It wasn't the money; it was the principle | Comcast SportsNet - CSNNE.com

Last summer, his agent Brian Murphy came to Foxboro after Welker was franchised to talk deal with the Patriots. Murphy sat down and . . . no Kraft . . . no Belichick. It was Patriots advisor Floyd Reese he was negotiating with.

Murphy was dumbfounded to see that a supposedly serious meeting was not attended by anyone with the capacity to finalize the deal or change the offer.

And at the end, Murphy said that Reese apologized for wasting Murphy's time.

The beat went on. After signing the franchise tender and tweeting it was a "leap of faith" and that he hoped the Patriots would do the right thing, the Patriots had the gall to call Welker on the carpet for being disrespectful.

This was management against player, and management had its way. Until Welker had a chance to get his way. And he took it.
pretty sad if this is how it happened. Wish they had simply not made an offer in FA and said they are moving on . Wouldve been cleaner.

thats life there is no love when it comes to money i wish Welker the best hope he has a great season

If anyone's ego was in play here it is McDaniels'

4 Rams now on the roster

Welker, one of the best Pats ever, frozen out last season's start for no reason, then jettisoned for a Ram much worse and who has a bigger contract

.

Someone please explain to me why BB is the bad guy or in any way wrong?

He set a market for Wes. Wes hit the open market and the best he could do was 2 mil more. Seems like BB was spot on and Wes was just pissed he wasn't worth more or that we didnt feel the need to offer more than anyone else was willing.

Alrighty then, it's not because those guys happened to be coached by McDaniels so he would know if they understood the system. You act like they broke the bank to get any of these guys. Amendola has been stated to be a possible fit here for years, especially after 2010 when he WASNT coached by McDaniels.

Actually, you have your facts wrong yet again.
Amendola's deal is a 2/3 with only 10 million guaranteed compared to Welker's 12.

Salas is gone. Lloyd was from Denver

But the Pats wasted a pick trading for him

McDaniels should not partake in personnel discussions

Agreed. Plus, the Pats apparently felt that putting money toward a five-year investment in Amendola was more prudent than two years of Welker. But, there's also more to come.

All the money we wasted trying those guys when such other tantalizing options were out there for a 3rd and 4th tight end as well as a developmental receiver traded for late in august.

The horror we could have had Kamar Aiken 10 weeks sooner if McDaniels was kept out of the GM room!

That was Murphy's story ... believe none of what you hear and 1/2 of what you see.

Look ... we're talking about millionaires here ... seriously ... we're pitying millionaires ... NOT!!!

Who gives a crap about ego ... I give a crap about Rings and it's been 8 years ... screw you Curran you creeper.

I have nothing more than the suspicion that it all does in fact boil down to egos.

Perhaps Wes' fun loving prankster-prone attitude was feeling oppressed under Belichicks stern, business-centric thumb.

And perhaps Wes has enough of the #1 WR diva ego that he was in fact pretty angry that the upstart McDaniels and the Patriots attempted to decentralize his role on the offense.

He reacted. The coaches reacted and who the hell knows what snowball got start rolling.

Its all wild conjecture of course, but it fits better than the alien concept that the Patriots didnt feel he was worth a 2 year 12 million dollar contract.

You're kidding, right?

People are really missing the boat on Edelman taking Welker's snaps at the start of last season. I realize I am nobody important, I'm not Greg A. Bedard, I'm not Mike Giardi, I'm not Tom E. Curran. I'm not Mike Reiss.

But they all missed something.

Edelman flat out out-performed Wes Welker in training camp last year. It's as simple as that. You know how Tom Brady always says, "every year I feel like I need to fight for my job."

He's not lying.

Edelman stole the job from Welker, it's as simple as that. I went to 9 or 10 practices last year and at almost every single practice Welker dropped a ball. Edelman showed better speed and rarely dropped a ball, I remember one over the course of the days I was there.

So, for me, this confirmed what Brady said. He does have to earn his job every year, and so doesn't every single other player.
