Does anyone know why these guys seem to have fallen off the charts? I was looking at some mocks from last spring and I've seen several mocks that had both of these guys in round one (some in the top 10). Injuries or did their play fall off?

One reason that players "slide" is the influx of Juniors who declare. Which mock drafts done after the NFL Draft don't take into consideration.

Other things that happen includes:
The player not getting better or worse while others do get better.
Off-field issues such as arrests, drugs, dui, attitude.
Player being observed under a finer microscope, so their deficiencies stand out more.

For Adams, a few things stand out to me. He's a 5th year senior. He had a medical redshirt in 2009 because of shoulder surgery. During this last year, he only had 3 interceptions and 10 Passes Defended all year. On the surface, those numbers look pedestrian until you realize that he was named to the All-Big Ten Team by Coaches..

One thing that does stand out is that his coaches said "We constantly put him on an island and he responded to the challenge. "

At 5'10 6/8", he's not exactly tall, which could be why there are knocks on him.

As for Jenkins, he missed 4 games with various injuries, including a foot injury that required surgery and may cause him to be unable to fully participate in the Combine. Many people felt he should have returned for his senior season. Supposedly has some attitude issues.

There is a line from Gainesville Sun Reporter Talal Al Masry that sums up the players and draft process the best.. "Injury, opportunity, coaching, character, desire are just a few ambiguous factors that can define a career. The measurables, like 40-yard dash times, can tell us how quickly a player can get to the ball but not how willing a player is to tackle once he gets there."

Good stuff DaBruinz.......thanks. Makes sense some of the things you said (finer microscope, juniors declaring etc. )specifically about Adams. Thanks.

Welcome. I do hope some others chime in as well.. I think that Adams could be a good late round pick for the Pats, honestly.. Unless it turns out he's tight in the hips, I think he's the kind of gamer the Pats could use.

Agreed; that's why I was looking at him in the first place. Another intriguing guy is the Oregon safety Boyett who missed all but one game this year with patellar tendon surgery on both knees. If he's healthy he could be a steal later. He was a projected top 60 pick before the knee issues and according to CBS Sports, he's now projected as a 7th rounder to FA.

Although I haven't seen much of Adams this year, my impression from what I've read is that he's had a poor year when playing on the outside but has played very well in the nickel at MSU. I'm afraid I can't add anymore than that.

As for John Boyett, that could be a really nice value addition. He may not give us much more than Chung but even with that, he fills out the 4th Safety spot. On the other hand, he could have Dennard like value. I don't know what his injury status is though.

I would be very surprised that he had a poor year considering he was named 1st team All-Big Ten by the Big Ten Coaches...But, again, I didn't see him play..

If I'm recalling correctly, Jenkins was the number one player in his class. I think if anything, his ranking was due to potential based on that status. I don't recall him every being highlighted for his consistent play.

For those interested, here's Joe Rexrode's Twitter exchange following Johnny Adams's forty time, which was a very respectable 4.45. The Detroit Free Press beat writer for Michigan State athletics thinks Adams will go in the second or third round. https://twitter.com/joerexrode/status/306414576579256320

Seems about right to me. He got burned a few times, notably by Ohio State this season by a speedburner and was outplayed by the other corner, Marqueze Dennard, but he's been doing it so long against such high competition.

He's gone from being a highly touted first-rounder to a sixth rounder projection. The truth lies somewhere in between. Johnny Adams, CB, Michigan State, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

For example, he covered Julio Jones in the Capital One bowl game with Alabama after the 2010 season.
