I like Vollmer as a player, great to have a versatile player who can play left and right tackle well but, I think this team can replace him fairly easily. Dante is probably the best offensive line coach in the league and develops good linemen like they're coming out of style. Vollmer is injury prone and I didn't think they were too much worse without him. I'd rather spend the money on a wide receiver or a corner/safety. What do you guys think?

I think Dante can coach the guys up in the regular season, but eventually talent or lack there of shows, usually in the playoffs when they get overpowered often in recent years.

Vollmer when healthy is an elite right tackle, he's never healthy though so we should move on and draft a tackle in the 2nd round, not something I want to do given all the holes on this team.

And when Nate Solder gets injured for the season week one next year...?

The above statement is why I think Vollmer is so important to us. He's arguably the best RT in the NFL but he's a better than average LT too. I think Cannon is excellent cover but I'm not convinced he can hold down a Tackle position as a starter.

The question for me is this: Can the Pats find a cheaper alternative that, with coaching from Dante, can perform at a similar level as Vollmer?

Do you mean in the draft or FA?

If you are thinking the draft, there are two potentially outstanding, albeit fairly raw examples in Terron Armstead or Menelik Watson. They're both extremely athletic but Armstead is a small schooler (Arkansas Pine-Bluff) and Watson is a Brit, Juco transfer and has only been playing RT for a year at FSU.

So yes, those options are there but would necessitate a draft pick being used that could be used elsewhere.

What if Vollmer's back acts up again and he misses the season? I'm not hating on him. He's a very good player and would love to have him back. But, I feel the team would be better off spending that money elsewhere if Vollmer is going to command top dollar which he is capable of doing. If they were able to bring in a guy like William Moore or if they could sign both Wes Welker and Greg Jennings. I feel like we'd have a better team than one of those and Vollmer.

His back is clearly a concern but we have no idea what the medical staff think about it. My feeling is that Vollmer is both an ideal lineman for our system and an ideal Patriot and I have this suspicion, which I can't back up, that of the big three FA's, Vollmer's the one BB will want back the most.

Hopefully it's not a problem weather pats bring him back or not. Seabass seems like a good dude. Free agency can't come soon enough, will be interesting to see what the pats do.

I was thinking more in free agency. I'd like for them to continue to use draft picks on defense and maybe a WR.

Yawn. Camp battle between Cannon/Zusevics. Winner gets the job. Let Dante do his magic.

OK. Don't know enough about who fits well from FA. But I love those two prospects I mentioned so I'd love either of them in the draft.

Not worth paying left-tackle money to a right-tackle with injury issues.

Who says Vollmer will command LT money?

Many people regard him to be an above average or better LT. And in fact many people figured he would be the guy to replace Matt Light.

It is not unreasonable to think some team will want him to be there LT.

It's not unreasonable to think that given a number of teams in the NFL have shown themselves to be chronically incapable of making sound personnel decisions.

It is unreasonable, though, to some extent because every other team is no doubt aware of his injury issues, and the Patriots may benefit by a glut in the OT market this offseason.

Or maybe teams will be scared off by his serious back issues and he won't have a big market. No one knows for sure right now how much money he'll command.

the guy made all pro a few years ago as a RT he's by far the best RT in the NFL the good thing is he dose play RT so it wont take brake the bank money to re-sign him but 6 or 7 million yes he's worth it because he protects Brady,

the pats dont have a ton of Draft picks this year i dont want them useing the picks they do have trying to replace good players with rookies they need to Draft DB's and DL with there picks they are not going to sign any big name DB's in FA because it takes 10 million to get a good DB in todays NFL so they need the Draft picks

The issue is that there's a real possibility someone will pay him big $ to play left tackle

Think that he is worth top tier RT money but not top tier LT money..

It takes 1 idiot team with a desperate GM to take him away from us.

If it works out he looks like a genius, if it doesn't he gets fired and his successor gets to deal with the cap consequences.
