Approximately what do you guys think Welker, Talib, Vollmer, Edelman, Woodhead, and other FA's worth?? Or how much do you think we'd have to pay for each of our FA's??

One man's WAGs at the contracts each player signs.

Welker - 3 years, 26M, $12M guaranteed
Vollmer - 4 years, $25M, $7M guaranteed
Talib - 4 years, $32M, $10M guaranteed
Edelman - 3 years, $5M, $1.2 M guaranteed
Woodhead- 2 years, $1.8 M, $500,00 guaranteed

Welker - $9-9.5M per year for three years
Vollmer - $8-9M per year for four years
Talib - $7.5-9M per year for three/four years
Edelman - $2-3M per year for two years
Woodhead - $1-2M over three years

That sounds like three premium Comp picks....

Think Vollmer's numbers will be much less ($5-6m) as he is not really a LT and has that back injury concern. Knees and shoulders can typically be repaired 100%, backs are pretty tricky, IMO.

Not sure if Welker gets that much either. Good with your estimates for Talib, Edelamn and Woodhead.

The Welker thing is going to be interesting, because of the potential swing in evaluating his future value. Is he...

1. An all-star who will play another four years at a high level and make any QB better in any offensive system?

OR...

2. A product of the Pats system and/or Brady (general excellence, or chemistry with), and at the end of his durability, so would be a good but not great slot guy for a year or two before succumbing to the toll of being a small guy getting the cr@p beaten out of him repeatedly?

What teams would give him more than two years with this uncertainty, and of those, which ones would he want to play for?

You changed your wording on Woodhead in comparison to the others. Did you mean $1-$2 million per year over three years? Or did you mean to pay him the vet minimum each of those years for a total of $2.140 million????

It's only 3 premium comp picks if the Pats don't sign any UFAs..

Net.

They may lose other FA as well that may impact the computation (Arrington, Thomas, Woodhead, etc...)

I hope they don't cut all three loose...I know the team's MO is to look ahead, but at some point they have to add a little of "the future is now" mentality. I am confident in BB/Kraft in this regard...

Finnegan, Brandon Carr and those types of guys get $10 mil/year. I think that's how much Talib would want in order to stay.

What you refer to as a premium comp pick is a draft choice after the 96th
pick of the draft. No way you get a player as good as Talib, Vollmer, and
Welker.

Most of them....probably will get contracts more than the Pats will want to pay. Of those on that list, I only see Edelman and Woodhead coming back.

Sorry, per year. I think he'll get above minimum salary, which is why I don't expect him back.

I think Vollmer is an LT next year. Ryan Clady is getting tagged. I'd rather have Vollmer at LT than Jake Long, who's been on a steady decline for the past few years. That leaves two LT candidates in Vollmer and Branden Albert. Both have had back injury problems, but Albert's seem to be worse in the short term right now. Now I'm sure Long is going to get LT money even though I wouldn't give it to him, but that still leaves Vollmer no worse than the third best LT candidate on the market.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree about Vollmer's future at LT. He has five career starts at LT, and none since 2009. I suspect his mobility is less now than three years ago. I don't see much interest in him for LT money at $8-9m.

I guess it only takes one team though!

I guess my conclusion is to pay Welker, Edelman and Woodhead (and also Arrington and Thomas).

I like Arrington when he is playing the nickle but I poop my pants a little everytime he lines up outside. At this point I would not pay him another dime. I would rather have a slightly worse nickleback to have a better back up corner back. Plus I think there are a lot of option for the nickle spot already on the team.

A) You undervalue the nickel position. The nickel back is not a backup position. He is on the field for about half of the defensive snaps.

B) Dennard, Dowling and Williams are our corners. Please list the nickel backs on the team who are anywhere near as good as Arrington.

C) I agree that the backup corner should be better at playing corner than Arrington is.

Its not that I undervalue the nickel I get how important it is but there are very few roster spots and cap space and to have such an important spot filled by a player who cant fill the back up corner spot means you are either thin there or you essentially make another role that much more important. I might be splitting hairs as the talent of your depth 1-5 at the position is important either way but I cant shake how bad I felt when Arrington was forced outside vs the Ravens.

I almost took that part of what I said out but to answer the question I guess the only one currently on the team who could be expected to fill that role would be Wilson as he was the Dime and one could assume/hope he progesses and could take on the nickel (I guess he doesnt back up outside as Corner either but he does at saftey). But don't resign Arrington and find a nickel who can back up Corner as well and you make yourself deeper or less single threaded.

I guess I could be OK with Arrington back to be slot if they improved back up Corner somewhere else but its hard to sit here and perfer that be the plan but if thats the way it goes down than so be it.

I understand your concern. Arrington is ok as the slot WR, but he's ideally your CB4 when you include the ability to step in for the CB1 or CB2 as part of the equation. The problem is getting the other CBs in the crew. Right now, they need three and have just one (Dennard, the CB2). They need the CB1 and the CB3, and it's certainly not unreasonable to doubt Dowling's ability to satisfy either open role.

Negotiate with Grimes and draft the Honey Badger late this April.
