Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson checked in 6-foot-1 7/8 and 216 pounds at Friday's Combine weigh-in.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 205 by the Volunteers, Patterson is an inch-and-an-eighth shorter than his college listing, but 11 pounds heavier. He's a 6-foot-2, 216-pound beast. The single most dynamic skill-position player eligible for the 2013 draft, Patterson's forty time could be a key indicator of his draft position. This is why I really hate combine week. It's all about track and field measurables and spin. Hopefully Bill is just there to gather additional information on players he's already interested in based on scouting reports and game film and probing their football intellect via initia interviews and gathering up their medical data.

And yet the combine/pro day is fundamental to how BB and the Pats grade prospects.

Patterson is a really intriguing prospect, but if he blows the scouts away on his 40 time, then there's no way we're going to be able to get him in the second round (where we, IMO, should be targeting a WR).

Is it really? I don't think so. I think they get enchanted every now and again, I remember Bill waxing poetic about how you can't coach speed when he drafted CJ...and it was true! I think they may take a closer look at guys they overlooked or recheck the reports on guys who underwhelm. But by and large their board is based on scouting and film. Film is what he went back to on Brady because measurables and concensus scouting sure weren't cutting it. Bill said a long time ago that the combine focus on track and field like measurables in shorts and tshirts and the amount of training athletes were putting in to it as opposed to working on football activities was a detriment to them and even to teams. He's there as much for the face to face opportunities and medicals as anything. They may have their interest piqued in someone they didn't scout much, perhaps an underclassman, or find themselves questioning someone they did. But like the hype it creates good teams usually end up going back to their own scouting and what the film tells them about how a player performs in pads.

Check out the combine times of all the WR's and CB's we've drafted in the 3-cone and 10 yd split. Also the vertical leap of the OL we've drafted. They're not getting drafted on film alone. Either that or there's a massive coincidence.

If you pick up Patterson: Edelman-Lloyd-Patterson

Which does sound better than: Austin-Lloyd-DHB

Either way, without Welker, you gotta count on one of your new guys to be an instant hit.

With a great crop of WRs this year, I'm not worried about a specific one. I just want to see the Patriots move up in round 2 and take their pick.

The workout portion isn't of any value without the tape but if you have two prospect who you have with the same grade and one tests better in every measurable it would be foolish not to move him ahead of the other prospect.....right until you get to the interview and find one guy a knucklehead. Patterson would very well test very well but I'd rather have Allen assuming the interviews go well. It's too bad in some regards he's not working out but maybe it will allow him to slip to us.

We've gone the weed and drilling a cop prospect. We need someone to declare he's never going to play in the NFL and wants to play in Russia. KFL. That will surely drop his status.
