What I mean is that 50 cm dumps with moderate to strong winds are very normal in countries with winter climates (Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, French Alps) and the power never goes down. It's at the end of the spectrum for New England, so far as I can see, but in no way beyond reasonable expectations. I can't help thinking that all of this exaggerated, apocalyptic language (Snowmageddon, etc.) serves to distract people from getting righteously angry at the lousy infrastructure and service they get from the power companies that leaves them without power. (OK, end of the politics.)

I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but those countries also suffer power outages. Here's Austria, for example:

It's a scandal that this perfectly normal event should cause power to be lost. My sympathies to those who are suffering.

5th biggest snowfall in Boston history is not a perfectly normal event. With wind over 40mph and gusts up to 70. Heavy Wet snow to start puts wear on the power lines.

Reporting in from my area of Northeast Pa with just 5" of snow on average throughout my area,all roads just wet and slushy now .....I would say being on the eastern fringe of this storm we were extremely lucky here.

I hope to all others up north and your families that you are safe and sound and had no damage to your homes or cars.

I couldn't help but think last night of what if this storm and mother nature had come 3 weeks and 1 day ago,I bet the AFCCG at Gillette would have been real fun to watch.

Speaking of tragedies, just watching the news and an 11 year old boy died today when his dad put him in the car to warm up (wind chill is brutal) as they were in the process of shoveling it out. Hadn't cleared area around tail pipe. Carbon monoxide. Neighbors raced to clear way for emergency vehicles to access the scene. Dad suffered some sort of cardiac event in the process...

From what I've gleaned, it's not exactly normal. Two storm systems collided with one another which caused this.

The Valentine's Day blizzard of 2008 was much worse for a broader area of the northeast IMO.....I remember my Camry was totally covered in snow..you could only see the roof of the car and we had to dig a moat of snow to get it out

Seeing a lot of that with this storm, on TV and with the 3 vehicles outside my back door...which I cannot open due to thigh high drifting on the landing...ditto front door landing. Only way out is slider to deck. Has two stairways but right side which leads to gate out is impassable due to hip deep drifting... Feel a little less foolish for all my panic food hoarding Thursday... No sign of landscape guys (expect they are doing contract work on streets and for town) or neighbor's kid yet... One industrious neighbor across the street has dug herself out to the sidewalk. Other than that it's very quiet here since the snow ceased around 1.

This was my driveway this morning. The weird thing is the wind whipped around the house all night and kept my walkway around my house completely clear, but left us with 4ft of snow packed in the driveway. Fortunately my brother-in-law came and plowed us out and saved the day. Would've taken my son and I hours to clear one half, let alone the whole thing.

I think what Mo was saying was the father might have had cardiac arrest from either the shoveling of the snow and/or upon seeing the condition of his son.

Official tally for Portland 31.8 inches and I bet we got about that where I live south of there. And the street plow guy is the devil, 4 foot + bankings to get rid of.

On a serious note, make sure all vent pipes are clear if you have propane or K-1, stoves. Also the vent for the clothes dryer. I make it a habit of checking those and for the first time they were both close to being covered.

One lives in Brooklyn and at about 8 last night posted a picture of his street with about an inch of snow and the caption, "A blizzard she ain't." Dude, first of all, it hadn't really started yet. Second, just ask Milford, Connecticut or Boston or Portland, Maine if it was a blizzard. Just because the worst didn't happen for New York city and the surrounding areas doesn't mean the weathermen are chumps. Yes, they are chumps for the dumb name but this played out exactly as they said it would. You cannot precisely predict the areas that will be hit hardest.

I get tired of that stuff every damn storm.

One lives in Brooklyn and at about 8 last night posted a picture of his street with about an inch of snow and the caption, "A blizzard she ain't." Dude, first of all, it hadn't really started yet. Second, just ask Milford, Connecticut or Boston or Portland, Maine if it was a blizzard. Just because the worst didn't happen for New York city and the surrounding areas doesn't mean the weathermen are chumps. Yes, they are chumps for the dumb name but this played out exactly as they said it would. You cannot precisely predict the areas that will be hit hardest.

I get tired of that stuff every damn storm.

I guess you haven't heard the good news...inch or more of rain coming Monday afternoon... Going to be around 38-40 most of the week, not enough to melt a lot but just enough for water content on rooves to become an issue.

Yep. If they got 30+ inches in NYC it would be declared a disaster and the National Guard would be called. Up here in Portland and down in Boston it's a pain in the ***** for a day or two then it's business as usual.
