Some interesting tidbits. Said BB made him the man/player he is today. Like he was benched in 2006 before he went on his several pick tear beginning against Cutler. Once told Bill to trade him if he was going to play Hobbs, Brown and a JAG ahead of him... Recalled how Wes said he chased the money instead of championships back in 2008...Said his advice to Wes now would be chase the money, bro.

Why does any of that matter?

What matters is what the guy does from 1pm to 4pm on a Sunday and Asante was a pretty solid corner for us. The price just wasn't right.

Why? He helped bring this team more rings than Welker ever did. I will always appreciate Samuel's efforts for that. He deserved the big pay day, I only wish it was with the Patriots. But that's a whole different beast.

That said, I would take "Oops" Samuel back, and am definitely in the "Keep Wes" camp. Obviously this is pure speculation on my part, but I really don't believe Welker will demand Megatron/Fitzgerald money to come back. If he does, I'm OK seeing him get that elsewhere. I'm guessing that the number of years are in some ways the more difficult consideration for both the Pats and Wes. I just really hope they find a way to get this done, but the Pats' history in this situation leads me to believe he is going someplace else. "Oops" indeed

It's a completely true statement. People are entitled to rank Patriots as they see fit. In my mind, I'll always take Samuel over Welker. I could say the same thing to you. How do you expect anyone to take you seriously for liking Welker more than Samuel?

There's no guarantee that some other team is going to be willing to pay Welker more than the Patriots, and it's worth noting that Samuel made similar comments in 2010 before the New England made Vince Wilfork the highest paid nose tackle in the NFL.


“I don’t think (the Patriots) care about you,” he said. “They didn’t care about me. So do what’s best for you and your family. The way they treat people is not something I agree with.”​

Two thoughts come to mind. First, why is it that Asante Samuel feels so compelled to offer unsolicited advice in regards to contract negotiations? Is he some certified financial planner, that knows better than anyone else in regards to money matters? A psychologist that knows better than anyone else in regards to what the priorities and motivations are of each and everyone else?

Secondly, just because a team/company/organization offers you or anyone else less than what some other team/company organization does, that does not equate to one caring about you, and the other not caring about you. The NFL has a salary cap, and the team felt they were better off using that scarce resource elsewhere. Does he really believe that each and every team should give each and every player whatever salary they so desire, and match or beat each and every competitive offer?

It doesn't work that way in any business, whether it be the NFL or elsewhere.

To me it seems like Asante is taking a subtle jab at Wes. Calling him out for being a hypocrite if gets the money, or possibly saying, "I told you so."

Patriots have won 0 SBs with top notch WRs and TEs but mediocre at best DBs............hmmmmmmmmm

You do realize the league was a different place back then, right? And it'd be one thing if we'd wallowed in mediocrity since but we've been to the show twice since then. If anything, all this does is illustrate how difficult it is to win SBs consistently due to the vagaries of the game.

Bingo. In the old/real NFL, average corners used to rely on disrupting the timing of routes. Now, because cornerbacks are allowed no physicality nowadays, you need a premium skillset just to be competitive in coverage.

When did they outlaw contact within 5 yards of scrimmage? Seattle's big corners will hate this. All the more reason to sign Welker now that CBs can't try to knock him off the LOS.
