From Pro Football Talk:

WOODY TO GET STIFFED BY LIONS
A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the Detroit Lions very soon will be cutting center Damien Woody.
Woody jumped to the Lions from the Patriots in 2004, signing a six-year, $31 million contract with a $9 million signing bonus. His salary is scheduled to jump from $1.75 million in 2006 to $4.5 million in 2007.
He played 16 games in 2004 and 16 games in 2005, but was injured in the fifth game of the 2006 season and did not return.
Woody was fined multiple times for being overweight, and was accused of harassing a 28-year-old woman for whom he'd allegedly promised he'd leave his wife.

I guess the grass isn't greener on the other side.

Why do people keep calling this man a center? Does he have it printed on his business cards or something?

Because they only remember him as a member of the Pats, you actually become invisible whne you play in Detroit.

Someone again, please tell me, why does Matt Millen still have a job?

Because the skeleton's in the Ford's closet must be a plenty!

I liked Woody and didn't blame him for cashing in, but why give the highest center contract at the time to a center who doesn't know how to snap the shotgun and had weight issues. He was doomed to play guard long before Detriot signed him. Yet another example of why the Ford family should have never hired Matt Millen.

I don't know if it was greener per se but there certainly was a lot more of it.

Another example of a name that they thought would be big for another franchise, however when he played for the Pats he was part of a team.. something many folks do not get and if they ask would never understand.

He should go play for the Raiders NM

He should go play for the Raiders

Actually before he injured himself and left for detriot, he was a great run blocker. I rather see him (talent wise) at RG than Neal.

I would agree with this statement if Woody is in shape. If not, let Him go to The Raiders!

Did he really cash in?

It's time to put to bed the myth that players leave the Patriots and cash in, because it's not true in Ty Law's and Damien Woody's case. They both would have made better money had they stayed.

Woody is out 4.6 million salary this year, and he's not going to sign for anywhere near that anywhere else. He's a Vet Min type player at this point. So you have to reduce that contract he signed by that amount, and also the last two years of the contract.

He made $9 million signing bonus plus $4 million salary in 3 years. Good for you damien, but anyone in the league--including the Patriots--would have paid you $3 million per season back in 2004. In fact, that's what the Patriots offered, and if he'd sgned for that with an average of $3 per, he'd be collecting today.

Instead, if he only signs for the Vet Min for the next couple years, he will have made $14.5 over 6 years, much less than he would have made had he not priced himself out the market.

Tedy Bruschi understands the principle. Take less money, don't take a backloaded contract, don't give them incentive to cut you. When you take a backloaded inflated contract, you're just never going to see the money. You're practically asking them to kick you to the curb.

Unfortunately, the players all have agents whispering in their ears, and for the agents the incentive is certainly in getting as much money up front as possible, even if it means much less money over the player's career. Of course, Tedy didn't have an agent.

I don't think the Pats need a big Woody

The Pats should give Woody a huge contract to prove to him they

are not cheap. Ha!

Unfortunately, his talent doesn't outweigh his other issues.
