Perfect complement to Lloyd outside 6'2" - 200 lbs. tough outside the numbers receiver and not a head case. He has a Patriots pedigree - brother Mike Hartline had a cup of coffee as a backup quarterback in 2012.

I've already mocked this in my offseason "blueprint". But the questions are:

1. Does Miami use the franchise tag on him? He and Sean Smith are the 2 most likely guys to get tagged. Whoever doesn't get tagged or extended should be a potential target.

2. How much $ do we have to spend? Realistically, going after Hartline is probably an alternative to Welker, not in addition to Welker.

But we might be able to get Hartline and Kenny Phillips for not much more than it would cost to extend Welker.

He is high on my wish list as well. Think that he would be a great Patriot. Even with lots of cap space, doubt that the Fins franchise him.

If the Pats let WW walk, also give me Amendola (injury risk, I know, but young WW potential in this offense) and Collie (even bigger risk but won't cost much and big reward if he can stay healthy). Don't want Bowe. Jennings and Wallace will be too pricey. Draft a burner.

Many stereotype Hartline as a slot because he's white. He is not, though. Hes 6'2, thats not quite a slot receiver build. So don't consider him a Welker clone.

I really don't know what to think about Hartline's market this offseason. Yes, he had almost 1100 yards. But over 250 of them came in one game. Is that game a complete outlier, or did he start attracting way more defensive

Either way, I'm interested if he's in the $6M a year range rather than the $9M a year range.

People need to be careful with this guy. On a team full of crappy receivers, the least crappy of them will have decent numbers. Doesn't mean he doesn't still mostly suck. Also, he had 1 TD last year and 6 TOTAL in 4 YEARS! That screams to me that he is a guy that cannot get open or make the play when it really matters.

Hartline is a pure outside receiver. Not sure where you'd get that idea.

His best attribute is that he runs some of the sickest comeback routes in the NFL, and then when defensive backs try and camp on that he hits them with double moves (see the 250 yard game for an example of that). He's faster than quick, so the routes he excels at running are mostly intermediate, not slants or screens like a Branch or a Lloyd. Tannehill liked throwing outside the numbers a lot to keep the chains moving, so he and Hartline meshed well.

The touchdowns thing is a good observation, and further reinforces what I said above imo. Hartline's game is very north-south, and is based on getting vertical separation. In the red zone he doesn't have that kind of space, and doesn't have the quickness to change up his game.

How much would he cost though? I don't see the Pats spending 6m per year on a #3 WR. Hartline doesn't sound like a #1 guy to me.

That is precisely the right question. The Dolphins are wrestling with the value right now and have to play the first card. If he makes it to free agency, there will be a market for this guy.

Hartline made $1.4 million and totaled 1100 receiving yards in 2012. Miami will want to keep him, but he is not worth a franchise tag. He ought to test the market before signing.

Brandon Lloyd signed for $12 million for 3 years. I think Hartline is in the same vicinity.
