We will be using CBS top NFL prospect rankings.

In round 1 you can take anyone at up to the pick number or below.
In round 2 you can take anyone at up to 5 picks above or below.
In rounds 3 you can take anyone at up to 10 picks above or below.
In rounds 4 and later you can take anyone at up to 15 pick above or below.

You can make up to 3 trades using the NFL trade value chart. Try to be within the trade value or slightly less.

A ballhawking safety for the secondary.

#91 Jelani Jenkins LB 6-0 237 Florida

The Florida connection continues. This time with a pass coverage specialist linebacker to help matchup against the increasing number of athletic tight ends in the NFL.

#106 Robert Lester S 6-1 212 Alabama

Doubling up on a position of need is a typical BB technique. If you strike out on one pick, you can still hit on the other, and if you hit on both you are really set at the position. We've hit the Alabama football factory before as seen in Hightower.

Round 5

#137 Zac Dysert QB 6-3 224 Miami (Ohio)

Now that Mallet is leaving town, the Pats need a new QB prospect to groom. This young passer has shown steady improvement in each of his seasons as a starter.

Round 7

#205 Micah Hyde CB 6-0 196 Iowa

A 4 year corner who was the leader of his defense. Has good size for the position and added versatility via special teams. Could evolve into a solid nickel corner for the Pats.

#221 Brandon Kaufman WR 6-4 214 Eastern Washington

A big tall target who was a man amongst boys at Eastern Washington. Kaufman hopes to follow the footsteps of alumni Taiwan Jones and Matt Johnson to success at the NFL level. Kaufman's 1,850 yard 16 TD 19.9 ypc senior season screams big play threat.

In the past the rule has always been that for round 1 you could take someone up to 3 picks earlier than the allotted draft slot, and in later rounds up to 5 picks. That allows for some slippage. I'm going to go by that rule. Also, I think that the Mallett trade fantasy is just a fantasy right now, so it's silly to design mocks based around it. If something becomes more than a fantasy, I'll include it. JMHO.

Assumptions:

1. Wes Welker and Sebastian Vollmer walk in FA.
2. The Pats re-sign UFA CB Aqib Talib, WR/KR Julian Edelman, CB Kyle Arrington and OG Donald Thomas. They re-sign RFA LB Dane Fletcher and ERFA Jake Ballard. I'm not sure about Danny Woodhead or Michael Hoomanawanui right now - depends on the money situation.
3. The Pats sign UFA S Kenny Phillips (NY Giants).

Mock:

28. Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio St. 6'3" 320#. Currently NFL DraftScout #28.

Super Beast! Hankins is a top 5-10 talent, who slips because of concerns about "inconsistency". Just like Vince Wilfork slipped in 2004. With his connections to Urban Meyer and Mike Vrabel, BB will be all over this kid and will have details that no one else will have. I think he would jump at the chance to add a true blue chip talent to the DL, and an eventual successor to Wilfork. Hankins has the athleticism to play multiple positions in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, including outside. With the addition of Armond Armstead, he would give the Pats the dominant DL they haven't had since 2008. Armstead-Wilfork-Hankins-Jones would be beastly, and if Jones stands up we instantly convert to a 3-4. Hankins has played outside in a 3-4 and has the athleticism to do it. This is just too good a value to pass up.

Note: What I really want is to pick up both Hankins and DJ Fluker (NFL DraftScout #29), but without something like the Mallett trade there's no way we could do it. I'd be in Seventh Heaven if we could pull that off - it would really make us much more physical on both lines.

59. Dallas Thomas, OL, Tennessee. 6'5" 308#. Currently NFL DraftScout #56.

Beast! Since I'm not including the Mallett trade and can't swing both Hankins and Fluker, I go for the next best thing. Thomas has versatility at both tackle and guard, and could probably step in immediately at either position, giving the Pats some flexibility at the RT position along with Marcus Cannon. He's a potential 1st round value that slips. I would have liked to get Barrett Jones (NFL DraftScout #51), but again, without much draft picks or resources to move around with trade ups, I settled for getting another stud in Thomas.

It's tough to pass up WR options like Quinton Patton (55), Justin Hunter (65) and Da'Rick Rogers (74), but I'm a firm believer in building around the trenches, and added 2 talents like Johnathan Hankins and Dallas Thomas would be too good to pass up. WRs can be addressed later.

91. Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas. 5'9" 179#. Currently NFL DraftScout #87.

Greyhound! A world class sprinter and 2012 Olympian in the long jump, Goodwin showed surprising WR skills including good route running and excellent hands at the Senior Bowl. He would combine with Jeff Demps to provide an amazing speed package that would be very difficult to defend, with the ability to take it to the house at any time.

*** Trade: The Pats trade Daniel Fells to Chicago for #149 overall. The Bears need TE help, and Fells is a good blocker who could help with their weak OL. The Pats dump Fells' salary.

146. Chris Harper, WR, Kansas St. 6'1" 228#. Currently NFL DraftScout #144.

Sleeper Stud Horse! Harper is an Anquan Bolden/Chris Carter kind of physical WR who can dish out some punishment to DBs and move the chains, but who has surprising speed and deceptive breakaway capability. He is a terrific blocker. Where Goodwin adds speed and playmaking, Harper adds physicality to the WR position.

