Anquan Boldin - Aaron Hernandez comparison

While it would be nice to have a strong speedy receiver, Boldin was clearly the Ravens best weapon last night and Pitta was second.
Boldin has such impressive strength and body control but is not likely to break a 4.7 40. As I watch this guy play, I can't help but think that Hernandez should be just as dominant. Hernandez is bigger and faster than Boldin and I would love to see him utilized as such. I mentioned in an earlier post started by AJ that if Welker does leave, I would like to see Hernandez on the field with Gronk and another strong blocking tight end and decent receiver (Ballard I hope). For all the talk about a fast WR, I just see this big lineup as a huge problem for defenses.
Just my thoughts and wishes.

Right. Gronk is actually the better comparison. What catches does Boldin make that Gronk wouldn't, or vice-versa? I'm thinking Gronk may be a little better as a receiver overall, but that may be homerific of me.

The biggest difference between the two is probably blocking.

I would not wish to compare these two at all.

But Boldin has this rock solid physicality which is remarkable for a receiver. He seems to combine the height of a tall receiver with the tank like, close to the ground build of the goal line runner. He's amazing to watch. And does any receiver in the NfL have stronger hands?

I wd love to see him play here for a couple years, but after his performances, i imagine the cost will be too high. Both for us and Baltimore.

A high ankle sprain can affect a player for an entire season. It is stating a real reason for his struggles.

In 2011, the guy had 910 yards and 7 TDs in 14 games as the Pats' #3 target. Let's not make him into this big bust.

He hasn't lived up to fans' unrealistic expectations this year, but he is far from some kind of bust. He will have prove that he is more like 2011 than 2012 next year and the year after or the Pats will let him walk in 2015.

I bet you were calling Mayo overrated and overpaid after he came back in the same season after having suffered an MCL injury and never looked the same thereafter.

Thank you for being the voice of reason. I really hate to see the uninformed comments about Hernandez. Flash back to training camp where Reiss said Hernandez was looking as good as Gronkowski in 2011 training camp, virtually uncoverable and on the verge of a tremendous breakout season with his blazing speed and cutting ability.

In week 2, he suffered a gruesome injury, and I was shocked that he wasn't out for the season. High ankle sprains are brutal and the effects linger for months, even when you're not playing through them. I wouldn't be shocked if Hernandez would have had surgery had it happened later in the season, nor would I be shocked if he still does need surgery.

You hear stories all the time about really bad injuries being the reason for a player's drop in production, although teams don't make excuses and talk about it. I'm 99.9% sure that Hernandez' struggles this year were due to playing on a bum leg and being nowhere near 100%. He gutted it out and played pretty darn well, would still have been a #1 TE option on about 25 teams.

I hope next year AH is at full strength and makes some people eat their words.

Statements like this are for losers. When you tear a ligament or break a bone, it's different from the normal injuries that players go through. Wes Welker takes a lot punishment, but he couldn't come back the next week after tearing his ACL, could he? Did you really think AH would still be the same with a high ankle sprain? Did you see the way his ankle bent when Edelman fell into him? This is an injury that takes months to heal... players like Andre Johnson suffered through it as well and played, much like Hernandez, running at half speed despite not limping around in obvious agony.

Aaron Hernandez is a great player who was still a weapon despite being at best 70% all season. People have such short memories... can't even remember what he looks like at full speed, where instead of getting a 7-yard gain and getting tackled, he's off to the races. You can't blame a guy for a teammate falling into his leg like that and then not magically healing to suit your wishes.

Boldin has better ball skills but Hernandez (when healthy) is far better after the catch, one of the elite in that area in the NFL.

Although they have similar body types, they are completely different types of players, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
