Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap space

The Redskins should have thought about the situation more clearly when they decided to go against the Gentlemen's Agreement a few seasons back.

Semi-OT:Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap space

How much cap space did the Skins dump compared to everyone else? Was there an unwritten # that they crossed?

Snyder had no problem colluding against the players, but he's pissed off because the teams' collusion is now being used against him.

Snyder can go pound sand.

They really didn't think the league was going to come down on them like they did last year. It really hampered their FA spending. They are an up and coming team that feels they are a few key upgrades away from being a serious contender.
This is a power play to squeeze out of a second year of severe cap restrictions.
The timing is likely in retaliation for the league hitting them with the cap sanctions on the verge of last year's FA market.

Snyder is such a team player with the other owners

Maybe the Redskins should sue themselves for giving Albert Haynesworth that ridiculous contract during the uncapped year. The league should argue in court that the Redskins weren't penalized for spending so much during the uncapped year, but because they spend so much so foolishly during the uncapped year.

The REDSKINS are an "up and coming team"?????? :D :D :D

Please.

They are a mess.

They have no first round picks until 2015 - - they used them up on a QB whom they just ruined.

Let's see now.......no cap space.....no first round picks until 2015..... You do the math.

Snyder's only hope not to further embarrass himself is to sue the NFL into nonexistence.

Not taking any sides here, but if it is called an UNCAPPED year... why would you be punished for spending too much in that year? That's very unintuitive.

Not at all upset that Washington/Dallas are getting the shaft, but they kind of have a right to complain for spending 'transgressions' committed in an 'uncapped' year. Did Goodell go over the line or is he just the mouthpiece of the other 30 owners with his ruling?

Re: Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap spac

The Redskins are basically screwed and they probably know it. That's what happens when you trade the farm for a single player who you then allow to play on a torn ACL. Barring a series of draft hits (which, let's be honest, isn't going to happen with their FO), they're looking like they've already peaked as a borderline playoff team, since they lack both draft picks and cap space going forward, and they don't have a lot of young, healthy, highly talented players.

They need their cap space back because improving via the draft isn't a likely option. The real question, IMO, is why a team that knew it had no cap space to be a FA player for several years would then go and trade all of its draft picks away. Just poor management.

Re: Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap spac

For the first and probably also the last time in my life, I think Dan Snyder is in the right.

Re: Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap spac

that franchise is a joke

I stand by my assessment. I'm not a fan, but here in Northern VA, I hear lots about them on the local sports shows.
1st - they won the NFC East
2nd They had the #5 offense in the league with a rookie QB and a thin WR Corp beyond Garçon who missed multiple games last season.
3rd RGIII was mishandled, but there is no evidence that he's ruined.
4th They lost 2 of their best D players early in the season and still won the NFC East
5th They have a very solid running game

Do they have multiple needs? Absolutely. Are they lacking draft picks? Absolutely.
But they have a Franchise QB and a capable backup.
Will they be able to go deeper in the playoffs without the cap space that was taken away by the league? Unlikely, but I think the leak that they were contemplating the suit was saber rattling to force a settlement with the league to get back some of the lost cap room.
If they get some cap relief, they may be able to plug some holes.

If they get a little cap relief, they would be able to

Re: Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap spac

  • get an experienced coach with a winning track record - check
  • get the owner out of personnel decisions - check
  • get a franchise quarterback with strong character and a charismatic personality - check
  • win the division - check
  • recapture the local sports fan base so the Nationals don't run away with it - check
  • find a way to continue to strengthen the team - TBD

The league warned every team before free agency that year that there could be repercussions for spending like a drunken sailor in the uncapped year when a new CBA was signed. So Snyder was warned that something like this may happen. That is why only a handful of teams were penalized with only Dallas and Washington getting huge fines.

Big deal. I live in Montgomery County and hear the same sports shows. The difference between me and you is that I know who OWNS those "local sports shows". Google: Red Zebra Broadcasting. It'll be an eye opening experience.

The Redskins had one breakout year. They have little or no cap space and no first rounders until 2015. What do you think their running quarterback will look like after the pounding and surgeries this season? He's not Brady - - he has a great arm but 50% of his game is about exceptional mobility. He's a great kid and a tremendous talent - - his tragedy is that he was selected by the most dysfunctional NFL organization with a head coach who will hit pedal to the metal immediately in order to save his job in the short term.

What that organization did to that kid should be illegal. It says everything one needs to know about that franchise. He's too good for them and now they've ruined him - - and will do it again this year. People wonder what Bobby Orr would have been like if he could have had his knees for more than 6 years. People will wonder what RGIII could have done if he had his for more than 4.

The NFC East won't lay down and die for them again this year. Last place, and the fire Snyder petitions will be back after the one year hiatus.

Hmmm. funny you bring up the Nationals.

Want to compare how they handled Strasbourg versus how the Redskins handled RG III? Both teams went one and done in the playoffs last year.

Wanna make a bet which team is in better shape for the next decade?

The Skins are the New York Jets of the NFC - - circa 2010. They went all in for last year, used up their 1st rounders until 2015, have little or no cap space and are now holding fingers crossed on RG III. They are toast. This is the reason why Snyder is contemplating the Nuclear Option.

I'm going to drop a little wisdom on you: Only desperate people pull the pins out of grenades.

because they used boredline illegal tactics they front loaded contracts and in order to get players longterm for pennies on the dollar. They used the uncapped year as a way to offset spending when the cap came back. The NHL removed the ability to have extreamly long contracts for the same reason.

Those 10-15 year deals where the player gets a lot early, and then vet minimum at the end in order to have an average cap hit below market value.

Re: Dan Snyder and Washington Redskins considering nuclear option to restore cap spac

Shmessy,
You assume that I don't know who owns the local sports shows. I do.
You seem to think I've drunk the koolaid, but I don't agree.

I agree that they badly mishandled RGIII.

What neither you nor I can say is if RGIII will be damaged to the point of being ineffective until he is back from the injury.
