Wes Welker at 8 million per year for 5 years?

I will be horrified if that deal happens.

Anything more than two years is way too long.

Unless there's an escape hatch, that would be a terrible move.

If true, this proves that tampering is alive and well in today's NFL. There's no way the Pats agree to those terms with Welker unless it's been made clear that another team is willing to offer the same.

The numbers and years mean little without the guarantee amounts, so there's no way of knowing whether this would be a good deal, or bad deal, for either side.

I am not sure why so many of you think this is a bad deal. It doesn't even put him in the top 10 of average WR salaries this year. Obviously the Pats FO will have an out on or about year 3, but in a nutshell, I think this is a good deal to tie up Welker in NE until he retires.

Why don't we wait till the deal specifics are on the table before we all cry about it. He made 9.5 last year due to the FT and if the FO franchizes him again, he is due 11.5. Do you all think 8 Mil a year is too much for Wes Welker?

The Patriots valued him at 2 years 8 million a year ago.

Giving him 5 years 8 million a year later is completely absurd, terrible negotiating, and way too big a commitment to a guy who takes the abuse he does every game at the age he is at.

welker at 8 mil for 5 years?

Sounds about right if its 8/9/8/7/8

Cut him after 3 if necessary, ~20 guaranteed if my math is right

How can you make that conclusion without getting the finer points of the deal?

it could mean he's real easy to cut in year three? we just don't know.

$8MM/yr is the upper limit for me, but DI is right, none of the numbers we are going to see thrown out there will mean anything until we see the structure of the deal. Even when a deal is announced (whether its here or elsewhere) it won't mean much until we see, what's guaranteed, what are the cap hits, and when can the deal be abrogated.

My concern with Welker has never been about his production, but his potential for slippage. So any deal that pays him top dollar for top production, I'm all in favor of. I just don't want to be looking at the last 2 or 3 years of a big money deal when or if, Welker hits the wall.

I could see giving him a 5 year deal to spread out the bonus money. I could see paying him a 12MM signing bonus and guarantee another 5MM over the course of the contract. But I also want to be able to get out of the deal with little cap consequence in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years if the production no longer matches the money.

Now the agent can brag about his 5 year deal for $40MM when the reality is that it could be a 2 year deal for $17MM I think that's a deal that should satisfy both sides a give Welker a reasonable $5MM cap number this season.

Maybe I am just being naive here, but I can not fathom a situation where the Pats FO isn't going to cover their bets with him. I am making an assumption that they have an out lined up after the second year or so and that the way the deal is structured will be beneficial to the Pats and not Welker specifically.

We all know we don't pay our players what they are really worth in most cases and I think Welker would be mediocre anywhere else as he is a system WR (Specifically..OUR SYSTEM), but he is also TB12s security blanket and he has done a lot for us over the years(dropped a few clutch passes too). I just don't see this as a bad deal knowing the history of the Pats organization and their negotiating skills.

Now, if this is a straight up 5 year, 8 Mil per year deal at his age, and will all the hits he takes like that, not good...do any of you think our FO is that dumb though?

Have a little faith, they aren't going to screw themselves over knowing there are only 5 other good FAs out there in Greg Jennings, Mike Wallace, Dwayne Bowe, Danny Amendola, and Brian Hartline.

Hell, we may even end up with one of those WRs. Lets not forget, we also have a 100% Jake Ballard under contract this year which means more than likely, Hernandez will be playing WR or at least used in a WR role nearly 100% of the time.

the only way this works is if none of its guarenteed.

5 year deal for a 32 year old wide receiver, that doesn't sound like a patriot contract. thats something the jets would do.

I honestly think that that weird deal (how often does anyone in the NFL get a multi-year offer that is 100% guaranteed?) was not meant as disrespect, but simply "We have no idea what we should do here, so let's kick the can down the road a bit."

Five years gets WW to 2017. Gronk's contract explodes to the upside in 2018 from a $6-8 mill ave to $11-12 mill the final 2 years. AHern's numbers are more evenly spread out at $6-8 mill thru out.
Lot of long term coin being thrown at one grouping. Factor in Brady......about $40 mill/ year for 4 guys....Too much??

If true, Brady has his favorite 3 targets for the rest of his career.

The $8 Million @ 5 years is a figure proposed by Ian Rapaport that "in my mind" would be enough to get a deal. There is no inside information concerning the terms of the contract.

Somebody needs to make a Cap Calculator where you can plug in years, dollars, signing bonus to at least get a rough idead of the Cap hits per year. I know it wouldn't be perfect with workout bonuses and esculators but you could at least be in the ball park.

Deals like this are not strange to me and I think TB has had some say in this. I also think that they are planning to keep TB's favorite targets around untill he is ready to retire. There would obviously be an out clause and that deal would allow the Pats to contend for hte next 5 years and allow the FO to prepare to "reload" after TBs retirement
