The Patriots have released FB Spencer Larsen and waived OT Kyle Hix

Anybody have an idea of how much (or little) additional cap space that frees up?

Depends upon who replaces them in the "Top 51".....But Larsen will be a dead money hit of $125k and Hix $3k.

Larsen was a $750k cap hit (along with the dead money hit) and Hix was in the 400's.

Hix basically saves nothing.

Larsen had a salary of $750K, so after accounting for the replacement, it probably frees up about $300K.

I love Slater but it crazy to me that he has the 10th highest cap hit on the team.

According to Jason's page, it is the 13th highest, not 10th. But, yeah, why should an All-Pro Special Team's player have a high cap number..

Questions for peeps who understand the cap. Am I correct in reading that if we cut Dowling we'd save nothing?

That is correct. In fact, it would cost the Pats another 83K if they cut him before June 1st.

Come on man.. I know he is a great ST player but he has a higher hit than McCourty and Dennard combined, Ridley and Vereen combined, Deaderick and Love combined..

That's a high price to pay for ST

Yea makes sense to just let him compete in camp and see if he can not break this time. If he does, they IR him and hes done as a Patriot

It's pretty useless to compare his cap hit to players who are still on their rookie contracts.

Sign the beas...

never mind

Hmm.. Slater is on his 2nd contract. All the other players you mentioned are on their rookie contracts... Funny thing about that...

Seriously, don't stop and think about it. Disregard that Special Teams is a full third of the game...

Huh, I had Hix on my 53. Guess we're gonna draft or bring in a tackle

I'm not disregarding it I said he is a great player but his cap hit is still too high IMO.

Report out of my head indicating Larsen was released to make room for Tebow when he frees up.

Many posters undervalue special teamers (including kickers). This is both in terms of salary and in terms of roster spots. Belichick certainly does not.

Like I said I'm not under valuing anyone. His cap hit is just higher than I'd prefer. I never said to cut him or even restructure him I just was pointing out it was high IMO.

Then compare him with other players not on their rookie contract and see if he is overpriced.

Slater had 19 ST tackles last year so if he duplicates that we'd be paying $119,298.21 per tackle.. That craziness IMO

Twice as high as Ryan Wendell.
Five times as high as Dane Fletcher

Considering we have an extremely young team a lot are on rookie contracts but they aren't exactly all 7th rounders.
