Great year for Safety Free Agents

Personally I'd like to see Jairus Byrd as a Patriot. William Moore is an underrated player. Goldson we already tried signing a couple years ago and couldn't get him. Glover Quinn isn't amazing, but he's a solid Safety.

Jairus Byrd, S, Bills. Age: 26.
Jairus Byrd is one of the top safeties in football. He shuts everything down in coverage - he was responsible for no touchdowns all year - and he constantly comes up with turnovers. He's also decent in run support and is seldom penalized. He deserves a massive contact.

Dashon Goldson, S, 49ers. Age: 28.
Dashon Goldson had some issues in coverage back in 2011, but did what he needed to do to correct them this past season. Goldson made the Pro Bowl for good reason.

Ed Reed, S, Ravens. Age: 34.
Ed Reed will turn 35 in September, but he still played at a high level for the Ravens this past season despite battling an injury.

Louis Delmas, S, Lions. Age: 26.
Louis Delmas is one of the most talented safeties in the NFL, but he just can't stay healthy. He's missed 13 games in the past two seasons.

Glover Quin, S, Texans. Age: 27.
A converted cornerback, Glover Quin has starred in his new safety role over the past couple of years. He was particularly sound in 2012, so he deserves a nice contract.

William Moore, S, Falcons. Age: 28.
William Moore missed the final quarter of the season with a hamstring injury, but he performed extremely well in all facets otherwise.

Kenny Phillips, S, Giants. Age: 26.
Kenny Phillips is one of the better safeties when healthy, but he missed most of 2012 with a knee injury.

Stevie Brown (RFA), S, Giants. Age: 26.
Stevie Brown was impressive in relief of an injured Kenny Phillips, picking off eight passes. His one weakness is run support.

LaRon Landry, S, Jets. Age: 28.
No one wanted LaRon Landry last offseason. He was considered an injury waiting to happen. Well, he proved everyone wrong with a solid 2012 campaign. He should still be considered fragile, but he has definitely earned himself a nice contract.

Chris Clemons, S, Dolphins. Age: 27.
Chris Clemons proved to be a quality starting safety for the Dolphins this past year. He was penalized only twice, though he had trouble tackling on occasion.

BB paid a mid-round draft pick for Aqib Talib to play just a handful of games here.

He's also blown a ton of draft picks on failed DBs (Wheatley, Butler, Chung, Dowling, Meriweather)


It's obvious he wants to get the secondary fixed. I think he will do as much as he can to sign a good DB.

We did not go into the trade knowing he would sign or even that he'd be a good teammate.

The fact that we gave up a draft pick doesn't matter to Talib, and it doesn't matter to BB when considering an offer to Talib vs someone else.

So that is irrelevant.

I do think they'll reach a deal though because
1. He's shown his impact on the team
2. He's talked glowingly about being here. His talk seems to fit the pattern of players with problems elsewhere taking a discount to play here.

The thing about Talib is that this is his first real opportunity to sign a big contract after his rookie deal. Sure, he was a top 10 pick (I think), but he may want to try and hit the big payday, for most players, this is the contract where they make the most money.

Leave McCourty at FS. Not too excited about Reed, Landry, Philipps, Goldshon could have come here last year and didn't, don't know enough about Moore and Clemons, not that overly excited about these SS candidates.

Don't give up on Wilson.

Get somebody that can cover a tight end.

I think the Patriots would have drafted Kenny Phillips with the pick that Goodell took from them after spygate. He fit a need for them, and the Giants took him in that spot.

Kindve surprised no one is making a case for Delmas, who went one pick ahead of Chung years ago. He is known for his heavy hitting, which is what we seem to all be clamouring for, and will come quite a bit cheaper than other options on the board due to missed games this past year.

Just to clarify a few things.

Gholdson visited here a few years ago and some seem to think that he didn't sign then so why would he now? But from what I remember about that visit was that he liked it here and had a tough choice but eventually chose to go back to the 49ers. A reasonable choice not to leave which seems to be paying off for him now as he is in the Bowl and set to cash in again. So while I think there is a good chance he would want to stay in San Fran should he leave and we persue him I see no reason why we wouldnt have a slight advantage having put some time in with him already.

Also on the flip side I occassionally see some people talk about Landry and putting aside his injuries and body type (which we passed on last year) he was very upset with the way we handled his visit and I see no way that he would decide a year later to come here even if we changed our mind from last year.

Now to what I want. I tihnk we need at least one of the following and possibly even 2 Byrd, Delmas, Wilson, Reed, Phillips, or Moore.

We all like McCourty at FS but I have two reasons for ignoring this and making 2 safeties a priority. One I still think he could be a very good corner he just needs some decent safeties behind him. But more importantly this just builds much needed depth back there. Bouncing McCourty between safety and CB may not be the best think for him but it adds a layer of depth that can be an asset.

My choice would probably be Byrd as our number 1 FA signing and then get one of the older or more injury plagued guys a little cheaper Wilson probably being my choice. I would also still want Talib back but I understand money likely will prevent all 3. But if we got all three than we would have 4 guys in Dennard, Talib, Wilson, and Byrd that we would all expect to start leaving McCourty as the key depth player who can back them all up.

I think we need a little overkill back there because we have had 2 problems in the secondary one finding guys that can actually start but even bigger of a problem has been our depth.
