Ed Reed to the Niners? NBC Speculation

I don't know what the big fuss is with Reed. He has lost a step and would probably only be on your team for a year maybe two. I would much rather have McCourty starting than Reed.

reed is more than just a player. he brings leadership skills to a defense in much need of a leader. look what happened to bernard pollard - he was a castoff before reed tutored him in baltimore. he'll do the same with mccourty and the other young guys in the secondary.

So this was what it feels like to be a fan of the jets for the past decade.

...well, maybe not that bad

why wouldn't you want to go to the 49ers?? they are favorites to win SB.

This just in pats fans... the patriots aren't the best and most favorable place to play anymore...

yeah i dont want reed... i like chung and gregory wayyyyy better

This doesn't work when people don't know if you're joking or not.

Ok how about this...

Gregory is a very hard hitting safety and makes plays on the ball
Chung is an extremely healthy player and can lead a defense

Thats smack talk if I ever saw it! HAHA

they never where... top FA's are looking to get the most money the pats have always looked for value in vets and jags and for the most part they find it, i know some fans dont like it but i can understand it if you fail on a 2 million dollor cantract or trade away a 4th round pick and it dose not work it dose not really hurt the team but if u pay a guy 15 million or trade away a #1 and it dose not work you set your franchise back for years

Why wouldn't you have both starting?

Because they are both free safety's. I would rather have a physical strong safety. I would only be interested in Reed if he signed for the vet minimum.

I think the defense has plenty of leaders (Wilfork, Mayo and Niko). IMO, the pats need a physical strong safety not two free safety's.

Chung is always in the right place. At this point in his career, I don't know if I could say the same for Reed.

:bricks:

Have you seen our DB play ohh the past 3-4 years?

Yes and I also witnessed the improvement when there was a #1 corner in the lineup. If the pats sign a decent #1 and replace Gregory with a physical safety who takes good angles, they will be in good shape. I just don't think you are getting good value signing a 35 year old Reed for $5 mill a year.

I think people take 'only interested in ___ if he comes for the min' a bit too far.

So if Reed said "I'll play for you for 1 year 3 million' you'd pass? How about 1 year, 1.5m?

I get passing on 2 years, 10 million. I'm borderline on that -- I'd do it if it can be turned into a 1 year / 5 million contract by cutting him if he plays poorly.

But if it were 1 year 3 mil, or 2/6 I'd be super happy.

In my opinion a strong safety is over-rated on this team. The front seven is good enough at stopping the run but they all suck in coverage. Would be nice if our safety could occasional blitz the qb -- but I'm more interested in taking away the deep ball and making it more difficult for opponents on intermediate routes.

If they had a guy like Reed covering the deep ball, it would also be interesting to see if they could get more creative with McCourty -- having him and Talib swap coverages mid-play, etc to confuse the qb. Or if Travis develops into a competent safety, McCourty remains starting safety but becomes a CB on nickel packages.

I'd prefer Adrian Wilson.

Problem is phillips is a FS....but he's great at covering TEs.

I think the desire for a "hard hitting" safety is overstated. Given the physicality we have at LB, I wouldn't mind two FS-types starting at safety.

Especially if one of those FS-types was hard hitting like Goldson :rocker: pipedream but he would be AWESOME in this defense.

That makes no sense.
