Rumor: Ryan Mallet to Browns for 6th overall pick

Pre-season footage and practice reports.
Well there was a report I believe from Rapoport that the Pats were purposely holding Mallett back in the preseason. And this was the same preseason where Solder and Cannon both looked terrible, which affected the QBs.

I doubt Mallett is with the Patriots at the start of camp. He has 2 years left on his rookie deal and then is going to look to cash in. Does anyone here think Brady is retiring in 2 years?

It is the perfect storm for the Patriots:
1) Crappy QB draft class.
2) Last year's QBs burst onto the scene immediately
3) Mallett has 2 years exposure to the NFL
4) None of the flags that caused him to slip all the way the 3rd have surfaced in the last 2 years
5) He still has 2 years left on the cheap

I don't think the Patriots would get the #6 pick straight up for Mallett. Something like Mallett + #29 for the #6 seems a little more plausible. Mallett's talent and potential is as high as any of the QBs in this draft. Demand is going to be high for him this offseason.

A starting QB and #29 for #6?? In a year with few if any top rated QBs???? In a year when demand is gonna be high (your words)??
The Pats won't be giving away two high rated players to gain one

Mallett + #29 to Cleveland for #6 + their 4th- + 5th-rounders.

In this draft, I'd trade down, too.

Here's a scenario where I might not:

1. We don't re-sign Vollmer.

2. Eric Fisher is on the board at #6. The guy is a serious beast. I think he's better than Kalil last year and possibly better than Joeckel. He's also another level above Lane Johnson who I do like.

3. Draft Fisher and switch Solder to RT.

I would probably only do this if we traded for the #6 outright.

The SIXTH overall pick for Ryan Mallet. Hey maybe while were at it we can traded Branch to Detroit for Megatrone.

Look at these names..

Geno Smith
Tyler Wilson
Matt Barkley
Logan Thomas
Tyler Bray
Teddy Bridgewater
Johnny Manziel

Do you see anyone on this list that you'd suggest could be a prospect to be a Franchise QB than Mallet.

Lets remember Mallet was in the conversation for #1 overall pick prior to the 2011 draft and fell because of character concerns not talent. Well coming to NE working behind TB and under BB in addition to losing a substantial amount of weight after his rookie season I think addresses those concerns.

Jaguars
Browns
Jets
Chiefs
Bills
Raiders
Cardinals

Ryan Mallet is not Matt Cassal he was a top recruit, a starter throughout his college career and considered a top 10 talent.

Well Teddy Bridgewater is way better than Mallett, but I take your point.

In terms of the Cleveland #6, there are a number of factors in favour of the pick.

1. As you noted, the quality of the QB's is very weak. Geno Smith is down to #14 on NFLDraftScout's rankings and there's been some suggestion that no QB is first round worthy this year. Also read today that the Bills aren't that interested in Nassib. Possibly, possibly not but I don't think there's any HC or GM excited about the draft class this year at QB.

2. Michael Lombardi loves BB.

3. Michael Lombardi loves Mallett. Or at least he did in the run up to the 2011 draft. Had him ranked as the #1 QB in the draft and didn't think he had character concerns:

From a webchat:

Q. Where do you think Ryan Mallet will end up? and do you think he has the most QB skills of all in the draft?

ML. Hey Johnny, I think he's going to go in the first round, I think Miami would be a good destination. He does have some of the best skills in the draft, he's accurate short, medium and long and has great football awareness.

Q. Hi Brian, In all seriousness, given the slow progression of Chad Henne, how likely do you feel it is for Miami to go after a QB? Who do you feel would be the best fit if they did?

ML.Hey Pat, I think there's a high probability they go after a QB, and as I just mentioned I think Mallett is a good fit. I've watched the tape on Mallett, I think he's a good player.

4. Cleveland doesn't have a #2 pick and next years top 10 looks potentially outstanding whilst this years, not so much. It might make more sense to get the pain over and done with.

5. Their new offensive scheme will most likely consist of handing the ball off and throwing it deep, and per above, Lombardi has already acknowledged Mallett's accuracy throwing the ball deep.

6. Mallett is younger than Weeden and cheaper and the new FO has no personal commitment to Weeden. They may feel that they could get some value back by trading Weeden (they'd still have McCoy as backup).

7. If the trade works out well for the Browns, Lombardi looks like a genius, particularly if all the QB's in the draft bust. Yes he'll look like a fool if it doesn't work out, but if they don't win with Weeden or a newly drafted QB, he'll look bad anyway.

8. Patriots don't have to sell so they can hold out for whatever price they think worth it.

I don't think it will happen because it just sounds too good to be true but there is a bit of a coming together of circumstances that makes it at least plausible.

Beautifully presented, Sir.

At this early Stage in my Analysis, I'm having grave doubts about finding a QuarterBack Prospect worthy of even a 2nd Rounder, much less a 1st...though of course a few will get egregiously overdrafted, as always...

This year's awful QuarterBack Draft Class & Lombardi's hiring could indeed prove to be The Perfect Storm.

or you could trade down...possibly get Lane Johnson, and keep solder at LT...moving Johnson to RT.

I dont think the Pats would draft a Lineman that high when they just drafted Solder so high.

That, and solder has looked very good at LT...and most would say hes not even fully developed.

The Browns do not have a 2nd round pick this year because they gave
it up to get Josh Gordon is the supplemental draft.

I do not believe we will get a 1st round pick for Mallet.

I could see a 5th in 2013 & a 2nd in 2014 for Mallet.

JeMarcus Russell and Tim Couch actually were #1 picks. Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, and Vince Young actually were top 3 picks. I could name another dozen busts that were drafted in the top ten.

Mallett was talked, by Mort mostly (whose son was Mallett's backup at Arkansas), as a possibility for the first QB taken in the draft 12 months before the draft actually happened. The fact is that he was a third round pick, and every single team passed on him between 1 and 4 times.

So what's changed? Why are the Browns, or any other team, going to give a 1st round pick for him now, with virtually no playing time to demonstrate how he's improved?

Every single person on your list has as good a chance to be a franchise quarterback as Mallett, and they can be had much cheaper.

Jamarcus Russel, btw, is attempting a comeback

1. because he hasn't had any incidents regarding the only red flags that held him from being a 1st round pick (character).

2. Weeden was picked by the former GM, who is not in charge anymore. The new GM might want to have his guy.

Those are the things that changed since last year (even assuming he hasn't improved, which he surely has).

Does this justify trading the #6 pick? Imo no, a high 2nd round pick would be justified for reasons already quite a few posters have listed before.

I've said it before. I still think Arizona is a better trading partner. We get their 2nd and a conditional pick if Mallett performs very well. They get to use their 1st on a LT such as Eric Fisher. They get their qb. Already have some wr's. Sign a couple of veteran OL and they'd be much improved.

I still think Cleveland's 2014 1st is what we should be targeting. Maybe they throw in a player/pick...

That pick could be a good one for getting Clowney.

If that's all you can get for Mallet, you keep him. He's probably the Pats best option for backup QB to TB.

Trade him only if you can get something of (good) value

Agree with Andy, it's probably not going to happen. But I know that every fan on this board would take that trade in a heartbeat, I would love that for sure.

I wouldn't! :mad::mad::mad:

That would leave a Super Bowl contender with only a 36 year old QB without a suitable backup, and no provision for a follow on QB, if a career ender happened.
