I was reading Peter King and he had an interesting point about a team like the Saints having a ton of cap room and feeling they are very close to winning a title. Clearly their biggest need is CB where they were starting players who had been benched or cut by the team previously. If they thought they could add an impact player in a trade it might be worth it to them.

Saints, picking 27th in the first round, have about $21 million in cap room. If the Samuel contracts get no where do you trade him for the 27th pick and try to sign some FA's and use the picks to get one of the top CBs?

A quick look at this class.

Plus rumored cuts because of the cap

If you could bet Lucas at 75% of the pay of Samuel and pick up a first rounder that you control for 5 years I think it's a good move. You can then look at signing Thomas and maybe getting an extension done with Warren.

I know people are of the mind to bring Samuel back and he'll be motivated but IMO his value will never be higher than it is now.

Just food for thought.

Yes, I make that trade. At pick #27 the player drafted is signed for 5 years at cheap money. It is very unlikely New Orleans would make a trade like this.

I think there's no way ANYONE here thinks that would be anything except the IDEAL situation. Trade him for a #1 pick to a team we hardly ever play, and then sign a decent+ corner to replace him? Done and done.

You "under-estimate" the people here. :singing:

according to espn, they think the top 2 corners are clements and samuel, and they're pretty much going to be competing for the biggest paycheck

i dont think the saints would trade their 27, there are few teams that have as much cap room as the saints...if anything they'll pay samuel or clements in free agency and keep their 1st round pick

whats interesting is how much each team will be willing to pay for clement or samuel, its not like a ty law, whos 30+, samuel is 25 or 26, and clements is 27, they both have 5, 6 years left in them....

all in all, i see samuel being the highest paid corner this year, since he's just now entering the prime of his career

not to mention his stellar pro bowl worthy season

I would love it if we traded him for that pick... that would be 3 picks in the 20s... ridiculous. we would hit at least 2. guaranteed.

If the Saints don't want to couldn't we trade with another team?
There has to be a stupid screwed up team that would do this trade or something very similar

Look at Seattle giving up a #1 for Branch to put them over the top. There's always going to be a team that feels they are soooooooo close that they'll over pay for the piece they feel will put them over the top.

I think BB/SP will explore options like this without a doubt.

god i hope so.

That's the great thing about morons, they always make you look better.

Exactly. If someone will give a 20s pick (Seattle thought it would be 25+ pick) for Branch then I wouldn't put it past a team to give up a pick in the teens for Samuel considering he is more highly touted and playing a position that lacks star players (whereas WR is flooded with them).

Personally, I would rather pay Clement than Samuel. I think Clement is that big physical CB we have needed for a long time. He is better in press coverage than Samuel. I would give Clement the contract and tag and trade Samuel (at least in a perfect world scenario).

I think if anyone offers us a first rounder for Samuel, we take it. Going into this season, Samuel was arguably not even the best CB on the team. He really didn't play all that well early and had a great mid to end of the season and playoffs. How much of that was him going all out to get a big deal and how much of that was Samuel turning the corner into a great CB. It is a tough gamble for a guy due a huge contract.

its not possible. samuel is an unrestricted free agent. we would have to franchise him before we could trade him. compensation for a franchised player is 2 1st round draft picks. if we resign him, then we can trade him. but its not gonna be cheap. someone else will overpay...(jets, buffalo, saints) but if we resign him then why trade him?

Well lets see - WE were 00:01:00 from the Super Bowl... WE have tons of cap room - why don't WE pay him? Draft picks don't always pan out. See the Marquise Hill thread.

Why would anybody give up a draft pick for someone who is a free agent? Am I missing something here?????

If we franchise Samuel and trade him, we create another need

for our team in 2007. The dilemma is that other than Clements and

Samuel the free agent class of cornerbacks is weak. Also, any

cornerback we draft probably won't be much use in 2007.

You can trade a player after you have franchised them, for whatever compensation you are willing to accept, and whatever the other team is willing to part with.

"Why would anybody give up a draft pick for someone who is a free agent? Am I missing something here?????"

If you franchise him, he is no longer a free agent (in the normal parameters of the term), and can be traded.

im sorry, i said that wrong. he can be SIGNED by another team still if hes franchised but they would have to compensate 2 first round draft picks. (the high tender).

I think if anyone gives a 2nd rounder you take it. I will be shocked if anyone gives a first orunder going into this draft.

One of the reason Seattle gave a first rounder was because they were making an early withdrawal on that draft. They were going into the season rather than entering the offseason. They wanted immediate results. I feel if the Pats had waited until after the season they wouldn't have gotten a #1.

The Jest got a #1 pick for Abraham. I know pass rushers are at a premium but he's always hurt and big play CB aren't exactly easy to get either. I would take a #2 along with freeing up the Samuel money to spend elsewhere - but from a comparison standpoint, Samuel should fetch what Abraham did. What I'd actually like is a 2008 #1, I'd love to have two #1s this year and next.

2 number 1's in 2008 would be smarter...b/c you never know who will boom out onto the national scene next year

and if you're lucky, your pick can become more valuable next year....

like the redskins last year...they made the playoffs, and basically traded away all their mid round picks for this year's draft...teams who traded with the skins last year were expecting a pick in 20's...but since the skins had such a terrible year, they're picking in the top 10 of the round...

so if the pats did franchise then trade samuel for a #1 pick in 08, to say the saints....which will probably generate a pick in the 20's....the saints could go into the next year and have injuries...then they can have a terrible year, and get a top 10 pick....since there was a trade, now the pats would get the top 10 pick, along with their pick...

of coruse thats all in a dreamers world lol
