How angry would you have been if the NON-Holding SB call happened to the Pats ?

The game is over, The Ravens have had their parade, they are World Champs. I hate the Ravens, I like the SF 49ers (My NFC Team), but I'm not letting my bias fog my judgement, the 4th down play for the 49ers was a terrible NON call by the refs. It was textbook holding by the DB on that last play. I don't know how you can let that go uncalled. The biggest game of the year, everybody, including every ref on the field watching that play, and they miss a textbook call like that ? I know if that had happened to the Pats, causing them to lose a SB, I would be sooooo pissed. I know nothing can be changed, but I'm shocked a bigger deal wasn't made of it.

Pretty angry. I understand why the call wasn't made. It would've decided the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, I go back to 2006. In hindsight, that game now sticks with me even more than the 2007 Super Bowl. The Patriots were ripped off that game, from Ellis Hobbs not laying a finger on the receiver (and getting called for PI) to Reche Caldwell being absolutely mugged in the end and no PI, to Troy Brown being called for OPI (when Torrey Smith wasn't), I can say that I'd be pissed if I were a 9ers fan.

The Patriots were just jobbed in 2006. Disgusting.

I'd be really angry that we could have / should have gotten the call but didn't.

But I'd be 10 times more angry, though, that my team had not bothered to show up until down 28-6, and that my team then had to rely on a call being made that will be correctly made only half the time, at best.

Just as angry as I was in the '07 SB when a perfect season was blown to Seymour getting his head pushed back by one of the NYG OL on the helmet catch.

Of course we can all take solace that the ref "started to blow the whistle" for in the grasp...

Or that the NFL sent Hobbs a letter of apology after the horrible DPI call in the 2006 AFCCG that cost them another easy SB victory vs Chicago..

We've had NO luck with calls or ball bounces in my opinion since that was apparently all used up in the beginning of the last decade.

Not at all true. Bmore would've had 2 minutes left and I believe at least one timeout, down by 1 or 3 points, depending on whether SF made the 2 pt conversion. I think the chances are better than 50% that Flacco gets them into FG range for a winning/tying kick.

Anyway, if it happened to the pats, I would be pissed, but, again, we still would have had a great chance to tie or win on a FG.

I would be ticked off an ready to buy into any crazy "The NFL is Fixed" conspiracy theory that crossed my path. At least until the draft, anyway.

I'll flip the situation around, though: The Patriots are in the SB and the game comes down to the same 4th down play. Is there any way that Dennard or Arrington don't get flagged for that much contact with receiver?

Or, put another way, how many officials throw penalty flags if a Patriots DB made the same play? Two or three?

I will absolutely guarantee you that one would have been called. Just the height differential alone would have drawn significant attention.

I'm more pissed that they decided to blitz in that situation while leaving 5'9" Hobbs on Burress in the first place. What the hell did they think would happen?

I want a rule change. There needs to be an option to challenge a penalty call or a non penalty call with one of the coaches challenge flags. Until this happens, bad calls will just remain a part of the game.

Id be pretty pissed. If it were the non holding call alone, one thing. But to add an blatent off side on a game tying 2-point conversion that was not called, a clear hold on a kickoff TD return to start the second half, a 5 yard running into kicker penalty when it should been a 15 yard automatic 1st down and a non call/ejection when player shoves a referee would have made it even worse.

No, I understand what you meant, I was just pointing out that there's no doubt in any of our minds that one would have been called.

To this day I still feel bad for Hobbs on that subject. I've never rewatched any of that game (although I finally got to see a still image photograph at a sports memorabilia store here in Pittsburgh the other day of Manning being in the grasp, which is the closest I ever want to re-live that again) but I remember feeling awful for him as he came back to the sidelines with that shoulder shrug like "what the hell could I honestly have done" look.

I agree with the poster who said that calls like that should be able to be reviewed, although I'm not really smart enough to come up with all of the ins/outs of how it could be done due to time saving concerns etc.

I used to be against this idea but I think you are right the coaches should be allowed to hold the refs accountable. Not sure exactly how this should be implemented as not every penalty should be up for review but maybe something like one penalty only challenge or something or maybe something like only on plays with penalties of plus 20, turnovers, or redzone.

The problem is it's hard to tell sometimes which sentiment is in favor. Seems like just yesterday the league had had enough of the big bad Patriots playing too physical for the likes of the Rams and especially the Colts. So BB adapts his team, and, voila, the league just loves those rough and tumble Ravens.
