Yeah, this is the guy who wanted Hoyer and called the Weeden pick at the time a "panicked disaster." They're definitely in the QB market.Send Mallett packing!
Yeah, didn't he say Cleveland was dumb for not giving up a 2nd round pick for Hoyer?Yeah, this is the guy who wanted Hoyer and called the Weeden pick at the time a "panicked disaster." They're definitely in the QB market.
I don't know if he said that, but he definitely said that if he were in charge of the 49ers, he would have made a move for Hoyer as an RFA as opposed to trading for Kolb. We know he was at least half right, because Kolb stinks.Yeah, didn't he say Cleveland was dumb for not giving up a 2nd round pick for Hoyer?
Perhaps more interestingly — and slightly more believably — Lombardi also mentioned that he’s sold on Mallett being a top-20 overall pick after speaking to folks around the league.
“I’m convinced he’ll go in the first round,” said Lombardi, predicting Mallett will land “Somewhere between 1 and 20.”
Unfortunately for Weeden, the guys who drafted him already got fired, and the new guys aren't going to give a darn where he got picked unless he can play. But yes, the fans will be angry, and probably rightfully so. It was a panic move by a GM that probably knew that he'd keep his job if Weeden succeeded and wouldn't be around to deal with the consequences if Weeden failed.Wow, wonder how cleveland fans will react to this. Can't see them giving up on weeden after throwing a #1 pick away. That was a crazy pick. Should have been a #3 at most for weeden. #1 + Weeden for Mallett... haha.
Conversely, should they all blend in and mix well, they've got a ton of good football minds running the organization which would bode very well for them turning things around.Pioli used to say that a GM's job, even if his title was only VP of PP, was to find talent that fit his HC's schemes. If so Lombardi's penchant for all things BB may work against him. He's now either searching for talent that will fit whatever Chudzinski and Norv and ? (maybe Horton) want or he won't be back in business long or Cleveland will be in the market for a new coaching staff again in 2 seasons. Weeden dosn't fit Norv's offense. Neither does Hoyer. Mallett might because of the arm. Would have to learn a whole other philosophy and terminology, though. Air Coryell version of the West Coast.
I get the feeling Cleveland has hired too may chiefs and not enough indians. Lots of established coaches probably pretty set in their ways. OC has already been a HC. DC if they hire Horton is intent on becoming one. Lombardi isn't a GM, Banner will have a lot to say and probably final say. Could end up with a lot of guys working myopically at cross purposes. And that seldom works out to anyone's advantage and often ends up in a round of finger pointing and FO or staff retooling.
