PFT stirs pot regarding brady deal

Florio should stick to breaking stories about Gronk after Rosenhaus feeds him the information.

Florio more than implies Pats "cheating". What's sad is that he cites what Elway and the Broncs did cheating the cap for 2 rings and all you read from fans below is Spygate.
Krafts tepid response to the furor over camera placement allowed his brand to be tarnished forever.

It's really pretty simple.

(1) Brady is entering the final stages of his career.

(2) He wants to win another ring desperately.

(3) He knows that the Patriots need the extra cap space to improve the team and give him the best chance to win.

(4) He has made more than a hundred million dollars playing football already, and his wife is almost a *billionaire*. In other words, he doesn't need the money.

It's not that difficult to figure out what's going on here. Maybe we'll all be made out to be fools if it turns out the Patriots are doing something underhanded, but maybe it really is this simple.

Florio will ALWAYS go out of his way to cast aspersions on the Pats when he can. He's a die hard Steeler fan, who has never forgiven the Pats for beating his team at home in 2 AFCCG's. That's why he never lets an opportunity, regardless of how feckless, to bring up a spy-gate reference, or anything else negative about the Pats. It really pisses me off, but when you think about it, it isn't really out of the ordinary behavior for a rabid Steeler fan.

What's more telling about Florio's character is his habit of deleting ANY comment on an article that even hints at a criticisms of something he's posted. ANYTHING I've ever posted there that criticizes him even tangentially, has never lasted a half hour. Pretty thin skinned if you ask me. ;)

He's a coward.

Silly.

Try to articulate the supposed "side deal" and it falls apart.

There are two possibilities:

1) The Patriots have agreed to pay Brady more money under the table and keep it secret. I would think this would be met with about the harshest penalty imaginable in the NFL and also would possibility be a felony. It's not credible.

2) In 2015, Brady will sign a new contract, recouping the money he gave up in this deal. Again, silly. Won't happen. Do people seriously think the Patriots are going to extend him at age 41 and pay him the $59 million under market value this contract is for? I think the league might well take notice if that happened.

For years, in every sport, people have said, "why doesn't [x player] just stay in a good situation for less money"? A player finally does it and everyone is surprised.

If you were going to pick one player in the world who might do it, this is the guy. He can afford it, and it's within his M.O.

Now, in some senses, it's somewhat uncompetitive. The reality is that players make so much money that they can defeat the idea of salary caps by taking under market to give their teams a competitive advantage. This idea is not new. The Lakers tried to do it several years ago when Karl Malone and Gary Peyton and others all went there for under market to try to get a championship. But by and large it hasn't happened much because, at the end of the day, it's easy to talk and not so easy to walk the walk -- especially when you have agents involved who get a cut. I wonder what Brady and his agent have discussed about this -- surely the agent isn't happy, but Brady can make it up to him easily.

To be honest Brady taking that extension is amazing to me. I love that he did it and that he is in a position to do so.

I can't think of a fan of another team in the league that is not boiling with pure jealousy this morning. They've all probably seen restructuring but nothing like this.

Good thoughts.
I take exception only with your conclusion. Brady's agent's job is to service his client for which he is paid handsomely. It's not Brady's responsibility to modify his desires to please his agent. The agent is the employee.

He's a slimy horrible little man. I wonder if its actionable.

I dont know why anyone reads Florio.

I thought he sucked even before his anti-Patriot ways came to light. Long before he was ever on NBC too.

The guy made his bones recycling other peoples work and making crap up. Now that he is bigger he does have some better sources but his real skill has always been taking local writers work and giving them a national place to put it thus they feed him stuff so he links to them and he never has to do anywork to seem like he is connected everywhere.

Also he is an ex lawyer but whenever there is anything law related and you would think he would be good to turn too he is as clueless as anyone.

Jeezus, Florio writes the way teenage girls talk. "Well, somebody said they heard they somebody say ..." Barely a step up from "I could say something but I won't."

LOL! So last night he was trying to tell us that Brady didn't take a penny less, and today the deal is so good for the Pats that it's cheating! Good one, Florio.

All the hand-wringing over why he left money on the table is asinine. He's taken less his whole career, for starters. On top of that, are we seriously talking about what Kraft would have to do to sweeten the deal for Brady?? As if there's some side deal?!? ROFLMAO. As if Tom Brady needs the money. The only reason he didn't take as sizable a discount the last time around was b/c of his obligations to the NFLPA and feeling the need to set the bar for QBs. Does anyone really think Brady and Giselle are sitting around counting their pennies?

Good lord. The two just built a MFing moat in front of their mansion and are buying a second mega-home back east, I don't think they need anyone to throw in deal sweeteners. How is it hard to get that money is not an issue for Brady and his wife?

The guy took a hometown discount. He did so because he likes the team, wants to win, and simply doesn't need the money. End of story, there's nothing else going on here.

Man, some people are stupid. And it's amazing those people are considered authorities.

Taking Florio's bias out of it, we live in a sports world where fans are cynical and skeptical of everyone. Steroids in baseball started off as just a few "obvious" offenders, but quickly started spreading to players everyone assumed were clean and above that kind of thing. I think the modern sports fan has a hard time believing an athlete can do an unselfish thing that doesn't have a long term financial benefit, and Florio is playing to that audience.

Hahaha couldn't say it better.

The guy has a moat he is not taking under the table money that he could just get legitimately if he wanted.

The guy has a moat keeping Wes apparently is more important than turning his moat into a lazy river or paying the black night to cross the draw bridge with you everytime you enter and leave.

now he is back with this saying he has the break down from a "source' with knowledge of the contract that Brady actually isn't taking less money, he is getting more

Two or three years ago, he wrote an article about Belichick giving Chad Eaton some extra money to start training camp fights when they were both in Cleveland. He went on to point out the potential salary cap violations (the amount Eaton received was never mentioned) and the implications of a 15 year old story.

At the end, he wrote something like "Things like this are pretty common throughout the league and it's history, but I'm making a big deal out of because it involves Belichick and the Patriots."

I didn't believe you, so I looked it up. You were right on.

It’s highly unlikely that anything will come of this, given that Eaton is talking about things that happened more than 15 years ago. But any hint of a potential rules violation by the Patriots and/or Belichick is sure to get PFT Planet’s juices flowing on a fairly slow Friday morning, regardless of whether any, some, or all of the other 31 coaches were doing the same thing.

Because the site is an excellent place to go when you want football information

He's a smarmy little turd who makes his bones passing on info, but makes himself happy by trying to impose his brand of morality on others. Read him for the information. Mock him for his opinions.

You're right. Despite my low opinion of Florio's editorial opinions and the way he personally plays favorites (like he did with the Saints), I am a regular visitor to the site because despite Florio, its a convenient place to get an quick overview of the day's NFL news.

I don't mind so much when we disagree, but I do mind that he's so thin skinned or cowardly that he can't take a little criticism on his more egregious opinions.
