Jason Cole:NFL constant: Patriots have racked up wins before and since Spygate

Well no **** Jason.

This is an example of the downside to getting this far in the playoffs. It happens each time - namely, Spygate talk refreshed. If the Pats win Sunday, which I expect, the next 2 weeks will feature increasing references (comments and articles) to that BS.

Yup, during the Super Bowl bye week, assuming we win, I expect to post:

"If that was cheating this is superdy-duperdy cheating."

win Feb 3 and we'll have

3 super bowl trips before spygate, 3 tight games, all won
70-26 regular season record

3 super bowl trips after spygate, 3 tight games, 1 won
76-20 regular season record

And we never ever hear "no championships since spygate"

There's always a chance that someone in the media will look back, with the benefit of knowing the Saints bounty situation, and state that Goodell's track record shows he will over-punish when he wants to send a message, regardless of the evidence. If the penalty was a $100K fine and a 4th round pick, the story never gets the attention that it did.

A guy can dream, I guess.

Then again, if they didn't make the playoffs, the story line would be about how they needed to cheat to get there and without cheating, they missed it.

Haters gonna Hate.

NY Giants gonna miss the playoffs.

It is what it is.

That is the one size fits all dismissal of rival fan bases. It's funny how the Pats don't need spygate to win AFC Championships but seemingly need it to win a SB...it defies logic. It's as if getting to the Superbowl is a meaningless feat that says nothing about the team.

Let's face it even if the Pats do win the Lombardi this season the same spyage mouth breathers will adopt a new self serving excuse about how the Pats aren't that good. "Sure they won a 4th Lombardi...it's because they're still cheating"!

Dopes.

Wish the fans on this site correctly call it 'CAMERAgate" and not blindly copy the term the mediots use to smear us.

If we as fans - who are supposed to know better - don't use the right word, how the heck can we expect the outsiders to do so?

And, these are not interchangeable terms that hypersensitive guys like me get worked up; words frame issues in the approximate context and whether we like it or not, unconsciously help the mind immediately judge/classify.

Using the word 'spy' triggers an immediate response in the mind that it is clandestine or something done in a sly manner that none is aware about it.

Could not agree more with you. There is this prevailing thought among many that all the Pats need to do to stop the Spygate talk is win another SB. That's wishful thinking. As you contend, I believe that once that happens (and it will), the standard line will be that they're still cheating and, in fact, never stopped.

I have thought about the use of the Spygate term as well, but, honestly, if we think that's going to make a bit of difference, we're kidding ourselves. Just my opinion.

Eh, I think the whole story is BS but I call it SpyGate because that's what it's called.

You could call it BannaGate and it would still be used by opportunists and other soap box morons to denigrate the Pats.

The name is just what we use as short hand to identify it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well, considering that calling any scandal a word that ends with "gate" is dumb in its own right I think we all have to accept that spygate is what the world knows it by and no amount of scheming to call it something different by pats fans will change that.

I guess I wasn't clear or convincing when I wrote

Suggestion: try using the different words to frame subjects and see how your thought patterns/attitude change.

btw, these are not my theories or hopes. Excellent books out there that show how the mind is influenced by subtle words and how we think/react depending on the words which frame the subject in question.

And this has been going on since 2007, so nothing new. I keep pointing it out whenever I see it, hoping at least one or two change their minds. Clearly I didn't convince the two of you. :)

Well it doesn't have any validity anyway since 28 other teams have failed to win a Superbowl since Spygate as well, and the Pats have been to two Superbowls since Spygate.

I get your point, but critics are grasping for straws as it is. Winning the Superbowl would douse those straws with gasoline and burn their little rodent fingers.
