If you could prove your Faith it wouldnt be Faith.

In the Age of Information, is there a compelling reason to assign any positive social value to having Faith? At this point is it little more than political correctness?

Faith drives people to action. Look at all the hospitals, nursing homes, colleges, schools, food pantries, homeless shelters, woman's shelters, housing projects, and missions built by people of faith.
Faith also drives people to social justice whether it be ending slavery, helping women obtain the right to vote, ending segregation, or in today's battles ending the scourge of abortion.

Faith does all this and gives solace to people with the knowledge that their life has true meaning and won't simply end in dust.

Faith is a place where people can hide and use their power to prey on unsuspecting young men and women, particularly in the Catholic Church.

Follow the current court cases about the Legion of Christ, Father Maciel and the women from Cumberland he duped into giving the "Legion" millions of dollars. Then there is the psychological abuse the girls suffered at the Immaculate Conception School in South Kingston, run by the Legion of Christ..

The Cardinal from Scotland who "played" with others..

The "Magdalena Laundries" in Ireland..

It goes on and on, all under the guise of faith.. this is why the Pope resigned after commissioning the study about the Vatican, he realized how deep the pathology of the Catholic Church, and how powerless he was to change it. It is so bad that is it kept secret, even at the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

Every day some new abuse is revealed, all under the guise of faith..

Well so much for the teaching profession where children are molested every day. But let's focus on the 3% of teachers who betray their trusted office rather than the 97% who faithfully execute it ever day.

It's not so much the "3%" (although I don't know where you get your figures at) which is alarming or disgusting - there will always be child abusers and there will always be adults who prey on children - as it is the massive cover-up which is making people question The Catholic Church. Any cover-up takes many more people than the original act of abuse took. Your 3% becomes 30%.

That being said, "faith" does not stop at The Catholic Church. All believers in all religions have faith. People without an organized religion can have faith and I am unsure what it has to do with political correctness.

It is certainly not "politically correct" in The United States to be a Muslim and yet Muslims have faith.

The comparison to teachers is epic fail..

Teachers do not profess to a faith, a system of beliefs, they do not take vows of celibacy.... there are molesters there as well. Priests are supposedly holy men who are held to a very high standard, leaders of their flock to which they have failed over and over again.

The Catholic Church, a church of faith, has become nothing more than a criminal organization that steals money from the unsuspecting and steals the souls of victims..

NIHIL OBSTAT: I have concluded that the materials
presented in this work are free of doctrinal or moral errors.

I admire those with a strong faith especially those with a strong live and let live faith.

I cannot stand:

Those who think everybody should have the same faith they have and that all other faith is misplaced and incorrect.

Those who scream about their faith but are frauds such as a Ray Lewis.

Those who profit off of faith such as a Jimmy Swaggart.

Those who push their political agenda by putting faith up front and masking their real focus.

The sheep who will follow those mentioned above simply because they spray claim to be men of god.

Those who think that a person who believes in god must have a good moral compass and those who don't must not. People can be socially just without any belief in god.

So you're saying that because some men took a vow of celibacy and then broke that vow, it corrupts an entire organization even though the vast majority of men who took that vow live their vow faithfully? Hmmmm.....can't see how that makes much sense....well, logically speaking.
I guess it makes sense for someone who is obviously bitter and angry and/or a member of the Progressive faith. Outside of that...not so much.

So you're saying that truth isn't possible?

So you're saying that truth isn't possible?

Who's truth? I'm sure your truth is much different than my truth which is much different than the truth a Muslim feels. I have no issues with your truth or the Muslim truth and hope it serves you well. I just don't want your truth force fed to me. You fall into the group that believes your faith is the only faith which is what you've been taught I just personally have no time for that.

You don't think that the same thing happened with teachers?...lol. It did happen with teachers. It's called "passing the trash".

Sex offenders

Passing the trash

The Catholic church is not the only institution that needs to confront, and deal with, sexual crimes against children

Sex offenders who prey on children go where children are, says Ernie Allen, president of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. They teach in schools, coach sports teams, run scout troops and day-care centres. Charol Shakeshaft, a professor at Hofstra University and the author of a forthcoming book on sexual violence in schools, has found that 15% of pupils are sexually abused by a teacher or staff member between kindergarten and high-school graduation, and that up to 5% of teachers sexually abuse or harass students.

By and large, as Ms Shakeshaft points out, institutions protect the adults and not the children. At worst, fearing legal liability and damage to their reputations (and often prodded by lawyers and insurance companies), they come to a private settlement with the offender. “The first instinct is to get them out of your organisation,” says Mr Allen. As in the case of Mr Fry, the perpetrator is sent away with nothing but praise in the personnel file. Such cases are so common that educators have coined the term “passing the trash”. A 1995 study of 225 cases in which pupils were sexually abused by teachers or other staff members found that in only 1% of the cases did the school-district superintendent attempt to revoke the culprit's teaching licence

Be it a priest, teacher, camp councillor.........whatever.......it's all the same to me. You do that there is no punishment harsh enough. If the organization tried to cover it up.......there is no punishment harsh enough. The problem is people forget that what's important is compassion to the individual and instead place a higher value on protecting their establishment of choice. Does that make all teachers or church members evil? Of course not but those establishments have failed in their duty to protect those children multiple times on multiple level. Be it Penn State or the Catholic church or whatever other group they nearly always got off cheap.

I didnt say that my faith was the only faith. I just happen to believe that it possesses the fullness of truth. There are elements of that same truth in other faiths, in some cases to a very great extent.
But I believe that we can find truth and that faith is the gateway to truth. Besides, what good would faith be if true faith led us to error?
Personally, I would see no value in faith if true faith would lead us away from truth.

I wish you well with your faith and finding your truth. Which elements are contained in the fullness of truth is up to the individual to decide on their journey. Although you didn't say your faith was the only faith verbatim I've read enough of your posts about progressive faith to know you feel that your faith is the only faith.

I do not believe that my faith is the "only" faith. But I do believe that my faith does possess the fullness of truth though.
Again.....there are elements of this same exact truth in other faiths. In some cases, other faiths possess a significant portion of the truth.
In fact, I believe that it is possible to believe in those faiths and achieve salvation. In fact, My faith says as much....doctrinally.

Unlike you, it seems, I do not believe in individual truth. I believe that there is in fact one truth which we can decide to accept or reject. So thank you for wishing me well in finding my truth and please accept my well wishes in the hope that you find "the" truth.

That's pretty much the same thing as saying my way is the only way. Yes other have a few things correct but in the end my truth is the one truth.

When did the Catholic Church abandon the all non Catholics are going to hell motto?

We can agree to disagree on individual truth and again you state there is only one truth, yours. As far as my finding "the" truth I have, my own.

1. Faith may drive people to action, but who cares? Many other things do too, and they are based in reality. I don't need to believe in Santa Claus to give my wife a present for Christmas.

2. (bold) hahahahahaha. You realize that religion is the SOURCE of social injustice right?

3. False. Faith provides zero knowledge by definition, and it is the religious dogma, not faith, that attempts to (but fails) to provide a "meaning" to life. However, as there have been countless religions throughout history, I'd like to avoid delving down that road and rather stick to the topic of faith itself.

Faith means you believe something without reason and to question that (especially in America) is very taboo. People automatically get defensive when the subject is even brought up so one (if they choose to be politically correct) must tip toe around the issue.

Bold: Why? This is a prime example of my question.
What is so special about "faith" that you feel deserves admiration? A child has faith that a Fairy will come in the middle of the night and leave her money for her tooth. Does this deserve admiration?
