Reiss article on the CB position and who fits

Free-agent fit: Cornerback - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

DRC, Sean Smith and Talib is who he thinks they would target/fit.

The problem with Reiss' choices is that it really is narrowed quickly down to one.

S.Smith is asking for way too much money, reportedly in the double digits per year. Talib is probably not going to re-sign here unless he finds the market dried up in the first week or so, due to the fact that the front office won't want to give him a long term deal or even the money that he can get on the open market.

So that really leaves DRC. If that's the case I think it'd be fine. He had 17 passes defended last year, picked off 3 INTs, and has only missed 3 games in a five year total. No he hasn't lived up to expectations of being the 16th player taken in the draft, but he may be a reasonable option. At least the only reasonable option out of the 3 anyway.

sean smith can ask for a ton of $$..doesn't mean he will get it and he won't. market is flooded with CBs

sign Mike Jenkins and resign Talib & Arrington.

Jenkins, Talib, Arrington, Dennard, Dowling

Make a move and try to sign Dashon Goldson or Glover Quin. If we can't get either draft a safety in the 1st round.

Can't agree with you on this one. If we re-sign Arrington, where would Jenkins fit? He's a nickle corner---at best.

He's had 4/5 seasons of 1 INT or less, and 4/5 seasons of single digit passes defended.

My wife's favorite team is DAL, so I'm way too familiar with Jenkins and his underachieving ways. The fans there basically hate him. I think there are way better options than Mike Jenkins, and he doesn't fit our outside starting CB needs anyway, assuming Arrington stays. I'd want Arrington over Jenkins 10/10 times over.

How Belichick feels about Tavon Wilson moving forward will be a big factor as to what kind of safety we add.

We all assume that we'll be adding a top notch safety in the first/second round of the draft and/or a guy like Woodson, Reed, Goldson, etc.

That may not be the case, as we just took a safety in the 2nd round last year. Belichick may be inclined to simply add some depth and competition with a cheaper type veteran signing, although it may also be one who could start in a pinch if needed.

We may either get a band-aid signing for the immediate future, or even hold off altogether until next year with nothing more than a vet signing or two.

Brandon Carr who started ahead of him this past season played all 16 games and only had 11 PD. Jenkins in 2011 had 8 PD in 12 games. Arrington had 11 PD in 16 games this season.

Arrington has 2 seasons of 0 INT's. Jenkins and Arrington both have 8 INT's in their careers.

I too have Cowboy fans and they know he isn't the problem with their terrible team. Their entire secondary as a unit played like crap.

I fail to see the a reason to not want him. Esp when is isn't expected to start. He has speed, is young and solid press coverage skills that can improve with good coaching. Did I also mention he probably won't be that expensive? He's better than every corner on our team except Talib & Dennard.

All of us are going to have certain players that we'd wish to see pursued, and certain opinions on things that other posters don't agree with, so this is just a case of us having 2 different opinions.

I would disagree on Jenkins myself, you may feel differently.

I'd also disagree on the Cboys unit as a whole. I think that they have 2 very good up and coming outside CBs in Carr and Claiborne, and Carr not seeing as many targets was due to the rookie opposite him that many teams went after, along with the poor play in the slot of Jenkins. Their main problem is their safety play, which is terrible. That needs improvement immediately, along with their nickle CB, but their set on the outside very nicely. They should be with a 10 million dollar CB and a 6th overall pick in the draft.

If Belichick thinks that Jenkins can offer anything reasonable for a good cost, then he should definitely bring him in. I just don't personally see how he would be anything of an improvement over Arrington, who plays better in the slot. Either one of them can play outside worth a damn. I've seen games where Jenkins was the victim of deep plays 3-4 times in a row, and that was when he wasn't making DPI penalties. 2011 was a really bad season for him. I didn't see 2012 as quite as bad as 2011.

I respect your comparison, but remember that it was Arrington moving to the slot that was one of the big reasons why we improved last year. It was also Arrington's strong play in the slot against Victor Cruz in the SB, where he held him to a total of 24 yards.

These stats are fine on some level, but Jenkins has proven to be ineffective in the 80% of the time (4/5 seasons) that he's played.

This is a quote from Football Outsiders regarding Jenkins:

"Mike Jenkins just picked up what must be his 43rd pass interference penalty of the past two weeks on a crucial third down in Minnesota, giving the Vikings a new set of downs just before the two-minute warning."

This one's from the 2010 year where he led the league in pass interference penalties, which isn't even the same year as the quote above:

Cowboys corner Mike Jenkins takes league lead in pass interference penalties | Dallas Cowboys Blog

That's the guy I know. You obviously feel differently about his talents though, so we just have to agree to disagree. My assessment of Mike Jenkins in Dallas is that he has been a monumental bust, considering that he was taken in the 1st round. You claim that the fans don't resent that, but I strongly disagree.

McCourty has been a better corner than DRC. Why not just spend the same mpney on 2 quality safeties and pair them with McCourty and Dennard than overpay for an overrated corner. Better yet, fix the pass rush and the secondary issues will seem much less like issues.

That's the thing though about their secondary, terrible safety play. I think we can all agree that without good safety play a CB will be exposed. Jenkins hasn't been fortunate to play with good safeties or a consistent group around him.

A tandem of Talib and Dennard on the outside, with Jenkins at slot and Dmac and a good SS, would IMHO be pretty good.

Obviously there are better CB's out there but price is a huge factor. I think he could be had for a cheap contract and adds value with Arrington.

Gotta remember Dowling hasn't proved anything yet so we would really only be rolling with Talib, Arrington, Dennard, Mccourty and D-Mac will probably stay at safety.

If there isn't a drop off from Arrington to Jenkins, or if there is actually an improvement it's a win win. Both would be cheap to sign and if one gets injured we aren't relying a glorified special team guy.

Your argument makes sense on that level.

We just have a disagreement of our opinion of the specific player, that's all.

I definitely agree on what you're saying about the cost, upside, etc..so maybe if it isn't him it could be a player in that vein. That would make a lot of sense.

It doesn't have to be him, could be any player that fits the bill.

I only picked him as an example because he is a former first rd pick with upside and a skill set that with proper coaching could pan out for cheap. He's proved before he can play, maybe he just needs a change of scenery and better coaching. Dallas hasn't exactly had the best coaches recently.

Everything he writes is so obvious.. He brings nothing to the table IMO just writes the given.

I think you misunderstand his role at ESPN. He's not an analyst, just a stark news guy who does the occasional mailbag and summarizes general thoughts.

To addicts like us he brings nothing new to the table, since we're getting all the scoops and analysis directly from Bedard, Curran, etc.

I don't know how anyone can not like Reiss, the guy's like ESPN's version of Matt Slater.

love reiss..one of my favorites

if thats my choice ill take Ed Reed and draft Desmond Trufant to play CB next to McCourty

Just an opinion my man nothing we need to debate.. We all can't like the same things in life.
