I think it is safe to say the Patriots are the best coached team in the NFL. They're all schooled in scheme, fundamentals and their overall football IQ's are better than 98% of their opponents.

John Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh
Pete Carroll
Tom Coughlin
Mike Tomlin
Rex Ryan
Chain Gaily
Eric Mangini
Ken Whisenhunt

Looking at that list I'd say the two Harbaugh's, Tomlin, Coughlin, Carroll all easily in the top 10 coaches in the NFL today. Whisenhunt IMO got a raw deal in Arizona and was a really good head coach that took his team to the SB in 2008. Then you have Eric Mangini who was under BB and 2 division rivals who match up against us frequently.

IMO we lose when we face teams that can eliminate that coaching and intelligence gap. That's when it comes down to pure talent and winning 1 on 1 battles.

We have Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez on offense and Vince Wilfork and Chandler Jones on defense as players whom I would consider to be able to win their 1 on 1 match against anybody in the NFL. On Sunday we were without 2 of the 4 and that is what cost us the game..

That is why I think we need to focus on adding 1-2 physical freaks who can go out and beat any scheme or game plan. We may of gotten off to a good start with Armstead yesterday for the defensive side.

This is definitely true. That's why I wouldn't mind letting Welker go and using the money to sign Bowe.

I think physicality is the biggest issue not just talent. We have a few guys that can match up in a fight otherwise its mostly finesse.

hold on a second...we were 2 gronkowski injuries away from possibly winning 2 Super Bowls in 2 years...lets not be crazy. our team is talented. yes, Brady covers up for a lot of guys but we are a great team

I think this is a cop out yes we were that close, but you can say that for any team. You have to build a team that can win with injuries and can win dog fights in the playoffs.

I didn't say it wasn't talent. Football IQ is a talent... We have other players that have above average skill levels. What I'm saying is other than Gronk, AH, Wilfork and Jones who else do you think can go out and dominate anyone they're matched up against no matter what?

Green Bay won the SB in 2010 with 15 players on IR... Other than Tom Brady we need to be built to overcome core player injuries this is the NFL.

The 2004 Pats won the SB with 11 guys on IR, including Ben Watson and Ty Law. The 2003 Pats won the SB with 13 guys on IR.

The 2011 Pats came within a minute of winning the SB with 13 guys on the IR, and a number of others playing with serious injuries (Mankins, Gronk, etc.).

What's your point? Your agreeing?

I totally agree with this philosophy. This has always been what SP does on offense, and we are very deep at almost every position. When we lost P.Thomas, Graham, Moore vs SF in the playoff, and a lot of guys in the seahawks playoff, the offense still managed to put up over 30 pts. Which should be enouph to win a football game. SP does not believe in signing elite players. He would rather have 3 very good players.
But, I wonder if our deep offense is costing us money on defense, and one of the reason our defense has never been that great.
Teams like Atl, are a turner or jones injury away from being not as effective on offense. Depth is I very important thing Im thinking. Based on our offense its pretty normal for your primary players to be out 2-4 games, and not abnormal for your 2nd string to be injured in that period.

But it seems from the saints season, that even with so much talent on your team, not having elite coaching and play calling will greatly impact your team.

You can't say that for the NY Jets. Or any of the non-playoff teams. I'd say the final 8 teams were three or four players away, but that leaves 24 teams who didn't have a reasonable shot at a championship.

Remember the good ole days when game announcers use to comment on how deceiving the patriots were on defense?

Bill doesn't trick quarterbacks with his disguises anymore.

I don't understand.
You listed the teams that beat a team that wins more games than any other and find that 4 of 9 (Harbaughx2, Tomlin, Coughlin) are good, 2 (Carroll, Ryan) are mediocre and 3 have been fired and are unemployed, and you conclude that based upon your assumption that we have clearly the best coach in the league we lose because that collection of overall averageness leveled the field?
Did you think this post through?

This is a bunch of crap. What is finesse about this team? We have a great QB so we throw the ball well. That does not equal finesse.
We ran the ball the 2nd most times in the NFL.
We play 2 gap defense and have the largest LBs and front 7 in the NFL.

This is 2013 not 1973. Every team throws and throws a lot. A passing team is not a finesse team, and the one that runs the ball the 2nd most times surely isnt either.

The way how physical teams like the 49ers, ravens, giants, and cardinals manhandle the offense.

It's how creeps like richard sherman, pollard, suggs. and bart scott trash talk the brady and the offense.

Willingness to take a few personal foul flags for one

They scored 35 on the 49ers. They scored 30 in the reg season vs the Ravens. They put up 428 yards Sunday. In what universe where they 'manhandled'?

I'm sure it makes you feel like a big tough guy to question the manliness of the team because they didn't give you that win you were entitled to, but seriously, grow up.

You think that 15 yard penalties are a good thing? Let me guess, because you think NFL players get scared if you hit hard, right?
