Great year for Safety Free Agents

ahhh another BS peter king article

If I recall correctly Dashon Gholdson elected to stay with the 49ers rather than sign with the Patriots in 2011 even though the Pats offered him more money. Assuming that is the case, then how much would the Pats have to outbid the 49ers to get him now? While I would like to see him sign with the Pats, but I get a feeling that is not going to happen.

Interesting list of potential players. I'm least psyched about near end of career Reed whom I would have killed for at his last contract.

Who will we take home from the Safety Dance?

Its also worth noting that this is a big draft year for safeties. Probably the deepest class in 5 years.

You have highly regarded prospects such as Kenny Vaccaro, DJ Swearinger, Eric Reid, Jonathan Cyprien, Shamarko Thomas, Tony Jefferson, Matt Elam, TJ McDonald, Bacarri Rambo, David Amerson, Phillip Thomas, some under the radar guys like Shawn Williams, John Boyett, Earl Wolff, Bradley McDougald, plus some small school kids in Cooper Taylor and JJ Wilcox.

A rookie ............ too much money versus limited need (McCourty and a developing Wilson) for a FA.

Byrd isn't happening. The Pats are perfectly fine at FS.

Since the Patriots don't play a true SS/FS system, your point doesn't really fit. Furthermore, the presence of Gregory in the starting lineup shows that this team could pretty clearly work with Byrd.

I don't expect it to happen because of cost, but let's not shut down the idea because of an antiquated FS/SS notion.

Hope Bill goes after Reed hard.

Reed

BB cannot say enough good things about him. I dont believe that Baltimore will give Reed another contract because this draft is loaded with Safeties. Reed says he still wants to play like hes letting teams know that he will be on the market. Baltimore doesnt strike me as a team that keeps old players even though Lewis got another contract after playing hardball.

I think BB will judge his play from 2012 and determine that its still at a very high level Ed Reed NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com Maybe Reed is only around for a couple of seasons, but this team needs at least 1 Safety who can actually cover and isnt afraid of contact in run support.

BB paid a mid-round draft pick for Aqib Talib to play just a handful of games here.

He's also blown a ton of draft picks on failed DBs (Wheatley, Butler, Chung, Dowling, Meriweather)

It's obvious he wants to get the secondary fixed. I think he will do as much as he can to sign a good DB.

I agree with most of what you said, but don't count out Dowling just yet. I'm giving him one more chance.

YouTube Matt Elam, then hope that he'll be around when we're up to bat.

reed strikes me as a raven for life..especially if they win the SB this year..just like lewis

Belichick and Brady discussing Ed Reed - YouTube

Just in case people aren't aware of the respect two key Patriots hold for Ed Reed. Note that almost nothing they say about him speaks to his athleticism. It's all football intelligence (which doesn't go with age).

Ed Reed would be the perfect situation.

Wilson still needs 1-2 years to develop, why not have him dominate the middle of the secondary for a year or two??

Kenny Phillips would be nice too. Something tells me due to his injury problems in the past he could come way cheaper than people think. He could be Bill's next Rodney, you never know.
