I'm pretty sure that would be a throw the TV out the window first round pick for most Patriot fans. If Keenan Allen is on the board then take him.

It really doesn't happen that often. He does pick for needs, just usually prioritizes them differently. But it's very rare that he picks Tavon Wilsons out of nowhere.

Did you watch the combine? This doesn't seem to have any recent or accurate research behind it.

I hate the 'hurr hurr, Belichick does the opposite of what everyone thinks'.

It really doesn't happen that often. He does pick for needs, just usually prioritizes them differently. But it's very rare that he picks Tavon Wilsons out of nowhere.

Mankins, Vollmar, Cunningham, Price, Tate, Wheatley all say hi (and I'm sure i missed some)

Not sure the 4.62 running Johnthan Banks will be going at #13 and Xavier Rhodes at #31 is way out. The CB ranking aren't all that good here I'm afraid.

Mankins and Vollmer were not out of nowhere. Many had Mankins with a first round ranking. Gosselin had Vollmer's as a late 2nd value.

Of course, analysts poster tend to undervalue offensive linemen, except perhaps LT's at the top of the draft. This situation is changes some as guards and RT's are more highly valued.

Wilson was a terrible pick alas. BB was obsessed with safety and whiffed on Casey Hayward. The damage that pick caused extends to this year. Imagine if the Patriots had Hayward; they would not be pulling their hair out trying to solve their CB problems and could instead pick to the strength of the draft--i.e. safety...

41 tackles, 4 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries is not a terrible pick, It's ppl like you who keep guys like Mel Kiper employed, no clue about football and what impact players make so they just write quotes based on the first page of google. Bashing Wilson is old and dumb get off it.

But he could have had Wilson much later in the draft. He could have had an outstanding CB with that pick and waited until this year for an outstanding safety.

You don't eh? One advantage is that Hayward is much less likely to be in jail next season.
Ideally BB would have taken both; CB depth has always been an issue.

You mean like calling Brace a disaster or saying that Haynesworth would not last half the season?

Of course; I was a huge Randy Moss fan and stood up for him when all the douches wanted to get rid of him. Also a huge David Givens fan; he was the most under appreciated player in Patriots history. Loved LeKevin Smith also and a lot of other guys.

As far as criticizing the Wilson pick..I have the right to question that....if you want to be a pollyanna and say everything the Patriots do is perfect go right ahead but don't prevent me for pointing out their screwups.

Interesting to see you proclaiming your love for Hayward and calling it a whiff by the Patriots. You never mentioned him prior, or during the draft, and your first post involving the kid was much less than complimentary, as it was just a bag on Wilson in response to someone who'd mentioned both in the same post:

Yeah, Wilson stunk for most of last year, and he might well turn out to be another blown pick, but let's not act as if you were calling the Hayward kid a budding star.

Many of us are with you re: your love of Givens. It would have been nice to have kept him. The problem with that was that the Titans stepped in and offered him something pretty ridiculous in the form of a 5/25 deal. That would be considered decent money now for a receiver of his importance and talent level, as he was not a WR1 or a WR2. The fact that it would be arguably decent money now tells you how much it was 8 yrs ago!

I agree that Wilson looked out of place many times last year and that we shouldn't feel all that comfortable about him moving forward, but there were also some things he did right and benefitted from. His turnovers were great, and 4 INTs is nothing to laugh at. We'll know much more about him this year, and will be able to tell more about whether those turnovers were more of an "Arrington" type that were lucky or not. He did play both the CB/S roles, and he did produce on some level, so those would be signs for optimism. Hopefully he learns from his rookie mistakes and improves.

Until then, it's probably too early to be bagging on him that much, although I respect the fact that you disagree with him going in the 2nd round, so you're probably right about your gripe there. I am wondering if there's more to that story or not? It has been reported by someone close after the draft that at least one other team was looking at him that high. We'll never know if that is true or not though.

Wilson did very well early in the season. He ended being ahead of a healthy Chung on the depth chart. The patriots don't exactly have a great record with production from rookie defensive backs in the 2nd round and later (Samuel and Wilson were a long time ago).

Last draft was an awful draft for safeties. Perhaps, Wilson should have been a 3rd or 4th. However, that wasn't happening. Two other teams had shown interest and had him on their second round boards, as we did. Positions get "over-drafted" when the supply is so short.

All in all, we needed a backup safety very badly, and Wilson did at least as well as our past rookies.

That being said, Wilson could get beaten out for reps this year by a rookie, or not.
