an extra 7 mill can go a long way

More King:

In an important free agency period, when New England will be fighting to stay relevant and win its first Super Bowl since the 2004 season, they should have the financial ammunition to fortify the team. They could bolster the pass rush by signing free agent Dwight Freeney of the Colts, or the secondary by signing veteran safety Ed Reed, also a free agent. On offense, they could open the wallet to re-sign Brady's favorite receiver, Wes Welker, or maybe aim higher for a younger franchise receiver like Mike Wallace of the Steelers. All of a sudden, New England will have an additional $15 million of cap freedom while two-thirds of the teams in the league struggle to do anything in free agency because they're so snug to the cap.

Re: King: Brady signs contract to make him "Patriot for life"

3 year 27 mill for a guy like brady? YES PLEASE How much $$ does that free up this year?

BTW your signature of Jack Edwards is perfect for this post.

I'm having a Jack Edwards moment. Anyone else?

A little something different, along the same lines, in your honor:

Suddenly the rumored Welker contract doesn't hurt those who were opposed to it so much, I'm assuming.

Pure speculation on my part, but I can't help but wonder if Brady agreed to the deal contingent on the Pats re-signing his favorite receiver.

I'd be shocked if Welker doesn't re-up now. Would Brady have taken this big a hometown discount without his BFF being back on board?

This deal seems so sweet for the Pats, I'm sure we'll hear someone (NFLPA?) complain about it.

Solid move by Brady. I'm sure your wife's billion dollar fortune never hurts the calculus :)

Would like to see the team reciprocate now by tying up Welker and grabbing another WR or two in the draft/FA.

I'm with you and jmt on this. I've got to think this guarantees Welker stays, and it probably keeps one or both of the Talib/Vollmer duo around as well.

TFB....... the gift that keeps giving.

Re: King: Brady signs contract to make him "Patriot for life"

Bill better load the team up this year.

Wondering the exact same thing...

Amen....

Bring us Welker!
Bring us our safety!
Bring us our WR!

And Bring us the head of Alfredo Garcia!

Brady is the ******ing man!!!

We have 30 million in cap room, lmao!

Let's have Brady's career start on a dynasty and end on a dynasty!

Re: Breaking: Brady restructures? per King

Saves us 7 million in cap space this year and next year.

Wow.

Big free agency period coming up.

EDIT:
don beat me to it.

Also LOL. Jets, Steelers, Ravens, Giants all in cap hell. Even the Packers are moderately strapped and Niners have a ton of big contracts coming up.

Besides Bengals, Patriots are I'm pretty sure the only playoff team with cap space.

I wonder if this was done with the nod "I'm giving you space, you have to use it it on Welker".
EDIT2:
Just looking at that... We're getting MVP, top 3 calibre QB for 5 more years for about 14 million per year.
Meanwhile Joe Flacco is asking for 7 years 140 million. LOL

I don't talk to Brady personally, but I guarantee you that was the expectation. There's probably an expectation to spend on the defensive side of the ball as well. Very hard not to like this one. Hopefully Brady doesn't decline before this contract is up and can retire on top.

Jets/Bills/Dolphins boards should be interesting reads tonight. :singing:

Best part is that no other Pat has the right to be insulted by a below-market offer. They may not accept it, but they have no right to get offended; they should accept or not as they think best.

That starts with Welker. Welker could still say to Tom, "Buddy, my career earnings are only a small fraction of yours, so I have to go for top dollar. Sorry." But he has to at least think about taking a below-market offer ...

... and that's even before we figure Wes' offer will get a lot closer to market than it otherwise would have been due to money coming straight from Brady's pocket.

If Melton isn't franchised by the Bears, you know what the fahk to do BB!

Re: King: Brady signs contract to make him "Patriot for life"

Looks like I found my new signature text; from king:

For the second time in his illustrious career, Brady is doing something players in this day and age simply do not do: As he did in 2005, Brady, a league source told SI.com, is signing a contract with New England that will pay him significantly less money than the market will bear, in large part to help the Patriots stay competitive for the next five seasons.

We are lucky to have Brady and his agent.

Neither greedy like Revis.
