The Pats will have a very thin draft, just in terms of sheer numbers, unless they find ways to get more picks. I was wondering what avenues other posters thought might be out there for the Pats to get more.

My first thought was trading the rights to Brian Waters. He hasn't retired, right? And since he didn't report, his second contract year is still on the books. Not that I love the idea of trading him to Houston, but if that's what he wants, we could probably get something for him -- I would think at least a 6. Is that a possibility?

Beyond that, tagging and trading Welker seems like a possibility. Not that I want him to leave, but this is a move the Patriots have done twice before (with Cassel and Tebucky Jones) and it seems possible this year.

I know others have talked about trading Ryan Mallett, but I'm sort of hoping we don't do that -- that's two years of development time we'd be wasting.

Any other thoughts?

re: Mallett—the Patriots had to understand, when drafting him, that there was a possibility he would never start a game during his tenure here, and that would be true of any other QB they drafted/signed in 2011.

Most likely method is the usual. Pats trade #29 for a 2nd and a 3rd, trade one of the 3rds for a 4th and a 6th. That gives them two 2s, one 3rd, one 4th, one 6th, and two 7ths for 7 picks total.

Nothing flashy, but it allows them to take advantage of the depth of this draft and the lack of elite players at the top of it.

The trouble with trading down is that #1 picks usually become better
players than #2 picks who become better players than #3 picks, etc.
Better to stay where you are in the draft and draft the best available player.

In the aggregate that may be true, but in the specific situation where the player you have rated as #29 isn't that much better than the player you have rated as #46, then it's worth it if you can pick up a 3rd rounder with it. From reading this draft forum, it appears most of the folks in-the-know here feel that is how the draft is shaping up this year.

Tons of depth in this year's draft. I would rather have four 2nd round picks than two 1st's this year.

That theory only works when it works, as we saw with the 2009 draft.

Deus Cousin, Predicted Comp picks? Law Firm and Anderson? 3rd and 4th?

The Pats are not getting any compensatory picks.

No comp picks for the Pats this year.

But if Welker, Talib, and/or Vollmer depart....we could be talking about some big comp picks next year. That could be a 3rd, 3rd, and 5th, if the rest of the losing UFA and gaining UFA averaged out.

yeah we could get some nice comp picks for those guys im confident that cannon or zusevics can start for us at right tackle and i think edelman and woodhead/vereen could replace a good amount of welker's production obviously not all of it but enough and then we could draft a CB to replace Talib. Hacing comp picks would be huge so we could use our own draft picks to trade up in the loaded draft next year with Stephon Tuitt, Austin Sefarian Jenkins, Marquise Lee and some other superstar potentials players

Umm yup. We had 4 second round picks and they were all pretty much busts except for Vollmer. Vollmer has been excellent but we might not retain him because of A) pricetag and B) injury history. He's a beast when healthy, but a big health risk. Can we afford to pay 6m+ for a guy who might spend half the season in the tub?

Accumulating more draft picks

2013 seems to be a very deep draft. What do you all think would be the best way to accumulate more quality picks?

Trade down?
Existing roster players with value in trades?
Future draft picks?

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats trade down. A couple of factors involved are whether or not Dennard can play and the confidence the Pats have in Dowling. I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats traded their 1st this year for a 1st next year and a 2nd this year.

Re: Accumulating more draft picks

The word ACCUMULATE seems like wishful thinking...

I mean how do we accumulate draft picks when we don't really have any draft picks. Yes, we could gain a few but accumulation belongs to those who already have 8-9 or more picks.

In past Pat drafts we were not only in position to accumulate draft picks, we also did it. This year is quite different. Boring isn't it... except in our dream states.

Re: Accumulating more draft picks

i think maybe trade our first for a first next year and a third this year then take our 2 thirds and trade into the mid second round and try and get banks (falling), carradine, hankins, wheaton, patton or Greene/Brown

Re: Accumulating more draft picks

At least on trade down seems inevitable. To me, the question is which round we trade out of. Trading down with our first seems the most likely. There will be someone who values #29 enough to give us reasonable compensation to trade down. For example, we could trade down to about #46 and get a mid third. A third could be traded for a 4th, 5th and 6th.

Re: Accumulating more draft picks

I agree with the trade down scenarios. Probably #29 for a couple of lower round picks. If this draft is as deep as everyone says/thinks it is, as long as BB doesn't really covet someone who falls far in round 1 as did Big Vince, there most likely will be a trade down.

Then again, FA signing will most likely determine the tactic that BB uses, and no one here has a clue what that will look like. Do they resign Talib? How about Wes? Vollmer? Does Lloyd get the ax?

Lots of ??? and no answers this early.

To be continued..... ;)