*** Trade: New England trades S Steve Gregory to Detroit for #161 and a conditional 2014 pick. With Kenny Phillips signed and Tavon Wilson and Nate Ebner hopefully making a leap, Gregory is expendable. The Pats dump his salary. With Louis Delmas a FA (and always injured even if they keep him) Detroit needs FS depth, and gets a veteran for an early 6th round pick.

161. Kyle Juszczyk, FB/H-Back, Harvard. 6'1" 248#. Currently NFL DraftScout #158.

Sleeper Stud Horse! Juszczyk is a big dude who can clear out the pile as a blocking fullback but who also has soft hands and is a nice receiver out of the backfield, or in motion. There are rumors he may have close to 4.5 speed, and he could be a good depth option as a backup "move TE" given that Aaron Hernandez has yet to play a full 16 game season. He would help the running game in short yardage situations and running inside against tough lines, and provide depth at TE.

*** Trade: NE trades #202, 219 and a 2014 6th round pick to Tampa Bay for #171.

171. Tyrann Mathieu, DB, LSU. 5'9" 178#. Currently NFL DraftScout #181.

Fallen Beast! The Pats trade up to get the "Honey Badger", who will add toughness and attitude to the secondary along with Talib and Alfonzo Dennard. He can play a nickel/dime slot CB role, and will excel on STs. Talib, Dennard, Dowling, Arrington and Mathieu would be a very good CB group. McCourty, Phillips, Wilson and Ebner would be a very good safety group.

Mock Variant:

If you accept a Ryan Mallett trade (not for #6, IMHO, but maybe for a 1st round pick) then I pick up DJ Fluker at #29, and get Justin Hunter at #59 (currently NFL DraftScout #65). With Lloyd, Hunter, Edelman, Goodwin and Harper the Pats could have a true "wide receiver by committee" (WRBC) approach like they used to, instead of targeting almost half of all pass attempts at 2 receivers (304/641 pass attempts in 2012 went to either Welker or Lloyd). Add in the TEs, a FB/H-Back like Juszczyk, and more use of the RBs, and the offense could be much more diverse, and more physical than at any time since 2004.

I know next to nothing about the incoming rookies, so I'm tempted to go with whatever Mayo says. However, I've got a different set of assumptions of what the Patriots do in free agency, so things are a bit different here.

On the reset, The Pats get 2/41, 2/59, 3/91, 6/164, 6/173, 6/175, 7/205, and 7/221. I can see them trading two sixths for a fifth, but I'm not going to anticipate that. My general impression is that next years draft will be much better than this years. I wanted to try to pick up another 1st for 2014, but couldn't see it. Buffalo's 2nd should be pretty good though.

I would literally cry tears of joy if this exact mock came to light. While I'm not as high as most are about Hankins, he is a good player and the Vrable / Meyer connection angle is also not something I thought about.

This pick is on pure potential. The guy plays high at times and sometimes OL get under him. But the reality is they just don't make many like him and i am trusting out Coaches on this one.

Young WR for a team desperately in need of one. I know we can do without them but taking a shot and maybe getting a Torey Smith type on the outside is worth it in my opinion.

#59 Dallas Thomas, OL, Tennessee

If Vollmer Leaves like i suspect he may (basically if someone pays him what a healthy him is worth) then Thomas can duke it out with Cannon for the RT possition

#45 Margus Hunt DE
I am doubling up on the DE (Raw) position and hoping to strike some gold. I know it's a lot of draft capital to be throwing at one position but i believe DE and sub rush DE has become one of the most important positions in this passing league. If both Ziggy, Ansah, Jones and Hunt work out... i am sure it is a problem BB wouldn't mind having. Worst case scenario this guy kills some people on Special teams.

#52 Barrett Jones C/G/T Alabama

Don't think i'd be able to get him here but these are the rankings. Slight trade up to get a guy who really completes the Depth chart for the pats OL. Solder, Mankins, Wedel, Connoly, Fluker, Cannon and Jones is a very very talented young group.

#80 Kenny Stills WR

Young dynamic body to add to our WR corp. I don't know what will happen this year but a Stills could help us.

#115 Tavarres King WR

Doubling up again at a position and hopefully one of the 2 will emerge. King had some good practices at the senior bowl from reports and hopefully can add some play making ability at WR if Wes goes.

#205 Tyrann Mathieu, DB, LSU

Fallen Angel hopefully we strike gold again like Hernandez.

Hopefully can fight it out with Mathieu, Arrington and our other young DB's for the slot position.

In this 2nd mock i have basically just doubled up at the positions i wanted with a tonne of talent and am hoping 1 of the 2 picks stick (except for the 1st round where i think they should really play straight away)

Sharrif Floyd would be a great alternative at DT, but right now he's projected to go higher (currently #17 on NFL DraftScout; Scott Pioli thinks he could be a top 10 pick). But that's a recent change, and it could change again. Either one would work for me.

I select my just for fun rule that the pats trade Tom Brady to the Browns for 2013 1st rd, 2013 3rd rd, 2014 1st rd, 2014 2nd rd, QB colt mccoy, and WR josh gordon.

Well, trading Brady would save $8 million in salary cap room.

And I imagine that if you're not a season-ticket holder already, you'd be able to get them this season. Of course, Boston would need to post round-the-clock guards on the Tobin.

It's more the how of Brady's exit in your scenario than the fact that he is.
