As I said on interview last night.. I have heard it's not out of the question to sign BOTH Welker and Amendola.

And Bedard confirms rumor:

Greg A. Bedard ‏@GregABedard@NEPD_Loyko
Agree with this.

Take it for what's it worth this time of year. Personally I tend to not get high or low with anything especially this time of year and specifically week before FA. But still interesting.

Not a terrible idea if they're dead set on cutting Lloyd.

If they cut Lloyd they should def look into this. Would love to have both. I don't think there's a rule that prevents you from having multiple slot receivers. Hopefully bring back Welker's alter ego Julian Edelman back on the cheap side.

they're trying to corner the market on white receivers. Edelperson would of course need to be resigned as well.

Maybe they'll lure Hartline from MIA and their reportedly close agreement on a contract.

It is amazing that the Pats are even in position to be able to do something like this. Impossible without Brady's extension where he voluntarily took less than market value. He could have easily demanded 18m+ per year yet only took 9m per season BECAUSE he just wants to WIN! LOVE IT!!

Now for Amendola, he would definitely add explosion to our kick return game. Now that we know Demps is unlikely to come back, we needed that ingredient to boost our ST. The nice thing is Amendola is young and in his prime at age 27. So he will be around a while. When Welker hangs up his cleats, Amendola can probably carry on at about 85% of Welker's level which is pretty solid.

What about Edelman though? He should resign for cheap. Doesn't have enough stats or hype to get anything big in free agency imo.

Plus they'll have to draft Connor Vernon and Ryan Swope. ;)

I don't understand this at all. If the Pats sign Welker and Amendola, they'd have to start both.

Unless the Patriots want to give up the 2/2/1 set, that means no new big receiver in the base offensive formation.

Anyway you look at it, having Amendola and Welker on the field at the same time is a downgrade from even Welker and Edelman as we saw early on, as at least Edelman can play outside.

What? We don't know this at all.

Jeremy Ebert likes that idea.

This would make no sense to me.

Obviously, McDaniels had a vision of an offense where the role of the small, undersized slot receiver was diminished. BB was on board with this vision. They tried it for a week and change. Injuries forced their hand and Wes Welker proved far too good for them to continue their tinkering.

We all understand them re-signing Wes because he's proven his value to this offense, whether it fits McD's prototype or not. Wes is probably the exception to the rule they are creating - the rule being, the more versatile the better.

So to add another high-priced slot receiver? WTF.

Why not sign David Nelson instead? Bigger, more versatile and far, far cheaper.

Yes....lets allow teams to stuff their pass defenders in a thick cluster near the LOS. We managed 13 points vs. Baltimore using that strategy

It makes some sense based on the idea of interchangeable parts

one goes down & all isn't lost

Why does everyone want Amendola so bad? He isn't a compliment to Welker when sharing the field and he isn't remotely close to a replacement for Welker if he leaves. It's like celebrating being the runner-up in a 2 man race.

What's with the love for him? He's played in 42 of 64 games including missing 20 of the last 32 and people argue that he isn't injury prone. His "ultra productive" seasons are half of Welker's yardage and he has a career YPC of 8.8.

I don't get it. This guy is NOT an acceptable replacement or outside compliment. We don't need ANOTHER underneath player, we'd have Welker, both tight ends, and then Amendola? Edelman if we bring him back?

With all these rumors flying around it only proves one thing - there are people more bored than we are trying to keep things interesting.

I have no issues with Amendola but why can't the rams keep receivers. They break out and then they're gone. Mark Clayton, Donnie Avery, Brandon Lloyd, Salas, etc. Their second round receiver hasn't done anything and their top guys in amendola and gibson drop like flies. They have some serious issues.

If they cut Lloyd and do this, completely terrible idea that shrinks our offense even more.

If you're a DC, why put two safeties on the field vs Welker Amendola Hernandez Gronk when three of them won't beat you past 10 yards? Just play 4-5-2, screw having safeties.

I wish you were the D-Coordinator for all of our opponents. We'd not only score more than 500 points for the 4th season in a row but break out old point record. If teams wanted to run with 5 LB's against us i'd actually be open to having both Amendola and Welker paired with Gronk and Hernandez.

Never in NFL history would an offense with as little speed score as many points.

Hahaha, this is a ridiculous notion. You try and cover Gronk and Ahern without safeties. They will run over the corners and blow by the backers.
