Watching NFL Network and hearing these former coaches and GM's talk, I can't help thinking that the Pats should have played Mallet a little bit more IE the Rams game. He is a much better QB than anyone at the combine this week.

Geno Smith who knows? Barkley keep hearing below average arm strength.

There are teams that need a QB and Mallet I think would have gotten the Pats maybe a 1st rounder at worst a early 2nd.

I saw a report from Mayock that the Pats are really high on Mallett. Maybe they don't want to showcase him. Maybe they genuinely want him as the future franchise QB.

maybe its the opposite of a mistake maybe it was so teams didn't make offers to the pats they couldnt refuse on a player they think could be the future QB

Why does everyone want to get rid of Mallett. Wouldn't be good to have a backup QB that BB seems to have confidence in? I know, you want to bring back Matt Cassell, or Brian Hoyer.

We don't know how good or bad Mallett might be but apparently the coach thinks he has some value to the Pats.

I think the Pats should keep him.

It basically boils down to two possibilities:

1. The Patriots expect Brady WILL be their starting QB in 2015 and beyond. In that case, keeping Mallett doesn't make a ton of sense, since there's no way, other than injury to Brady, that he'll be the starter, and his contract runs out in 2014.

2. The Patriots expect Brady WILL NOT be their starting QB in 2015 and beyond. In that case, keeping Mallett makes a lot of sense, although they'll have to pay him more than vet minimum to keep him around.

Those who want to trade Mallett believe (1) is the case; those who want the Pats to hold on to Mallett likely favor (2).

i never said i wanted to get rid of mallett i said maybe we didnt play him so that he wouldnt show his talent and then another team would see his talent and offer a good deal for him. i dont know why you think i want to get rid of him

Because most posters assume that Tommy will be the QB until 2020. They dramatically undervalue the possibility of Mallett being developed as Brady's successor. Even if Brady is better at 38 than Mallett is at 26, if the Pats view Mallett has being a long-term answer, they would be wise to invest their money in him at that time. Contrary to what many here believe, QB's like Mallett do not grow on trees and he may cause BB to make a tough decision in a couple of years.

... QB's like Mallett do not grow on trees and he may cause BB to make a tough decision in a couple of years.

Please explain because, historically, QBs like Mallett pretty much have grown on trees.

First, you're assuming Mallett would have played well enough to lure teams into wanting to give up a high pick for him.

Second, even if a team wants him, I assume they would already expect it would take a high pick, or else why would the Pats make the trade?

We've invested two years into Mallett. He has two years left under contract. Our starting QB is great but he's getting old. The only other QB on the roster is Mike Kafka. If the Pats are willing to let him go for a 4th round pick or lower, why would a team want him? Wouldn't that be a huge red flag?

And no, if Mallett's value isn't at that high level already, I don't for one second think a few nice throws made in mop up duty would move him up as high as you want. If he had made a few starts and looked good, that's different.

Mallet is a nobody. If he was any good, he'd have started. I'm serious.

When a team has a real franchise QB, they WILL go with him. That's it. No questions asked.

It's very very very unlikely the Pats are grooming him over FOUR years. At best Mallet is Matt Cassel part 2.

EDIT: The famous exception is Steve Young, who backed up Joe Montana for seven years! I suppose it's a possibility, but Steve Young shone even from the start. Mallet? Not so much.

Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers say hello too.

Illogical at best. So anyone who can not beat out Tom Brady is a nobody. That is what you are arguing. And that is an absurd statement as on most QBs that have made the Hall of Fame can not beat Brady out in the Patriots' system. And most of them are not nobodies.

Your statement is also absurd with Aaron Rodgers --- if he was any good, he would have beaten out Brett Favre by the end of year 2 instead of sitting on the bench and getting "groomed"

A logical statement is "Most 3rd round quarterbacks never amount to much despite their tools, so hold your horses...."

The Rodgers scenario is the best-case scenario for the Patriots, and Mallett --- a logical statmenet would be that the Rodgers scenario is a low probability event.

Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers say hello too.

Bad example, both 1st round picks and everyone knew they would be starters.

I would trade a back-up QB for a potential 1st or 2nd round draft pick. I could have a guy sit on the bench or possibly draft the next Gronk with the draft pick the Pats pick-up in a trade.

If Mallett is the QB of the future then I wouldn't trade him, but if he is not then hello trade.

Yeah, you know, 5 star recruit QB's that dominate in the SEC, are sons of coaches and have elite arm talent. Those guys don't grow on trees. Or are you one of the fools that thinks the Pats can turn any scrub into a franchise QB whenever they want? I hope Mallett continues to develop, because it makes the most sense for the franchise to have him take over in 2 years and be the QB for the next decade, rather than squeeze another year or two out of a 38 year old Brady, even if Brady is still playing at a high level.

The response is spot on. Look at his post that I was replying too. If they were any good they'd have started. Period. He said it not me.

Young was the arguably the most dominant QB in NCAA history and was a marquee player in the USFL. Rather unique circumstances.

Dominate? How many SEC titles did he lead his team to?

He's an inconsistent, big-armed, slow-reading, struggles-under-pressure, statuesque QB who's looked lousy in limited action. You can buy them at the grocery story for a dime a dozen. He was a third round pick in a year where Blaine Gabbert was picked in the first.

What does SEC titles have to do with a prospects rating? Greg McElroy has one, John Parker Wilson has one, Chris Leak and Matt Mauck have won them recently. Not comparing him to either Manning. But, they never won an SEC Title either. You can find SEC title winning qb's at the Salvation Army.

:noidea:

I wasn't the one claiming he dominated in the SEC, so you can take it up with that poster. I was just responding to a claim that, in the big picture, was pretty irrelevant in the first place, since success in college doesn't mean success in the NFL.
