2007 Draft = Repeat of 2003 draft????

Well, BOR and some others in the draft forum were talking about how this draft really seems to be light on top end talent but seems to have a lot of meat & potato kind of players. That got me to thinking about the 1st time BB had 2 1st round picks, which was 2003.

I can remember plenty of people mentioning that we should take Steinbach and such only to have BB turn around and trade the pick to Baltimore for a 2nd rounder and a 1st the next year.

I think that the Patriots could be looking for something similar again. All they have to do is find the right partner. Maybe a team like the Texans.... Or maybe the Falcons.....

I thought that going into the bowl season. I was hoping some team would get the hots for T.Smith - OSU - QB. Like Cleveland. AND, we could swing our one for a 2 this year and one next year. But, doesn't seem like there are any qb's out there after Quinn and Russell. That's usually the only position a team will move up a lot to pick up.

Wouldn't surprise me to see the Pats trade down with BOTH first round picks if they don't see value at those positions - and they see starter potential with a handfull of 2nd rounders.

Trade down one of their picks = possible.

Trade down both of their picks = unlikely, unless there are multiple players at what should be the patsies' target positions (ILB, OLB, CB, SS, FS, LT) who are still available, and who carry a mid/late 1st round grade.

The wild card may be Paul Posluszny, who so far could go anywhere from mid 1 to 2nd round.

Unless the value drops off awfully fast or they are offered a really

good deal, I hope they hold on to both of their first round picks. I would

like to see the Pats trade their second round and third round picks and get

an earlier second round pick. This might yield them three potential starters.

Much of what the Pats do will depend on their success in free agency.

In 2003, they had a really good free agency. They got the highest rated

free agent (Rosevelt Colvin), a player rated as a sleeper (Tyrone Poole),

and an injured, washed up discard (Rodney Harrison).

Looking at the LB and DE tweener prospects, Pozlunzy, Buster Davis, Patrick Willis, Jarvis Moss, David Harris, Quinten Moses, Charles Johnson, Anthony Spencer, LaMarr Woodley and HB Blades could all fit into our system. Not too much seems to seperate the players in this group. The best of the bunch could probably still be had at #24, but most of them will be 2nd round picks, and a few of those players will likely fall into round 3 as well.

The value here is likely round 2, unless Belichick loves one of the guys (Moss and Woodley are my favorites).

On the other hand, there is a bigger dropoff in talent at CB/S. If Marcus McCauley or LaRon Landry are available when we pick (not likely) then we should pounce, because the 2nd tier guys are 2nd round talents.

Good point so it leaves the question to be asked will the Patriots fill up on LB's in FA and leave the draft for other needs or could they fill up on S and CB's and wait for the draft to fill up on linebackers.

Either way this team has the time and resources to fill a lot of defensive holes especially this offseason.

Good point about BB loving a guy. Remember that the Pats' philosophy is to move up and take the guy they really want regardless of value charts.
