Free Agent CB Aqib Talib a priority for Pats

Also a priority for redskins now

Good it's nice to have a real corner out there. Though his injuries are a concern.

Good, resign the guy you know fits in your system.

I hope we sign Talib to a good contract. Really liked what he brought to the table when he was healthy.

But $8M would be too much. I'm hoping for $6 or $7M. And if the Redskins are going to give him 6 years, $55M like they did with DeAngelo Hall (who they then cut after year 3), then so be it.

He is the perfect signing for them actually. They will overpay and we can trade for him in a few years for 5th.

Agreed.

I would be surprised if we didn't draft both a corner and wide receiver high in the draft

Would also have to draft another cb in the draft fairly high. In the draft.

Talib (6'1" 205lbs)
DRC (6'2" 182lbs)
Rhodes (6'2 217lbs)
Dendard (5'10" 200lbs)
Dowling (6'1" 210lbs (maybe 230 with his eventual bodycast))

Adrian Wilson (6'3" 230lbs)
Devin McCourty (5'10" 195lbs)
Tavon Wilson (6'0" 210lbs)
Steve Gregory (5'11" 200lbs)

That'd be a very nice combination of size and athleticism in the secondary, maybed matched only by Seattle. (edit, i just realized how much the CBs outsize the Safeties in this situation lol)

Dominique Rogers Cromartie is a lot taller than I thought he was, pairing him and Talib outside with Dennard and Rhodes sharing time in the slot, A.Wilson and DMC at SS and FS respectively, T.Wilson splitting time at SS to eventually take over, Gregory a solid backup.

I think thats a vastly improved secondary from last season but it'd be tough to sign both DRC and Talib but I think Wilson could come cheap. It'd also hinder making many other big moves in FA, should still be able to sign Welker though. Tier 1/1.5 talent, above average depth, hopefully acceptable prices.

This would be my ideal secondary based on this offseason, I'd much rather have a monster pass rush as I think it will have a greater effect on the QB but top pass rushing options are either resigning, have been tagged, or are one trick ponies this offseason. Something needs to be done and this is obviously a FA period where the secondary can be improved by insane margins at maybe bargin prices due to the number of options and many teams being too far up against the cap to drive a bidding war.

You really think we can afford all those DB's without sacrificing a different area of the team?

DB market will be cheaper than last year, there are already reports of prioritizing Talib in addition to adding another higher profile CB, Wilson will hardly break the bank at being a 33 year old safety, and Rhodes is a draft choice.

It's not exactly spending a lot of money, and the only big FA we'd really sacrifice losing is Vollmer who shouldn't be paid LT money to play RT for us.

I think it's doable but close. I've only added 3 FA's, and DRC/Wilson shouldn't be nearly as expensive as Talib. Rhodes will basically play for free on the rookie wage scale and the rest are on the roster already.

I also see it as a necessary risk to make seeing there might not be another chance in the near future to upgrade the secondary so much so quickly and for potentially so little. It's not every season that the market becomes flooded with so many players at one position. The Salary Cap will being to inflate within the next few seasons and these cap-casualties will begin to happen at a lower rate. Need to take advantage of it now while we're in position to and still have one of the best QB's to ever play the game playing at an outstanding level.

While the offense IS what has been stalling in playoffs at times lately, having a defense with more playmakers and an enhanced ability to generate takeaways will certainly help the offense even without adding another offensive playmaker.

I think it's doable but close. There are only 3 players who will cost any money, and 2 of the 3 should be relatively easy. Talib is the only bank-breaker.

I like your idea, but I agree with Leemo that it may be too much dedicated to one positional grouping. There's no need to move Dennard in the slot in my opinion. He proved to be just fine in his rookie year and could make a nice leap up in his second.

I wouldn't see any scenario where Belichick would fail to take advantage of having an adequate starter on a cheap rookie deal, that wouldn't make much sense to me. You are also not factoring in Arrington in the slot, and by all accounts the team wants him back. He should be pretty cheap, around 2-3 million at the most.

I also think that when it comes down to it we won't see Talib resign here unless it's for a shorter term deal and/or reasonable money. There are just way too many options as you have noted. He isn't as much as a priority as some are acting like, and poses an insane injury risk. The guy's had the same 2 injuries for three consecutive seasons (IR in 2010 and 2011), and in all three seasons he's missed significant time at the end of the year. I don't see how we can count on that, and it seems to be way too much of a pattern, particularly as the season progresses and winds down.

