Here's a hypothetical scenario:

You're Bill Belichick. You have an all-time great QB who's still near the top of his game, and you believe will continue to be for the next two seasons at least before father time starts to take his inevitable toll. You also have a young QB in Ryan Mallett who after working with him on and off the practice field for two years you think will be an excellent NFL QB capable of consistently quarterbacking his team into the playoffs and winning a championship with a good enough team around him.

Your old employee, Mike Lombardi, calls looking to acquire Mallett to be the Browns next QB. Given how highly you value Mallett, you reject his offer of the Browns 3rd round pick in the 2013 draft and a conditional high pick in the 2014 draft. You counter offer by asking for the Browns 6th overall pick this year. Lombardi counters that he could not sell that trade to his owner or the Browns fanbase. Heck, he jokes "could I get Brady for that pick". Before ending the conversation, you jokingly respond that it would take "much more than that" to acquire Brady.

Lombardi recounts the conversation to the Browns new owner and a light goes off in both of their minds. Why not go for it! Both their team and city are desperate for a championship and star power.

The next day Lombardi is calling you again. He offers you Cleveland's 1st and 2nd round picks in both the 2013 and 2014 drafts for Tom Brady.

Stunned by the unexpected offer, you tell Lombardi that you need 24 hours to think about it and that if any of it leaks to the media it's no deal and you'll deny it was ever discussed.

You call Bob Kraft who swallows hard but says it's your decision. You're Bill Belichick. You have the cache, confidence and courage to make this trade. Would you make this trade?

It's been a couple of days since this crazy scenario first crossed my mind, and I still can't make up my mind whether I'd do it or not. Sometimes, it seems almost sacrilegious to even consider it, but then, it seems to very practical to forsake a little of the present to secure the future.

Cons: 1. Duh! You would go from having Tom Brady as your QB to someone who has never taken a meaningful snap in the NFL. 2. All of Brady's bonus amortization would accelerate into your 2013 cap.

Pros: 1. Even with the dead money you'd add to your 2013 cap and an early extension of Mallett's contract, you would still have $30 million more to extend the good, young nucleus of your team. 2. You would be able to add 2 1st rounders and 2 2nd rounders to that nucleus over the next 2 drafts. 3. If your assessment of Mallett proves correct and he has good health, you have your QB for the next 12 years of so.

So, I ask you wise and intelligent members of this forum. Would you make this trade?

I respectfully disagree.

It was eloquently presented, thoughtfully crafted, and objectively presented.

The fact that it's an Abomination is beside the point. :snob:

No, but I'd strongly consider it for number one overall in next year's draft for the right to select Johnny Football. Not saying I'd do it right off the bat, but it's something I'd strongly think about.

Brady is a systems QB, why not ? ;-)

Johnny football or Clowney? I'd personally go Clowney over Manziel.

It's an interesting thought. I was listening to PFW in progress as I was reading this thread and they were discussing something similar. They proposed if the Rams called and offered both of their first and Bradford, would you make that trade. I have to admit, I would certainly have to think long and hard about that one.

trade brady for 2 1's and 2 2's?

you would also gain 8M in cap space this year and 21M in 2014

the only challenge would be to not appear too eager

HELL YES......in a heartbeat

EDIT: problem is that the Browns don't have a #2 this year.....but I would settle for a 3 and a 4 this year instead.......

this, I would not do.....no way

So the big prize for trading the greatest qb in history is the third best d-lineman in a weak top end draft?

No to everything in here.

Ride it out to the end. None of these bums or picks are worth his value.

teams who do that tend to have 'dark ages' for a long period of time......you get while the getting is good......brady is likely gone in 2 years tops anyway....how would you NOT do this?

I'd dare to say that brady would not make the browns a playoff team, so next year's picks would be pretty good, too.....

the league is changing.......7 of the playoff QB's are on their rookie deals.......5 of them were rookies or 2nd year guys.

you transition when the opportunity best presents itself......holding on for life until the bitter end will result in a slow painful death and then a fandom that will get to stare at a corpse for a long while until there is a rebirth

If that's the case, then the team will ride into the ground. Brady may want to play until he's 40/41 years old. And, who knows? Maybe he'll be able to do it at a high level like Favre did in '09. But history says that this type of scenario is a rarity. There are quite a few instances where I'd have to think long and hard about a Brady trade. Five years ago, I would have agreed with you. Today? Not so much.

And yes, to the earlier poster. Manziel all the way. The kid is a stud.

Great topic.

My answer: as a fan, NO!

If I were BB, NO!

Why? Because I'm not sold about the 2013 draft class.

Post this topic next year.
And my answer, maybe, will be YES.

Why? Clowney, Manziel and McCarron.

Brady has taken us deep into the playoffs many times and has won 3 superbowls with us.

We were 1 Drive away in 2008, 1 play away in 2012 from winning a SB. If not for shooting ourselves in the foot in 2013, we'd be in another SB.

Trade for another ace CB/S or WR and resign either Welker or Talib... have a decent draft and the superbowl is as good as ours next year. Hell, even if we don't aquire anyone and at least resign Talib and draft a WR I can see us right back in the big game barring any major injury setbacks.

This whole hypothetical is based on Mallett being ready, and I'm not sure how anyone can assume that. Even BB, who sees him in practice everyday, can't know how that will translate to consistent real action, never mind any clutch situation in the playoffs. Those kinds of intangibles are really hard to forecast. You can be 100% sure that Mallett has all the physical and mental tools to be a great QB, and he may still collapse in the postseason, you just don't know.

Not to mention, after a trade like that, there's going to be IMMENSE pressure on the kid. "Hey, you're the heir apparent to one of the greatest of all time. They even traded HIM to make room for you. So don't make us look foolish for it." Not to mention new pressure on BB. If he makes that trade and never wins a championship again, people will always wonder if 2-3 more years with Brady would have given him #4.

It's a gamble, and one I don't think they need to take. Brady can still play at a high level for enough years that Mallett doesn't have to be the replacement. I'm guessing Brady's heir is in college right now, not in the NFL.

Hershel Walker trade plus some more picks would get me thinking about it.

You know what Belichick says about fools who deal in hypotheticals...

If Ian ever does get around to re-writing the posting rules here, attempting to slip trade Brady threads into this forum through the hypothetical back door should be a ban worthy offense.

no, simply because any draft picks we recieve turn from pretty good first rounders, to pretty bad first rounders simply because brady will lead whatever team he is on to the playoffs.

Also this years draft is pretty weak.

Give it one more year, if brady doesnt get that 4th ring, i think at 36 its time to at least explore trades involving first rounders.

Can Cleveland throw in a WR that doesn't get tackled by his own shadow?
