THE WISH LIST FOR THE OFFENSE
Same as before

I would think that the offensive brain trust would want to keep one of the top offenses in the league, and perhaps add a player. They certainly don't want to consider how to deal with the loss of a couple of key players if they can avoid it.

RE-SIGNS
Welker, Edelman, Woodhead, Vollmer and Thomas
Alternative: draft a top OT instead of re-signing Vollmer.

ADDS
A new set of potential additions at wide receiver including a top draft choice.

HOW TO PAY
restructure of Mankins
Extension of Brady (one of our posters thinks that this is inevitable this year)

Have receivers that are garbage (like in 06 before they got Welker and Moss) so Brady can be a bit less "forcy" to his favorite targets. Oh yeah, and get Tebow to lit a fire under Brady's *****, so that he will step up his game in the playoffs.

Oh wait, what Brady or Josh would want?

uh okay, lets see, maybe a big physical receiver like Anquan Boldin, or somethin

I would agree that they'd much rather see a progression with the current offense than to start over with certain things without Wes Welker. That could potentially change a lot of things depending upon your personal feelings. The loss of Welker could even mean a major difference in the running game too, as it could trickle down to some shifts on the OL and bring in more "usual" running sets and less draws.

The re-signs list is obviously debatable. I wouldn't personally have Vollmer in there myself, as that specific player assessment will probably not be what he could fetch from other teams, and not what Bill Belichick would be willing to pay. Edelman, Woodhead, and Thomas should be somewhat reasonable. Any combination of 2 out of those 3 would be just fine, although I would probably include Thomas as one either way.

I think that both of their personal wishlists would include a WR with more ability to shift focus from a safety, which would not only allow for potentially more downfield plays, but also less underneath coverage for our players who specifically excel in that. At the very least it could be a "choose your poison" type issue.

As you said, that could come in the form of a new draft pick or two, and could also be addressed with a lesser cost rejuvenation project from any one of the WRs who may be on the FA list, cap casualties, or roster cuts.

Realizing that you are talking about Mo, I think that a reasonable argument could be made that the 2013 cost of Brady in salary cap hit alone would be quite enough of a reason for extension. There are other aspects such as additional cap savings for this year, along with being able to tie Brady into a "reasonable" contract for the future as the QB numbers continue to rise. His play has still remained at a level that warrants keeping him obviously, and after all, he still only has 2 yrs left on his current deal, so it'd have to be this year or next year anyway....

They need one or two strong offensive linemen and a tall fast wide receiver along with a solid backup tight end.

I think they want to go into the playoffs with everyone healthy. Edelman is a great option and a huge upgrade over Branch. Gronk is a lot better than Hernandez and hoomanawanui. Those two should be our big upgrades for next seasons playoffs.

The last two Super Bowl winners got healthy at the perfect time.

The 49ers stayed ridiculously (luckily) healthy all year. They played only five guys on the offensive line all year!

The Super Bowl winner will always be the team that has luck on their side. Injuries, bounces of the ball and refs. The Pats will need those same things to go their way to win again. You can't plan for it beyond adding some more defensive depth this off-season. Maybe whine to the refs all year too..

Edelman had 21 catches in 9 games. I think it's safe to say that we can hold off on getting his bust made for Canton.

Sure, but he is perfectly fine as the number 3 on a team with two of the best TEs in football. He was also looking great before injury. Injury being his biggest issue.

No, he's not (or at least he wasn't last year), and no he wasn't. Let me repeat:

Edelman had 21 catches in 9 games.

Don't forget that he was playing a lot of those games without the two TEs being together.

Edelman played in weeks
1-3
7-12

Hernandez played in weeks
1-2
6-7
11-16

Gronk playe in weeks
1-10
15

So Edelman played with the TE duo only in weeks
1, 2 and 7

and Hernandez was lost very early on in week 2

21 catches on 32 targets.. He wasn't the focus of the offense. Can't get on his case about that.

seriously why the edelman hate he is a great punt returner, a good 3 or 4 receiver who has shown improvement over his 4 years. and you are refering to his catches if he had MORE then i'd be worried because Brady is targeting Wes, Aaron, Gronk and probably Lloyd before him and even with at least 3 people in front of him he had a little over 2 catches a game

Why not? It's not personal with the kid. I love his effort and tenacity. He just wasn't getting the job done. Saying he's "a great option" is wildly overselling what we've seen from him through the course of his career to date.

I think Edelman a great option relative to the role that he would fill.

When he was taking snaps from Welker, I didn't get it. But he took snaps from Lloyd in the Colts game and he really seemed to take advantage of that opportunity.

The punt returns are a big bonus. The injuries are, possibly, a bigger negative.

...But he took snaps from Lloyd in the Colts game and he really seemed to take advantage of that opportunity...

He had 5 catches against the Colts, which was his season high (tied with week 2). He followed that up with 3 receptions, combined, in the next 2 weeks.

Of his 9 games, 6 were with only one of the 2 starting TEs
Of his 9 games, he had 1 catch or fewer in 4
Of his 9 games, he had 2 catches or fewer in 6

9 of his 21 catches were in weeks 2 and 3, where Hernandez was lost and the team was adjusting. In week 3, he had only one catch after the first quarter.

8 of his 21 catches, more than 1/3 of the entire total of his 9 game season, came in a 5 quarter stretch in weeks 2-3.

Re: Edelperson. . . .

He's the second-best punt returner, by yards per return, over the last four seasons (counting only folks who've returned at least 20 punts in that span), and only Devin Hester and Patrick Peterson have more TDs.

As for his receiving skills, I'm not sure what constitutes reasonable expectations. Even if he plays another ten years, he still won't have as much experience at WR as Welker and Lloyd do now.

In any case, I'd be very nervous about the Pats putting Edelperson in Welker's role, but I'd have no problem with bringing him back as a "#3."

I think the biggest "want" here would have to be for a receiver that can beat single coverage from a #1 CB at a variety of route depths. Unfortunately, there probably aren't too many, if any, realistic options.

I think you break it down pretty well here. The only thing that I'd really debate at all is the WR3 designation. I would much rather see Edelman retained for the reasons that you listed, but have someone else give us better production as the WR3, thus dropping Edelman to WR4 which consists of spot duty, limited reps/trick plays.

Then again, when you have your top 5 targets as WR 1/2, TE 1/2 and RB, it's probably a moot point as to whether he's really a WR3 or a WR4. All in all, I'd just like to see some better production from that WR3 spot, especially if it is a young promising, high-round rookie pick.

Perhaps one of our top 2 draft picks (or 2 of the top 3) provides such an option.