I'm sure BB wants him back, but whether or not Talib agrees to the money and terms that BB wants him back on is an entirely different question. If it's not him them you could add in any number of other options which may be cheaper anyway.

I agree entirely with your proposal to add depth to the entire secondary, I just think we'd need to pull one of the higher priced guys out and replace him with Arrington for a more reasonable solution that would allow us to address all of the other areas of concern.

My note on moving Dennard to the slot is more about what we expect his availability to be. We might need to replace him outside for a period of time which we don't know yet. If the market is flooded I'd like to see us strike now.

I would also prefer another CB over Talib, but, there are a few signs pointing to us wanting him above anyone else at the moment so that's the reason I went with him, that decision was more about what I THINK will happen while the rest of it is what I WANT to happen.

I also like Arrington in the slot quite a bit but I see some team over paying for his services and using him as a #2, something we hope he wouldn't be again here as he isn't suited for it. He has stated that he's drawn interest during the past few days.

edit: I'm also projecting the offense to return almost entirely intact with the exception of Vollmer.

Welker resigned, retain Lloyd (lets face it, it'd be extremely difficult to replace 900+ yards for 4m). Gronk and AH getting healthy over the offseason. Ballard should be fully recovered by now, Line stays mostly intact, both guard spots getting healthy. RB is hardly a priority, Vereen looked ready to take over Woodhead's role in the offense late last season, Demps could factor in at returner.

Should be cheap options to add depth at WR, reports we want Stallworth back, could throw an offer at D. Alexander, D. Nelson is out there. Branch is always willing. Draft is deep at DL and WR.

I see this free agency period as one where either the secondary or pass rush needs to be addressed in a big way, and the pass rush options aren't the most ideal anymore. WR has no real mid-level options, its either top talent or bottom talent.

I'm not seeing many other areas that can be addressed in any significant way, especially offense, in free agency. The draft is a much better spot for DL/WR help this year than free agency will be.

agree w/ addressing secondary in FA; but think most critical piece is the S.
Talib would be fine solution but not in isolation; they have to throw more at the wall. There are plenty of viable cost-effective names being thrown around.

I also dont see Dennard as a slot cb. IMO He is more a L/R outside guy. I dont think you move his position based on he might miss a 4 game suspension or something. Would you move players based on having missed games due to an injury? they just fall down the depth chart while out and move up when back based on practice week prior.

Good call here. On offense, what I would like to see:

QB: T. Brady
QB2: A.Rodgers
WR1: Megatron
WR2: L. Fitzgerald
RB1: A. Peterson
RB2: S. Ridley

Back to CB, whats wrong with Dennard as a starter CB2? He is good enough. There are too many positions on the team to fill instead of finding someone to bump him down on the depth chart. Do you really think he is missing time? Also the best CB addition BB can make is a defensive end to cut loose on third downs.

How is you choosing the best players at their position anything remotely similar to me choosing players available in FA who could be had for reasonable amounts? You're over exaggerating by a mile. Talib is the most expensive player I named who could probably be signed for 7-8m, DRC for 5-6, and Wilson for around 3 or 4 most likely. These aren't all 10-12m/yr deals I'm naming or some all-star studded defense.

It's also funnier to me because 5 of the players I named are on or would be on rookie contracts, and another, Gregory, isn't exactly making a killing (though it would be a lot for a #3/4 option) and 5 of the 6 you named are on 12m/yr+ deals. SUCH SIMILAR SCENARIOS.

I like Talib but I wouldn't "make him a priority" or give him a giant contract.

I think the improvement on D was due to the McCourty safety move mostly. Talib obviously helped, being a very competent corner, but I think you could put someone like Nnamdi there (who I still think could once again have success in the league) and use him the same way you would see the same results.

I think we could take the money that Talib would demand and spend it on a quality starter (who may be a little more dependable off field), as well as some decent depth at the position.

Best comment about the Redskins' interest so far from PFT:

"Redskins' GM wants to prove that Obama isn't the only one in Washington who wants to spend money he doesn't have."
