Chiefs, free agent WR Dwayne Bowe engaged in contract talks

Excellent. I hope they work out a deal very soon.

Why specifically are we excited again?

I'm not keen of getting Bowe, but I don't know if I will be happy if he signs a deal before free agency. The fewer big name WRs on the market, the more teams will be willing to pony up money for Welker.

That was my concern also. The more bigger name players that re-sign with their teams or get tagged, the higher chance of having someone overpay for one of our own or someone that we'd want.

I would be beyond shocked if Bill Belichick spent big money to acquire Dwayne freaking Bowe, but anything can happen...

it would be a horrible idea to give Bowe a big deal

In my opinion, yes it would be.

At least it'd quiet the "we need to let Welker walk and obtain a big name WR" crowd. Actually if they decide to do that I would still trust Belichick, but I sure hope it's not Bowe.

I just don't get why people would be 'excited' if he didn't come here. Personally I think he would be great with the Patriots but I don't see it happening.

As much as I hate his tendency to drop the ball, he's really good at so many other things that the Pats don't have, so I agree. Besides, looking into it, I found this site: STATS Hosted Solution | Player Stats - Dwayne Bowe - Kansas City Chiefs - NFL - Football , which says that he 'only' had 5 drops on 114 targets this past season. If that's true, then a 4.3% drop rate really isn't that bad. Drop rates are admittedly a hard statistic to find, and PFF (a source that I absolutely hate) seems to be the only ones tracking it on a leaguewide basis.

According to PFF (FWIW, and if it's worth nothing to some people, then I understand- just throwing it out there). Welker had a drop rate of 11.28%. Even with the generally correct assumption that drop rate scales up with volume of targets, the message seems to be that, if you're going to question Bowe's hands, you kind of have to question Welker's as well, at this point.

Poor route running (this includes effort plays that aren't made)
Lousy separation for an "elite" WR
Concentration lapses
Very inconsistent hands

I've seen more INTs charged to QBs because of this guy than, perhaps, any other WR I've ever seen, and I've been watching football since the 70's.

If you're looking for elite separation, then Bowe never was your guy and never will be. He runs a 4.5. His strength has always been his size. He's more Anquan Boldin than Randy Moss, especially now that he's reined in the drops to a large extent.

I'm looking for a guy to be worth what he'll be asking. When I put the whole package together, I don't get Bowe as that guy. A lack of separation would be fine if he fought like like hell for the ball the way Lloyd almost always does.

Bowe doesn't always do that.

Fair enough - it always comes down to the money. Same reason why I'm not down on Lloyd like many people are, since he's signed for extremely reasonable money. Bowe would be a huge asset to the Pats, IMO, but I'd agree that he's not quite an elite receiver, and therefore giving him elite money would be overpaying him. I also thought the Ravens overpaid for Boldin when they signed him, so take that FWIW.

I think this statement is quite fair. I also agree that he could be an asset to the team, but the cost is obviously the main problem.

Overpaying for Bowe for 6-7 million (for example) is bad enough, but the kind of money that he'll likely be getting is probably in the double digit range. I think he's just one of those guys that you have to look past, but I'm not doubting the need for a WR of his size and physicality.

Personally, I'd have been much happier had they overpayed for Reggie Wayne last year a lot more, and the rumors are that they tried to do just that.
