Would you give up #29 for him? If they can sign him to an extension, I'd be all in. The dude is still 24. No way he talks to BB like that he did to those two bozos.

Mike Max of CBS Minnesota reports that the Vikings will indeed attempt to trade Percy Harvin this offseason...Although acquiring a first-rounder for Harvin may prove too difficult, Minnesota figures to ask for at least a second-rounder and some change.

He'd be a one year rental, but he could make some happy here by replacing either Welker or Lloyd (theoretically, all 3 could be kept for at least this season), and Edelman could still be reatained to round out the WR corps. At $2.9 million for his final season, the roster permutations would seem to be:

My personal preference would be to re-sign Welker, keep Lloyd and Edelman, and use that second rounder to bring in a rookie WR, but I can see merit in going in one of the above directions, so I thought I'd toss the idea out there for some feedback.

I'm with your personal preference. Though drafting is always a risk I hate a 2nd for a one year rental. Use the Harvin cap $ to sign a safety.

Feel free to merge my thread with this one....submitted at the same time. As I wrote, I'd give up more than a #2 if they can agree to an extension first. If not, I'd give up a #2 and take the chance at losing him after two years (one franchise tag year).

Harvin, Lloyd, Edelman, draft WR and/or FA like Gibson, Gronk, Hernandez, Ballard.

A) I think that we would only want him if we could have a long-term contract. Using our 2nd and then some for a one year rental doesn't seem reasonable.

B) If this happened, I would expect Welker to be the man out.
Gronk, Hernandez, Ballard, Harvin, Lloyd, Edelman does seem to work.
Obviously, we could also add a backup (as an upgrade to Ebert) to complete the unit.

They all still address the D. Free agency will be loaded with options after cuts. The top 3 rounds of the draft will be helpful as well. I hope for a trade down from 29 to get more picks on Day 2/3.

I would. Because, it would allow us to re-up Talib and sign a safety. Then, I'd be looking for a cheap back-up T and OLB. Give Cannon a shot at RT. Hopefully, said OLB can play in the nickel.

We'd trade down from 1 to get an extra three.

That would seem like a 2010 Jets approach. 2014 would be rough for WR for us.

1. Our #1 WR would be 33 years old
2. Our #2 WR would be 33 years old.
3. Harvin would be gone, signing somewhere for 7-9 million a year.
4. No young depth at position. Considering all we would have in 2013 draft would be a 1, 3, 7, 7 with this trade.

I agree that the defense will be, and needs to be addressed in at least a couple/few areas, and that could certainly still happen with a deeper safety class and acquiring an extra pick in the process to have that additional 3rd rounder or single 4th rounder.

On top of that I think your point is very good that we will go about addressing and fixing certain issues via lots of cap casualties and roster cuts too, along with lesser level free agents and UDFAs.

Either way you cut it, I am personally seeing better things on that side of the ball. We developed some rookies this year, getting them very valuable reps in the process, actually more than I even really expected for the 4 guy lot(Wilson, Jones, Dennard, Hightower). We will have a full year of McCourty playing FS, which automatically makes the position itself better. Going to a more aggressive scheme obviously made a quick improvement, as the personnel allowed that to happen.

There are also players that are coming in or coming back for competition spots in the likes of the 2 CFL players and guys like Pryor and Dowling, who may/may not make the roster. That right there will add some competition.

Of course this is also coming from someone who doesn't necessarily think that we're quite as "strapped" via the salary cap as some seem to think, so keep in mind that is nothing more than a personal opinion--as always.

I don't think that Belichick is going to stop now, and I think this defense should be looking up and making more progression.

It basically postpones the 'Welker' decision for a year if you let Welker go and keep Harvin, at the cost of a second round pick. To keep Harvin moving forward is probably going to cost something similar to what Welker would cost, only for more years.

I wouldn't do it. No guarantee he shows at least before camp or the season as he's been threatening to hold out since last season. WR's have a hard time picking up this system even when they are all in. He's had some injury issues too plus the migraines. I recall reading a while back that he misses practices even if not games, and that would be a tough sell here. Someone with a higher two and more change to swap will also be willing to give him that deal he's been hankering for.

If I am the Pats, the only way I'd trade for Harvin is if we'd been given permission to talk to him ahead of time and agreed to a 5 year extension.

That and Brady had invited him over to "throw the ball around" to see if he could acclimate to Brady..

I don't think there's any chance of it being a one year thing. There were reports that Harvin saw this past season as his contract year and expects a long term contract from somebody this offseason.

A second plus $10M a year too much. Even if the Pats could get him for a third plus a fourth (which they don't have right now), that new contract would be prohibitive. At least in my opinion, it'd require that Welker, Talib, and Vollmer all leave, which would put a lot of pressure on the Pats to go CB in the first.
