Browns hired Michael Lombardi as GM.

Update: Michael Lombardi's title in Cleveland will be VP player personnel.

Guess the reports were half true. Also ... how did NFLN get beat on this story?

With Andy Reid in KC and Lombardi in Cleveland, at least we have 2 potential trading partners on draft day. I miss Al Davis.

Funny. I was just watching "A Football Life- 1995 Cleveland Browns".

Does that mean the Pats' game plans are going to be crap next year now that Lombardi isn't devising them for Belichick each week?

Send Mallett packing!:D

Seems like a good guy. Good for him.

Yeah, this is the guy who wanted Hoyer and called the Weeden pick at the time a "panicked disaster." They're definitely in the QB market.

Yeah, didn't he say Cleveland was dumb for not giving up a 2nd round pick for Hoyer?

I have a feeling ol' Bill is going to hustle the Browns this upcoming draft.

I don't know if he said that, but he definitely said that if he were in charge of the 49ers, he would have made a move for Hoyer as an RFA as opposed to trading for Kolb. We know he was at least half right, because Kolb stinks.

And then there's this:

Perhaps more interestingly — and slightly more believably — Lombardi also mentioned that he’s sold on Mallett being a top-20 overall pick after speaking to folks around the league.

“I’m convinced he’ll go in the first round,” said Lombardi, predicting Mallett will land “Somewhere between 1 and 20.”

Wow, wonder how cleveland fans will react to this. Can't see them giving up on weeden after throwing a #1 pick away. That was a crazy pick. Should have been a #3 at most for weeden. #1 + Weeden for Mallett... haha.

Lombardi is a smart man and a very solid football mind

I would not be surprised to see the Browns vault to the top of the AFCN within 5 years from now with better direction in the F.O.

Besides, everyone but their fans are tired of seeing the Steelers and Ravens as their only division threats year in and year out.

The same can be said for the AFCE who has 3 teams with a circus act in their respective F.O.s

Unfortunately for Weeden, the guys who drafted him already got fired, and the new guys aren't going to give a darn where he got picked unless he can play. But yes, the fans will be angry, and probably rightfully so. It was a panic move by a GM that probably knew that he'd keep his job if Weeden succeeded and wouldn't be around to deal with the consequences if Weeden failed.

On a related note, I think that general idea is why Vollmer gets overpaid this offseason. A GM who is fighting for his job knows that if he messes up, he won't have to deal with the consequences. A guy like Belichick doesn't have that luxury.

Flacco's success this offseason has to help Mallett's trade value, they're awfully similar QB.

As I said a month or so ago, I want either the Browns' #1 in 2014 or their #3 in 2013 and their #2 in 2014. If not, I would keep Mallett. In this year or unsure QB in the draft he has to have value after two years of causing not a bit of trouble (which was his main negative coming out).

Pioli used to say that a GM's job, even if his title was only VP of PP, was to find talent that fit his HC's schemes. If so Lombardi's penchant for all things BB may work against him. He's now either searching for talent that will fit whatever Chudzinski and Norv and ? (maybe Horton) want or he won't be back in business long or Cleveland will be in the market for a new coaching staff again in 2 seasons. Weeden dosn't fit Norv's offense. Neither does Hoyer. Mallett might because of the arm. Would have to learn a whole other philosophy and terminology, though. Air Coryell version of the West Coast.

I get the feeling Cleveland has hired too may chiefs and not enough indians. Lots of established coaches probably pretty set in their ways. OC has already been a HC. DC if they hire Horton is intent on becoming one. Lombardi isn't a GM, Banner will have a lot to say and probably final say. Could end up with a lot of guys working myopically at cross purposes. And that seldom works out to anyone's advantage and often ends up in a round of finger pointing and FO or staff retooling.

Conversely, should they all blend in and mix well, they've got a ton of good football minds running the organization which would bode very well for them turning things around.

as much pro pats he is, I really didnt care for his analysis. Interesting dynamic now that this son works for the pats.

Meanwhile the jest may settle for the other Lombardi

Jets interview Lombardi for OC job - Jets Blog - ESPN New York

Still searching for an offensive coordinator, the Jets interviewed Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi Wednesday for the position, according to a league source.

The Jets have interviewed at least four people for the vacancy -- Lombardi, Stanford coordinator Pep Hamilton, former Ravens coordinator Cam Cameron and former Eagles coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Tony Sparano was fired after the season.

Former Browns coach Pat Shurmur is interviewing Friday, according to the New York Daily News.

Hopefully he brings back some of that Browns swagger, before I was a Patriots fan was a Browns fan in the days of Jim Brown et al. May be good for the long suffering Browns fans..

Then I saw the light..
