3/4 WR reps and he'll likely carve out a niche for himself as a core special teamer (he'll have to if he expects to make the team).

Jeez maybe you could have a little optimism?

The central theme of "Ozymandias" is the inevitable decline of all leaders, and of the empires they build...*

Little to no room for optimism there.
