I agree. I think his price tag should be low right now. Now, whether he would want to sign with New England or would he re-sign with Detroit or a different team remains to be seen.

Patriots: Strong safety Louis Delmas – New England was interested in Delmas leading up to the 2009 draft, but he was picked one spot ahead of where the Pats took Pat Chung. Chung also happens to be a free agent. Delmas has versatility to play both safety spots and he’s a big yet disciplined hitter. Coach Bill Belichick likes those qualities. Delmas does have an injury history, though, so he shouldn’t be too expensive.

I like Chung more than Delmas & I don't like Chung. So I guess I don't like Delmas even more. For cheap, either can be depth.

I have no problem with anyone that Belichick wants to bring in for camp competition. IMHO, Chung is very unlikely to be re-signed. Chung would be a #4 safety for us, even he even made the team.

The issue is whether we spend serious money on a safety. That depends on Belichick's evaluation of Wilson. We already have McCourty, Wilson and Gregory (plus special teamer Ebner as an emergency safety).

Drafting a safety high is also a strong possibility.

Chung was leaving either way

Does anyone know why New England didn't offer Dashon Goldson a contract when he was a free agent two years ago? Price?

I think Chung will sign elsewhere. And I think Belichick will kick the tires on Delmas. Maybe, he signs for a one-year contract.

I'd let Chung walk without signing Delmas.

I believe we did he just chose to stay in San Fran.

Yeah, regardless, Chung is gone. I would rather have other guys than Delmas, but he would be a nice addition.

Would you sign him now? I believe he's a free agent again. But, if San Francisco can't re-sign him, he certainty won't come here.

His price just doubled, and he's a cover safety. Would be kind of duplicitous with McCourty at FS.

Both were horrible last season. No interest in either.

We did but he decided to stay in SF.

I like Delmas as a player. If he could stay healthy and isn't a ****** like the rest of that Detroit team I'd sign him to a prove it deal.

People seem to forget that at the by the en of the 2011 season, Chung was probably our best DB. Now I don't have any explanation of why Chung fell so far that he failed to play even when he was healthy at the end of this past season. I just know that he was a good DB just a year before.

I know Delmas was the Pats first choice in 2009, and he flashed several times over the past 4 years including IIRC, a pro bowl or 2. Like anything this off season, a lot would depend on his price, and the perception BB has of Gregory, Wilson, and the development of Ebner.

The bottom line here is that Delmas is a talented but somehow injury plagued safety. Certainly worth a look, but since we don't really have a clue as to BB's off season DB strategy its really hard to speculate what he'll do and who he'll go after and what he's willing to pay for them.

Chung come back if at all at a minimum deal to play in short yardage/goal line packages.

Delmas is going to be too expensive - I like Moore better at less $. Or draft a S - pretty good draft for them.

Moore unfortunately will likely command more $$ than Delmas. Too bad, because he would be
absolutely perfect here.

Moore - McCourty
Gregory - Wilson
Ebner - UFA/UDFA

Position solved.

no to delmas and chung is walking

Is it possible that BB wants Wilson to start next year? I think so.

Not sure why you say he won't come here?

Personally I think we should be more worried about CB and pass rush than safety. At this point my preference is to leave McCourty at safety and he can pair with Gregory, Wilson, or a rookie and we will be good if the corners are set and possiblely great if the corners are set and we improve the pass rush.

This has been a popular question lately due to the emergence of Goldson as a more dominant player, but you'd need to remember that at the time he was not anything at all special.

We actually reportedly offered him a little more than SF's ridiculously low (but appropriate at the time) offer, he just didn't see much of a difference between the two offers and chose to stay where he was instead, hoping that he could transform staying there into a nice long-term deal with them, which he has set himself up to do with his much better play.

It certainly wasn't like we offered him some ridiculous deal for the kind of player he was at the time. His own team actually offered less. Both offers were very low but were on par with his value at the time.
